From here you can ask me questions or comments related to my contributions on Wikispecies.

Welcome to Wikispecies!

Hello, and welcome to Wikispecies! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages you might like to see:

If you have named a taxon, then it is likely that there is (or will be) a Wikispecies page about you, and other pages about your published papers. Please see our advice and guidance for taxon authors.

If you have useful images to contribute to Wikispecies, please upload them at Wikimedia Commons. This is also true for video or audio files containing bird songs, whale vocalization, etc.

Please sign your comments on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your username (if you're logged in) and the date. Please also read the Wikispecies policy What Wikispecies is not. If you need help, ask me on my talk page, or in the Village Pump. Again, welcome!

Application for Checkuser edit

Referring to earlier discussions regarding a local Checkuser policy, I herebye apply to get Checkuser user rights, although we havnt reached a consensus reg Checkuser policy, but I want to give it a try if I can get the required votes. For a request to succeed a minimum of 25 support votes and an 80% positive vote are required (subject to the normal bureaucrat discretion). Requests for checkuser run for two weeks, and I ask kindly that somone starts the poll, like we do for adminship applications.

Please also note that CheckUser actions are logged, but for privacy reasons the logs are only visible to other Checkusers. Because of this, Wikispecies must always have no fewer than two checkusers, for mutual accountability. I dont want to suggest anyone, but hope that someone feel inspired and will step forward and also apply for checkuser.

My request to the Wikispecies community is here

Another application for Check User edit

As pointed out above by User:Dan Koehl, we need at least two Check Users for this wiki. I am nominating myself and would be happy to receive any feedback that you have to give (positive, negative, or neutral). Wikispecies:Checkusers/Requests/Koavf. Thanks. Additional Checkuser Application edit

I also have added my name to those willing to be a checkuser. Please see my application here Wikispecies:Checkusers/Requests/Faendalimas. I listed this yeasterday but have been encouraged to do a mass mail. I would also take the opportunity to make sure everyone knows that any editor can vote but that it is imperative that as many do as possible, for all 4 of the current applicants, please have your say. Checkuser voting has strict policy rules regarding number of votes. You will have other messages from the other Users concerned you can also read about it in the discussion on the Village Pump - Wikispecies:Village_Pump#Application_for_Checkuser. Standing for role of checkUser edit

Like some of our colleagues (who I support), I am offering to serve as a checkuser, not least to ensure adequate coverage in case one of the others is unavailable.

Please comment at Wikispecies:Checkusers/Requests/Pigsonthewing.

[Apologies if you receive a duplicate notification; I wasn't aware of Wikispecies:Mail list/active users, and sent my original notification to the list of administrators instead.] MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:59, 1 February 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

RFC on Checkusers edit

With one week to go I wanted to remind everyone of the importance of voting on the current CheckUser applications. They can all be found together on a single RFC: Wikispecies:Requests_for_Comment#Checkusers.

It is extremely important with votes such as this for everyone to be involved. There are strict rules in the Wikimedia Foundation Policy guidelines on these votes. I would urge people to have a good understanding of what a CheckUser does. This can be read up on here on the page discussing CheckUser's Wikispecies:Checkusers. Links on this page will take you to other policy information on Meta, HowTo for our site etc.

I would also urge people to look at our own policy development and some past discussion on this can be found here: Wikispecies_talk:Local_policies#Local_CU_Policy.

Wikispecies has in the past had issues that has required the intervention that is supported by the ability to do a CheckUser. Many of us are aware of this. The capacity to do this ourselves greatly speeds up this process. Although SockPuppetry can sometimes be identified without using a CheckUser in order to do the necessary steps to stop it or even prevent it requires evidence. We all know that sockpupets can do significant damage.

This is an important step for Wikispecies. It is a clear demonstration we can run ourselves as a Wiki Project part of Wiki Media Foundation. When I and several others first discussed this we knew it would be difficult at the time to meet all the criteria. We have only now decided to try and get this feature included in Wikispecies. By doing this it can lead to other areas where Wikispecies can further develop its own policies. In some areas we have unique needs, different to the other Wiki's. It is timely we were able to develop all these policies.

Translation admin logotype edit

I just saw that you have uploaded the logotype on Wikispecies, and not on Commons. I made a logotype out from the meta version, but think your is better, so I kindly ask you to replace the one I did on Commons, with yours. Dan Koehl (talk) 12:33, 9 February 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

error edit

Seems that the template Template:User_Patroller has errors, as can be seen at your user page. Dan Koehl (talk) 22:24, 9 February 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Request for vote reg use of BASEPAGENAME edit

The previous discussions regarding if we should subst:ing BASEPAGENAME and change all [[BASEPAGENAME]] into [[susbt:BASEPAGENAME]] did not really reach a consensus.

Please vote here on the Village pump!

If you are not sure on your opinion, you can read and join the discussion about the claimed advantages and disadvantages of using BASEPAGENAME

Advice on the preparation of translations edit

Hello I want to give some advice for the preparation of translations that can be useful: When you use the <translate> is not necessary to enclose <translate> </translate> text to translate it to a single translation unit, but you can put more translation units (even all) just separate with a blank line units sample translation

<translate> == Text == </translate>
<translate> Text </translate>

is equivalent to

 == Text ==

which gives as the first translation unit == Text == and as a second Abcd in this way is faster for the preparation of the translation pages. Another advice when there Translation Text enclosed in <nowiki> the <translate> must stand before <nowiki> so <translate> <nowiki> text </ nowiki> </ translate> or your tag <translate> it does not work. Looks like here about how I've fixed the <translate> tags.

Another thing I had the idea of proposing to add in Mediawiki:Edittools the <translate> </translate></code> and <languages/> Meta type as they are on so we do first to prepare the pages for translation. What do you think about it? --Samuele2002 (talk) 22:00, 11 February 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Well then proceed to propose the addition of the tag on the talk page of

MediaWiki:Edittools. Regards --Samuele2002 (talk)

CheckUser Page edit

Hi, I have modified the page Wikispecies:Checkusers which I noticed you had marked for translation. You may need to look at it again. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 12:52, 14 February 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Template:Test edit

Hi, on the Template:Test, when using it on a user page, the text ends with </translate>. Do you think that the start <translate> should be moved to a place after the noinclude? Dan Koehl (talk) 14:24, 26 February 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Wikispecies Oversighter edit

Wikispecies has no local Oversighter. Since I had the communitys confidence regarding the previous application for Checkusers rights, as per local Oversight policy on META, I hereby apply to get Oversighters user rights, as a request to the Wikispecies community.

Application is located at Requests for Comment.

Please also note that Oversighter actions are logged, but for privacy reasons the logs are only visible to other Oversighters. Because of this, Wikispecies must always have no fewer than two oversighters, for mutual accountability. I don't want to suggest anyone, but hope that someone feel inspired and will step forward and also apply for oversighters rights.

Oversight nomination edit

Please refer to Wikispecies:Oversighters/Requests/Koavf for a second Oversight nomination. Note that we must have at least two Oversigthers in order for anyone to have these user rights. All feedback is welcome. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 19:50, 3 March 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Administrator? edit

Dear AlvaroMolina! Would you accept to be an Administrator on Wikispecies? I think you are a good candidate, with a good understanding of how the community works. If you are positive, I can nominate you on the requests for adminship on your behalf. –Best regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 21:07, 31 May 2017 (UTC).Reply[reply]

Just wanted to let you know I also hope you would be interessted in this. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 21:30, 31 May 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Tommy Kronkvist and Faendalimas: Hi, sorry the delay in reply, thanks for this proposition, despite my experience is more focused on the maintenance (delete and protect pages, block users and revert edits) than in the creation of content (taxón) pages, if you consider could make a good job here, then I accept happy to assist in this area. Regards. —Alvaro Molina ( - ) 16:23, 2 June 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@AlvaroMolina: That sounds great! I've nominated you on the Wikispecies:Administrators#Requests for adminship. You need to accept the nomination on that page in order for a poll regarding the adminship to be valid. Examples of how to accept the nomination can be found in Wikispecies:Administrators/Archive 4. Autopatrollers edit

Hello AlvaroMolina. I'm not sure handing over the "autopatrolled" user rights to User:Lavalizard101 was the right decision to make, since he frequently disregards many of the formatting hints stated in Help:Taxonavigation section, Help:Reference section, and other help pages. For instance his way of creating/editing the "Taxonavigation" sections often renders odd or messy results, since he doesn't use taxon rank templates such as {{G}} and {{Sp}}. For an example of this, please see Fosterovenator.(diff.) Furthermore he often disregards to use author templates such as {{A}} and {{Aut}} in "Name" and/or "Reference" sections, doesn't use {{Doi|DOI}} templates in citations, and doesn't bother to add asterisks in lists of references and synonyms. For an example of this, again see the above Fosterovenator links, and Panguraptor.(diff.)

All of these matters are fairly well described in our help pages, however I don't think he has read them. He has been informed about these things on his user talk page several times, but is yet to answer. All of this being said, most of the actual data he adds to the pages seems correct, and therefore I don't think it is a good idea to revert his auto patrolled rights. We do need to try and communicate this issues with him though. Best regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 15:58, 10 June 2017 (UTC).Reply[reply]

@Tommy Kronkvist: Okay, sorry. Already removed and thanks of notice. Regards. —Alvaro Molina ( - ) 16:01, 10 June 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Translations edit

Once again thanks for accepting adminship here, I have seen you are active on several places, so very good that you feel positive to some extra input here on ws.

I wonder if you may have an idea why many translated pages turn up on for example category:Administrators? If you go to that category, following the link at the bottom of your user page, and reach the page category:administrators, you will see most of ws adminship listed, but also a group of transactions, which existence on that category is highly irrelevant. I think this is pretty common, and will turn up on a number of pages, where they shouldn't. Any ideas as for the reason for this, there must be some code in the translated paged which make them come up on a category page? Dan Koehl (talk) 15:58, 13 June 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Dan Koehl: I added a switch parameter nocat in the userbox of permissions that allows skipping the categorization on non-user pages. If there is any other problem, let me know. Regards. —Alvaro Molina ( - ) 16:58, 14 June 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks for that, @AlvaroMolina:. Dan Koehl (talk) 16:04, 17 June 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Propuesta edit

Hola Alvaro.

Saludos. —AlvaroMolina ( - ) 23:33, 17 February 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
La he abierto en el café. Me parecía más adecuado colocarlo en RFC pero yo seguí tu sugerencia. --Stïnger (会話) 17:20, 18 February 2018 (UTC).Reply[reply]

How we will see unregistered users edit

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

De-adminship warning edit

Dear AlvaroMolina. I am writing to inform you that you are in danger of losing your adminship on Wikispecies because of inactivity.

If you want to keep your adminship, you need both to sign at Wikispecies:Administrators/Inactivity Section within 30 days of today's date, and also to make at least five further admin actions in the following six months. Anyone who does not do so will automatically lose administrator rights.

You can read the de-admin policy at Wikispecies:Administrators/Admin Review.

Thank you.
