Monster Iestyn
Hi! My main focus on Wikispecies currently is cleaning up the families Chrysomelidae (in Coleoptera), Dolichopodidae and Acroceridae (both in Diptera), though I may from time to time do general cleanup work.
See en:User:Monster Iestyn for my page on the English Wikipedia.

editNotes
editBad/incomplete reference templates
edit- See transluded templates at Aedes aegypti for instance, a number of the references there just cite the author and year and nothing else, making them completely useless as references.
Cleanup-related
edit- Incertae sedis pages are banned, though there still many that need to be deleted (194 left as of writing, including redirects)
- FNZ, 46 templates use this template
- Many templates created by Stho002 that used to be named "Template:Urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:<ZooBankID>" are still missing "Reference page" links for when the templates are transcluded by other pages. They also use raw ZooBanks links (usually directly after the starting noinclude tag) that should be converted to use Template:ZooBank. It's easiest to just recreate the ending parts of the templates with {{subst:Reftemp}} in the editing tools, and add the formatted ZooBank ID link as a parameter including a line break and a bullet point.
- See Special:Search/template:insource:"http://zoobank.org/" for a full list of templates with raw ZooBank links, including the above. There are at least 134 left of the "Urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub" type as far as I can tell.
- "selected references" section headers should be removed, per Wikispecies:Village Pump/Archive 56#Selected references: see "selected references"
- Special:Search/-insource:"Category" hastemplate:"Taxa authored": for taxon author pages missing categories, usually pages for lepidopterists or arachnologists created by PeterR. As of writing this now gives 0 results (in 4 January 2024 I cleaned up all listed pages), but this will go up again in future.
- Special:Search/Template: deepcat:"Reference templates" -insource:"Reference page": Reference templates missing the "Reference page" link (includes cases where "Reference page" is misspelled, and templates that don't need the link such as
{{WFO}}
). 992 instances of this as of writing!!! - Special:Search/deepcat:"Taxon authorities" -insource:DEFAULTSORT or Special:Search/-insource:DEFAULTSORT hastemplate:"Taxa authored": Taxon author pages without sortkeys
- Special:Search/deepcat:"Taxon authorities" -hastemplate:"Taxa authored": Taxon author pages that don't use the
{{Taxa authored}}
template - [1] (insource:/"=== {{int:Vernacular names}} ==="/ hastemplate:Eukaryota): Taxon pages where the "Vernacular names" section has a level 3 header, usually as a subsection of the "Name" section (many of these instances may be leftovers from Caftaric's C. elegans-related contributions...)
- Special:Search/Category: incategory:"Taxa by author" -hastemplate:"Taxa by author": Taxa by author categories that don't use the
{{Taxa by author}}
template

Eumolpinae (and related)
editTribe classification:
- According to Bouchard et al. (2011):
- Bromiini, Eumolpini, Euryopini, Typophorini
- [Minor tribes]: Caryonodini, Cubispini, Habrophorini, Hemydacnini, Megascelidini, Merodini, Pygomolpini, Rosiroiini
- incertae sedis (including Eupalini)
- According to Seeno & Wilcox (1982) (or at least this page, which is probably based on it):
- Adoxini (with informal "sections" or "subtribes": Bromiites, Leprotites, Myochroites, Nerissites, Pseudocolaspites, Scelodontites, Tomyrites (= Ebooina), Trichochryseites)
- Colasposomini (with informal "sections" or "subtribes": Colasposomites, Euryopites, Prasoideites)
- Eumolpini (with informal "sections" or "subtribes": Corynodites, Edusites, Endocephalites, Eumolpina, Iphimeites)
- Nodinini (with informal "sections" or "subtribes": Callisinites, Metachromites, Nodostomini, Pagriites, Typophorites, Nodinini incertae sedis)
- [Minor tribes]: Caryonodini, Cubispini, Habrophorini, Hemydacnini, Megascelidini (formerly subfamily), Merodini, Pygomolpini, Rosiroiini
- incertae sedis
- According to Bechyné (1953): [2]
- Colaspini, Leprotini, Metachromini, Eumolpini, Cynoini, Edusellini, Myochroini, Merodini, Typophorini, Endocephalini, Pygomolpini
- According to Chapuis (1874) (as tribe "Eumolpides"): [3]
- Iphiméites, Colaspites, Chalcophanites, Spilopyrites, Nodostomites, Callistinites, Tomyrites, Scelodontites, Leprotites, Hétéraspites, Pseudocolaspites, Métachromites, Eumolpites, Euryopites, Bromiites, Edusites, Myochroïtes, Mérodites, Typophorites, Corynodites, Endocéphalites
Recent U.S. publications and websites (e.g., BugGuide, ITIS) seem to place genera of "Myochroites" into Eumolpini (?)This system is directly from{{Riley, Clark & Seeno, 2003}}
, which moved the sections "Myochroites" and "Scelodontites" of Bromiini/Adoxini to Eumolpini and Typophorini respectively. However, this doesn't seem to be universally followed yet as far as I know. (e.g. Bouchard et al. (2011) still lists the corresponding family-group names as synonyms of Bromiini)
Potential taxon author pages
edit- Hans-Joachim Heinz (1917–2000), German anthropologist, parasitologist, entomologist
- Wikidata item: Q94654182
- According to Authors of fly names, he authored a name for Diptera,
but I haven't found any proof of this yet online- Okay, I found one species name from Polleniidae (formerly included in Calliphoridae) sometimes attributed to Heinz: apparently, the original work publishing the species Pollenia venturii Zumpt, 1956 attributes it to "Heinz i. litt.", indicating that Heinz himself coined the name. However, according to Rognes, 1992 (page 242), Zumpt should be considered the author of the name as Zumpt provided the taxonomic characters for the species, not Heinz. This is followed by recent publications such as
{{Gisondi et al., 2020}}
. So, Heinz coined a name but is not a taxon author by a Code technicality?
- Okay, I found one species name from Polleniidae (formerly included in Calliphoridae) sometimes attributed to Heinz: apparently, the original work publishing the species Pollenia venturii Zumpt, 1956 attributes it to "Heinz i. litt.", indicating that Heinz himself coined the name. However, according to Rognes, 1992 (page 242), Zumpt should be considered the author of the name as Zumpt provided the taxonomic characters for the species, not Heinz. This is followed by recent publications such as
- Interested in the family Calliphoridae, according to the Deceased diperists page.
- Marcel Léger (full name Louis Marie Marcel Léger, 1878–1934) and Maurice Nogue (1883–1926), the actual authors of the fungus species Scopulariopsis leproides. (See Talk:João Carlos Nogueira Penido for context and information found on them)
Species names
edit- Nouns to watch out for (they can be confused for adjectives with a -us ending; however, they do not change with the gender of a genus in either ICN or ICZN codes):
- orbiculus ('a little disk'; diminutive of orbis)
- globulus ('a little ball'; diminutive of globus)
- bacchulus ('little Bacchus')
Asteriatites/Asteriacites
editThere seems to be some confusion with these names...
- Asteriatites Schlotheim, 1813: 68 (IRMNG) (A. pennatus, A. filiformis, A. rosaceus)
- Asteriatites Schlotheim, 1813: 109 (IRMNG) (A. spinosus, A. pentagonatus)
- Asteriacites Schlotheim, 1820: 324 (IRMNG) (A. lumbricalis (ichnofossil), A. ophiurus (ophiuroid) and A. pannulatus (pseudofossil))
- Asteriacites Schlotheim, 1822: 71 (IRMNG) (A. patellaris [= Actinocyclina])
Other
edit- Full name of W.D. Rotch?
- Apart from publishing his 1871 and 1872 articles, all I know about this author is that he (addressed as "Mr. Rotch" in some articles by others) had the title "Esq.", that he had an aquarium of his own, and that he knew people such as Rev. Thomas Hincks and possibly others such as "Colonel Stuart Wortley" who also had an aquarium. He also must have visited the island Herm in the Channel Islands (where Cladocoryne floccosa was collected), but that doesn't mean he lived there of course. You'd think with a title like "Esq." he might have a biography or obituary that I can find, but I haven't found either yet.
- Full name of R.H. Lewis?
- Not much is known about this author that I can find, except that this author had the title "Esq.", he is an original member of the Entomological Society of London (he is listed as such in the early volumes of the Transactions up to 1843, and he also had the suffix "M.E.S." which turns out to mean he was a member of the society), he mentions a deceased brother named E. W. Lewis in one article (probably Evan Webster Lewis?), and his address is given as Queen-street, Chelsea then later Hobart Town, Tasmania (also named "Van Diemen's Land").
- Hong-Thai Pham, Hong Thai Pham, Thai-Hong Pham, Thai Hong Pham: Are all four of these the same person? If so, which name is preferred? (Also are there possibly two people sharing the same name for any of these?)
IRMNG notes
edit- the suppressed name Crabro Geoffroy, 1762 is actually a synonym of Cimbex Olivier, 1790, not Crabro Fabricius, 1775
- likewise, the suppressed names Clavellarius Olivier, 1789 and Clavellaria Lamarck, 1801 are also synonyms of Cimbex Olivier, 1790.
- non-suppressed synonyms of Cimbex include Palaeocimbex Semenov-Tian-Shanskiĭ, 1935, Deuterocimbex Semenov-Tian-Shanskiĭ, 1935, Neocimbex Malaise, 1937 and Allocimbex Zirngiebl, 1953
