Autopatrolled rights

edit

Dear Faendalimas, You have been granted autopatrolled user rights, which may be granted to experienced Wikispecies users who have demonstrated an understanding of Wikispecies policies and guidelines. In addition to what registered users can do, autopatrollers can have one's own edits automatically marked as patrolled (autopatrol). The autopatrol user right is intended to reduce the workload of new page patrollers and causes pages created by autopatrolled users to be automatically marked as patrolled. For more information, read Wikispecies:Autopatrollers.

This user has autopatrolled rights on Wikispecies. (verify)

You may as autpatroller use the autopatroller user box on your user page. Copy and paste the following code on your user page:

{{User Autopatroller}}

If you have a Meta-Wiki user page, you can put the Wikispecies autopatrolled user box for Meta on your Meta-Wiki user page.

Dear, Faendalimas! Would you accept to be an Administrator on Wikispecies? Wikispecies need more Administrators and presently there is only 23 out of 150 active users.
Please see Administrators for information about Admins rights. If you are positive, I can nominate you on the requests for adminship on your behalf.

Hi Faendalimas,
I deleted the __HIDDENCAT__-tag in some of the pages, you edited. It is not necessary to tag the pages, it is sufficient to tag the category, e.g. Category:Snake Maint. --Murma174 (talk) 17:34, 22 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Why didn't you make an author template for Callicebus miltoni?. the bulletin is free [1]. You can add all the information. PeterR (talk) 10:57, 23 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

TTWG template

Hi. The doi given in the {{TTWG}} template (i.e. DOI: 10.3854/crm.5.000.checklist.v7.2014) seems incorrect. Can you please verify this? Cheers, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 20:27, 26 March 2015 (UTC).Reply

@Tommy Kronkvist: Thanks for letting me know. That is exactly as it is reported in the publication found here I have submitted an error report to DOI.com and will see if they respond in the meantime I will update the TTWG template to remove the DOI and have a download link instead. Online status

edit

I hope it works for you now, if it does, you should have a number of links at the top of your page, where you can indicate your status. If its not working, you must copy this script and put in your User:Faendalimas/StatusChanger2.js and change your User:Faendalimas/vector.js to importScript('User:Faendalimas/StatusChanger2.js');

At the top of this page I placed to templates to choose from and experiment with. Personally I use both, and on user page as well as talk page. I havtnt tried yet, but hav been thinking on putting the smaller one in my signature, so my sign indicated if Im online or not, but im not sure thats working. Authored Taxa

edit

Hi,

I see that you make double work by Authored Taxa by Scott Thomson for the taxa. I see that the real name is Scott A. Thomson and not Scott Thomson. We make authored taxa after real names. PeterR (talk) 12:52, 25 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

@PeterR: I never use my full name, prefer Scott Thomson, not Scott A Thomson, some papers have my middle initial, but its when I was not given a choice. The Taxon authority page is under Scott Thomson. ie Scott Thomson = user:Faendalimas Cheers, Faendalimas talk 12:57, 25 April 2015 (UTC).Reply
I mean that you make double authored taxa. 6 pieces under authored taxa and if you push on 6 authored taxa you see the same taxa. The 6 pieces under authored taxa is over done. I'm sorry for my english. PeterR (talk) 13:11, 25 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Application for Checkuser

edit

Referring to earlier discussions regarding a local Checkuser policy, I herebye apply to get Checkuser user rights, although we havnt reached a consensus reg Checkuser policy, but I want to give it a try if I can get the required votes. For a request to succeed a minimum of 25 support votes and an 80% positive vote are required (subject to the normal bureaucrat discretion). Requests for checkuser run for two weeks, and I ask kindly that somone starts the poll, like we do for adminship applications.

Please also note that CheckUser actions are logged, but for privacy reasons the logs are only visible to other Checkusers. Because of this, Wikispecies must always have no fewer than two checkusers, for mutual accountability. I dont want to suggest anyone, but hope that someone feel inspired and will step forward and also apply for checkuser.

My request to the Wikispecies community is here

Additional Checkuser Application

edit

I also have added my name to those willing to be a checkuser. Please see my application here Wikispecies:Checkusers/Requests/Faendalimas. I listed this yeasterday but have been encouraged to do a mass mail. I would also take the opportunity to make sure everyone knows that any editor can vote but that it is imperative that as many do as possible, for all 4 of the current applicants, please have your say. Checkuser voting has strict policy rules regarding number of votes. You will have other messages from the other Users concerned you can also read about it in the discussion on the Village Pump - Wikispecies:Village_Pump#Application_for_Checkuser. RFC on Checkusers

edit

With one week to go I wanted to remind everyone of the importance of voting on the current CheckUser applications. They can all be found together on a single RFC: Wikispecies:Requests_for_Comment#Checkusers.

It is extremely important with votes such as this for everyone to be involved. There are strict rules in the Wikimedia Foundation Policy guidelines on these votes. I would urge people to have a good understanding of what a CheckUser does. This can be read up on here on the page discussing CheckUser's Wikispecies:Checkusers. Links on this page will take you to other policy information on Meta, HowTo for our site etc.

I would also urge people to look at our own policy development and some past discussion on this can be found here: Wikispecies_talk:Local_policies#Local_CU_Policy.

Wikispecies has in the past had issues that has required the intervention that is supported by the ability to do a CheckUser. Many of us are aware of this. The capacity to do this ourselves greatly speeds up this process. Although SockPuppetry can sometimes be identified without using a CheckUser in order to do the necessary steps to stop it or even prevent it requires evidence. We all know that sockpupets can do significant damage.

This is an important step for Wikispecies. It is a clear demonstration we can run ourselves as a Wiki Project part of Wiki Media Foundation. When I and several others first discussed this we knew it would be difficult at the time to meet all the criteria. We have only now decided to try and get this feature included in Wikispecies. By doing this it can lead to other areas where Wikispecies can further develop its own policies. In some areas we have unique needs, different to the other Wiki's. It is timely we were able to develop all these policies.

Endangered species

edit

Hi Scott. I'm about to create a new "Endangered species" page for December, and came to think of Mesoclemmys hogei. However there are no pictures of it in Commons – nor as far as I can see any free to use images available elsewhere – and I really think that the "Endangered species" section on the Wikispecies Main Page should include a picture. Do you now of any other critically endangered species of chelonian, that is represented with an image in Commons? Or perhaps you have a nice picture of your own to upload? Kind regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 14:33, 4 December 2017 (UTC).Reply

User added to Autopatroller user group

edit

Hi Scott. As you've seen most (almost all?) of the edits made by User:Artificial123 are translations of English vernacular names to Belarusian. I noted that you recently added Artificial123 to the autopatroller user group. Some time ago I gave this some thought myself but realized that while many of his/her edits are excellent, quite a few of them only involves adding transliterations of Latin script scientific names to Belarusian Cyrillic script ditto's, rather than adding the actual Belarusian vernacular names. Hence I wanted to wait with the user group promotion until being able to verify the edits by some other Belarusian speaking user. My Belarusian is not perfect (to say the least…) but I question whether you have taken these instances into consideration? After all we want true vernacular names (if any) rather than "Google Translate" ones. Or to put it in a more Wikispecies' technical wording: In effect adding a user to the autopatroller's group is the equivalent of always running and auto-approving a Real-Time Recent Changes (RTRC) check on that user's edits – but in this particular case, and in your opinion, are we really ready to do that?

Please note that this message is (as always) written in good faith, and that I'm also confident that Artificial123's edits are made in the same manner. That said, I still think my question is valid. Cheers, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 20:19, 19 January 2018 (UTC).Reply

hi @Tommy Kronkvist: I am afraid I assumed he was making valid vernacular name edits. I also believe they are in good faith. I had seen no complaints and saw many unpatrolled edits so saw no harm in giving him autopatrol rights. However, I agree with your point. I am on my phone right now could you please undo my edit to his user rights. We shoud question his edits on his talk page and ensure he is aware we are after local vernacular names not translations from google. cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 20:34, 19 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Done in regards to revoking user's right. Thanks for your swift reply. Question not yet put forward to user's talk page, but I'll do it tomorrow unless anyone else beats me to it (now evening here in Sweden, and its been a very long day working). "quite a few of them only involves adding transliterations of Latin script scientific names to Belarusian Cyrillic script ditto's, rather than adding the actual Belarusian vernacular names"... What? Can you show me that? I only got names from books in Belarusian, some of them are similar with Latin, like Template:Lang-laTemplate:Lang-be, Template:Lang-laTemplate:Lang-be etc. --Artificial123 (talk) 11:46, 20 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Artificial123 and Tommy Kronkvist:. I would not know any Belarusian common names for animals, for all I know they do basically transliterate the latin names. Could you send me a reference for one of the books please. Do not worry I think what you have been doing is in good faith. I just want to make sure its exactly what we need. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 15:29, 20 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Here is Encyclopedia of Belarusian nature in References section. I know user, who wrote the most articles about nature in bewiki, she has this book. I only copied names of these articles and added into Wikispecies articles. --Artificial123 (talk) 18:01, 20 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Now all of the edits are checked and patrolled, however I did revert Брахігобіус i.e. Brachygobius(diff.) Lastly, @Artificial123: when adding more vernacular names in the future, please remember that the Vernacular names section should always be the very last section of the page, below the references and all other sections. See this diff. for an example. Thank you, and happy editing! –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 11:02, 21 January 2018 (UTC).Reply

Mecyclothorax: Articles to create

Hi. In the Administrators' Noticeboard seems to have various orphaned talk pages about the genus Mecyclothorax. All have been deleted. I can do this, but the discussions deleted should remain deleted? Thanks! --Stïnger (会話) 21:33, 13 February 2018 (UTC).Reply

@Stïnger: yes those articles need to be created, ie the mainspace pages, the talk pages can stay deleted though. We only create talk pages here as needed, ie for discussions on particular namespace pages. If its not needed it should not be created and we do not normally have data on the talk page. He never said jackshit to me after you moved the conversation to my talk, so I plowed ahead. In my "review" of new templates, I made minimal edits to his, but he still pounced on me again because (I think: He seems entirely incapable of explaining himself clearly, and I'm left to vaguely assume that what he means about the "bulletin" is this edit, which I actually poked him about because of weirdness in publication dates) of my working on older ones.

I'm editing his old templates for the link things (and also missing category:reference templates and </noinclude>), which I know everyone else will agree are simply not optional corrections. But I'm at my wit's ends as to how I'm supposed to explain that to him. And him being hyper-defensive of "his" content while at the same time accusing me of being a new Stephen is not helping (not to mention the irony therein...). I mean, is it my fault if he has been using these external links in his new templates right up until (!!) this June?

@Circeus and Tommy Kronkvist: I remember that now, frustrating, ok so what shall we do about it, suggestions? Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 16:30, 1 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
Honestly, I'm generally unconcerned with these minutiae, an issue (yes I an still salty about that) which would never have existed if a simple set of cite template had been implemented early on. As long as the information is in the right order and has the right amount of formatting in the right places (i.e. small-capped authors and italicized serial titles), further fighting over this stuff is just pointless and distracting for me.
Any consistency issues I think are actually pertinent (e.g. how to deal with books in series/journal issues with ISBNs, how to format serial titles with subseries, whether book pages should be given as 1-nnn or nnn pp. etc.) are completely ignored by the current (hardly documented, I should add) guidelines. Given the huge backlog of templates which became retroactively misformatted when this rigid standard was chosen, I don't think it's even in use for anything close to the majority of the reference templates to begin with anyway. So I'm sorry, but I really couldn't care less about all this hair-splitting when we have more relevant cleanup and documentation work to do (e.g. {{Zfg}}, {{Auth}}, {{Nomen}}...).
I am especially unconcerned on account that not a single one of the "issues" Tommy butted in to talk about are linked to any changes I made that angered Peter in the first place! I'm pretty sure 99% of his indignation is caused specifically by my disagreement about when and how to link to external pdfa and scans, and we can't argue we have anything close to a standard for that either! Circeus (talk) 16:47, 1 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Circeus and Tommy Kronkvist: Believe it or not I do actually support the notion of a set of reference templates. However I am also aware of how much work it would be. Am familiar with the arguments, valid or not, against it. I do not like the Wikipedia ones as they never display references in a way standardized in Zoology, that could be overcome though. Could I ask a favor could we make a list of templates we must not use, and their prefered alternatives at some point please. Personally I am preferring these days to just use the {{A}} template with the "|nolink=y" parameter when I do not want a link rather than {{Aut}}, are you wanting the {{Nomen}} template used? I can start using it if people wish. Peter has his way of doing things, we possibly need to get him to realize that this is a wiki and is community edited, his edits may be overwritten at times. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 16:58, 1 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
Nomen being used? PLEASE NO. Literally all it does now is throw hard-coded linebreaks into the pages (no really, this right here is the entirety of the code for it: <br>{{{1}}}). The original idea (it was apparently supposed to create collapsible sections?) was of dubious usefulness and I think even Stephen had long abandoned it when he was banned, but there are still over 3K uses of it. Even if Mariusm's bot never creates new articles again, it will have plenty of work dealing just with some of these templates.
My list of templates to get rid of right now is {{Auth}}, {{Nomen}}, {{Syn}}, {{Species}} (this was apparently part of a proposed alternate scheme to the current taxonav templates, but never adopted; I've dealt with the rest of the set) and {{Zfg}}, but only some of those can be bot-removed. I expect more to go on it as I wade about Stephen's old stuff. I would personally do away with stuff such as {{NZEnt}} and {{Zootaxa}} too (mostly because it enforces the use of an issue number that doesn't necessarily exist), but people seem to like at least the latter. Circeus (talk) 18:47, 1 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
I agree. I rid every page of {{Auth}}, {{Nomen}}, {{{Syn}}, {{Species}} and {{NZEnt}} templates when I come across them, but tend to keep the {{Zootaxa}} ones. Tommy Kronkvist (talk)., 19:04, 1 November 2019 (UTC).Reply
@Circeus and Tommy Kronkvist: good that was my understanding, was not clear on what you meant with NOMEN, I will get rid of them as I see them. Certainly do not use them. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 19:20, 1 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
{{NZEnt}} is not nearly as bad now that I removed the forced external links that had gone bad from its code, but I personally believe that the entire class of templates used to to generate the tail end of a reference starting with the journal name are a bad idea (hence my dislike of {{Zootaxa}}, whose design I find especially awkward to update). Unfortunately, Stephen loved creating this sort of templates, and now, there we are... I expect to continue finding new ones (hopefully less widespread) over time. Kinosternoidea redirect to Chelydroidea

edit

With this redirect, what reference are you using? As far as I can tell neither TTWG(2017) or TEWG(2015) have this and they are the references on the destination page. Sun Creator (talk) 14:31, 1 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Following these two:
  • W. G. Joyce. 2016. A Review of the Fossil Record of Turtles of the Clade Pan-Chelydridae. Bulletin of the Peabody Museum of Natural History 57(1):21-56
  • T. R. Lyson, W. G. Joyce, and J. J. W. Sertich. 2017. A new chelydroid turtle, Lutemys warreni, gen. et sp. nov., from the Upper Cretaceous (Campanian) Kaiparowits Formation of southern Utah. Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology 37(6):e1390672

I do not use the Pan-... taxa as they are nomenclaturally not available, this makes the Kinosternoidea a synonym of Chelydroidea. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 14:40, 1 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thank you. What does "they are nomenclaturally not available" mean? How can I tell what is and isn't nomenclaturally available? Sun Creator (talk) 15:06, 1 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Sun Creator: In the case of names such as Pan-Chelidae, Pan-Chelydridae etc that are popular in the PhyloCode papers these are illegal combinations under the code as you cannot have non Latin letters, symbols or numbers in a name, eg "-" hence the name is not available. We follow the ICZN nomenclature for animals, however, PhyloCode does have some better arrangements so we have to adapt them. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 15:26, 1 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

DannyS712 bot

edit

Hi Scott. DannyS712 bot is now approved and will start doing its thing later this week. In the discussion following the bot request you said that you "will commit as a Crat to the removal of the rights after the run is done". I'm with you there and will also keep a close eye on the bot, and certainly two 'crats must be enough to keep any troubles at bay, don't you think? :-) Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 09:12, 14 January 2020 (UTC).Reply

The bot has now completed all of its chores in an orderly fashion, and consequently it's user rights has been removed. Tommy Kronkvist (talk),16:30, 15 January 2020 (UTC).Reply

Vote on use of template taxonbar

edit

Hi, Thank you for casting your vote, and for the comment you left. As you adressed directly to me, I feel free to answer in your discussion page. I must say that the question of the vote is about the use of the template, not its "possible use if". If the vote says "no", the project will be stopped alltogether and every page containing the template will have to be reverted to its former format (I'll do it). Then the template and the associated modules will be deleted. If the "no" is winning (and as you mentionned, it surely will), then don't ask me to redevelopp anything. I think that, at that stage the best is to let the process finish in its due time (meaning in less than a week now). The other users have agreed implicitly for that period of time, so I suggest you don't change the rules all by yourself. Cheers. --Caftaric (talk) 06:04, 11 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Caftaric: I have no intention of changing the rules, I made a suggestion to see if people wanted to end it including you hence I pinged you. I also suggested a way forward as it seems there is support for the development of this. If there is no interest in ending the vote early it will run to the 21st as it should. The way forward with this is largely up to you, from what I can see though the project has potential and most seem to agree with this. I was the nominator, and I thought this was a mainspace page when I nominated it, but as it's actually a talk page, my rationale for deletion is invalid. 𝟙𝟤𝟯𝟺𝐪𝑤𝒆𝓇𝟷𝟮𝟥𝟜𝓺𝔴𝕖𝖗𝟰 (𝗍𝗮𝘭𝙠) 13:40, 14 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Elseya rhodini

edit

I wonder why the author citation is enclosed by parentheses, as the genus Elseya seems to have been the first generic placement of that species, and the presence (or even the change) of a subgeneric name don't affect the use of parentheses (ICZN, art. 51.3.2). Christian Ferrer (talk) 10:34, 10 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Christian Ferrer: yes there should be no parentheses there. The species was originally described as an Elseya. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 11:18, 10 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Ok, I fixed it. Christian Ferrer (talk) 11:26, 10 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Yeah Fagus, we need to appreciate whats happening here, @Andyboorman: this have to do with your discussions on these pages? Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 23:45, 15 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Fagus: @Tommy Kronkvist: Probably prompted by my discussion, I assume. The speedy deletes were once broken redirects, but the link was removed. They are synonyms, but a page for the accepted names has not been created. It does help tidy up the Special Page by removing broken redirects. Andyboorman (talk) 07:22, 16 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

How we will see unregistered users

edit

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

RfC/Vote

edit

Hello, it may have been lost in the closure, but one of the final points over on the RfC was that there is another process which is not about the comments but just about numbers, in other words, a "vote". Sorry to labour the point, but in this instance I feel it is of sufficient import (not least, for the reasons already given). Apparently a "crat" is required for initiation, and as you are such, please could you (cf., Aristides the Just (ostracism section), were personal opposition to global accessibility a momentary consideration). Thank you, Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 06:51, 6 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hello Scott! Have you noticed that your talk page only links to the oldest of your two talk page archives, the one for 2006–2014? There's no link to the newer one regarding 2015–2022. I'm not saying there must be such a link, but thought I should ask since nowadays the page is automatically archived by MABot and therefore it might have slipped your mind. :-) All the best, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 22:39, 25 January 2023 (UTC).Reply

Redirect loops

edit

Hello! I hope that you're okay. I was wondering if the community could check the redirect loops left at Special:DoubleRedirects and fix the targets or tag for deletion those that are no longer needed. As you can see, all of these pages end redirecting to themselves. Nothing urgent as my bot simply skips these, but the community may wish to fix them. Sorry for disturbing. I fixed them all myself with this edit. All of them redirected to Aster ovatus one way or another. Best regards, —MarcoAurelio (☎ talk) 14:28, 7 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Category:NoType

edit

Hi Faendalimas, could you tell me what the purpose of the hidden category Category:NoType is? I see you created it in 2015, and added at least 12 turtle species or genera to it manually around the same time. The category's description states it is for pages using __NoType__, but there seems to be no such text in any of the pages (nor has there ever been as far as I can tell). Since you created the category, maybe you remember why you created it? Monster Iestyn (talk) 23:26, 17 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Monster Iestyn: I use it among other hidden cats to identify pages where I need to look up and add the type data, ie specimen locality etc. Being a hidden Cat no one can see it unless your search for it so they do not detract from pages and I find it a useful tool for flagging pages I need to get back to. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 00:17, 18 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Ah, thank you for explaining. That still means the description for this category is rather misleading though. Monster Iestyn (talk) 00:21, 18 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
