Hello! My name is Iestyn Jealous, I am 27 years old, and I live in Cardiff, Wales, UK. My main focus on Wikispecies currently is cleaning up the families Chrysomelidae (in Coleoptera), Dolichopodidae and Acroceridae (both in Diptera), though I may from time to time do general cleanup work. Disclaimer: I am not a scientist of any sort (let alone an entomologist or taxonomist), but I have been working on pages related to zoology on Wikipedia and Wikispecies long enough to have grasped some knowledge of zoological nomenclature and its rules at least. My other interests/hobbies include drawing and music, and I have some knowledge of computer programming as well. I also studied Theoretical Physics at university some years back; however I left the course after the first two years, so I do not have a degree (but I do have a Diploma of Higher Education). Since then I haven't done a lot academically, though it's not impossible I may think about going back to university.

See en:User:Monster Iestyn for my page on the English Wikipedia.

Bad/incomplete reference templatesEdit

  • See transluded templates at Aedes aegypti for instance, a number of the references there just cite the author and year and nothing else, making them completely useless as references.

Eumolpinae (and related)Edit

Tribe classification:

  • According to Bouchard et al. (2011):
    • Bromiini, Eumolpini, Euryopini, Typophorini
    • [Minor tribes]: Caryonodini, Cubispini, Habrophorini, Hemydacnini, Megascelidini, Merodini, Pygomolpini, Rosiroiini
    • incertae sedis (including Eupalini)
  • According to Seeno & Wilcox (1982) (or at least this page, which is probably based on it):
    • Adoxini (with informal "sections" or "subtribes": Bromiites, Leprotites, Myochroites, Nerissites, Pseudocolaspites, Scelodontites, Tomyrites (= Ebooina), Trichochryseites)
    • Colasposomini (with informal "sections" or "subtribes": Colasposomites, Euryopites, Prasoideites)
    • Eumolpini (with informal "sections" or "subtribes": Corynodites, Edusites, Endocephalites, Eumolpina, Iphimeites)
    • Nodinini (with informal "sections" or "subtribes": Callisinites, Metachromites, Nodostomini, Pagriites, Typophorites, Nodinini incertae sedis)
    • [Minor tribes]: Caryonodini, Cubispini, Habrophorini, Hemydacnini, Megascelidini (formerly subfamily), Merodini, Pygomolpini, Rosiroiini
    • incertae sedis
  • According to Bechyné (1953): [1]
    • Colaspini, Leprotini, Metachromini, Eumolpini, Cynoini, Edusellini, Myochroini, Merodini, Typophorini, Endocephalini, Pygomolpini
  • According to Chapuis (1874) (as tribe "Eumolpides"): [2]
    • Iphiméites, Colaspites, Chalcophanites, Spilopyrites, Nodostomites, Callistinites, Tomyrites, Scelodontites, Leprotites, Hétéraspites, Pseudocolaspites, Métachromites, Eumolpites, Euryopites, Bromiites, Edusites, Myochroïtes, Mérodites, Typophorites, Corynodites, Endocéphalites
  • Recent U.S. publications and websites (e.g., BugGuide, ITIS) seem to place genera of "Myochroites" into Eumolpini (?) This system is directly from {{Riley, Clark & Seeno, 2003}}, which moved the sections "Myochroites" and "Scelodontites" of Bromiini/Adoxini to Eumolpini and Typophorini respectively. However, this doesn't seem to be universally followed yet as far as I know. (e.g. Bouchard et al. (2011) still lists the corresponding family-group names as synonyms of Bromiini)

Potential taxon author pagesEdit

  • Hans-Joachim Heinz (1917–2000), German anthropologist, parasitologist, entomologist
    • Wikidata item: Q94654182
    • According to Authors of fly names, he authored a name for Diptera, but I haven't found any proof of this yet online
      • Okay, I found one species name from Polleniidae (formerly included in Calliphoridae) sometimes attributed to Heinz: apparently, the original work publishing the species Pollenia venturii Zumpt, 1956 attributes it to "Heinz i. litt.", indicating that Heinz himself coined the name. However, according to Rognes, 1992 (page 242), Zumpt should be considered the author of the name as Zumpt provided the taxonomic characters for the species, not Heinz. This is followed by recent publications such as {{Gisondi et al., 2020}}. So, Heinz coined a name but is not a taxon author by a Code technicality?
    • Interested in the family Calliphoridae, according to the Deceased diperists page.
  • Charles Donckier de Donceel (1802–1888) and Henri Donckier de Donceel (1854–1926)
    • These two seem to have been confused with each other across the Wikimedia sites, but are in fact two different people and possibly both deserve their own pages on Wikispecies. (Note: Henri now has a page)
    • As far as I can tell, Charles was associated with the Société Entomologique de Belgique, while Henri was associated with Société Entomologique de France
    • Obituary for Charles (in French): https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/12738941 (from Annales de la Société Entomologique de Belgique 32 Bulletin)
    • Persee.fr page for Henri: https://www.persee.fr/authority/728798
    • Biography for Henri (in French, with image included): https://www.researchgate.net/publication/336414209
      • According to the above, apparently Henri is the son of Charles!
    • Commons:File:Charles Donckier de Donceel.jpg at Commons seems to be unclear as to identity. It was originally named for Henri, but was renamed for Charles under Criterion 3 (obvious error). However, now I know a bit more about them, I think it might actually have been for Henri after all:
      • The image is taken from an album to do with the Société entomologique de France; Henri was part of this society but Charles wasn't (as far as I know so far)
      • The whole collection is stated (at least online) to have been published in 1905, by which time Charles was already long dead nearly 20 years before
      • It actually looks very close to the image of Henri in the biography I linked. Either that or Henri somehow looked a lot like his father!
      • The image's filename has now been fixed

Species namesEdit

  • Nouns to watch out for (they can be confused for adjectives with a -us ending; however, they do not change with the gender of a genus in either ICN or ICZN codes):
    • orbiculus ('a little disk'; diminutive of orbis)
    • globulus ('a little ball'; diminutive of globus)
    • bacchulus ('little Bacchus')

OtherEdit

  • Who is the author named "J.D.W. Koch" of Entomologische Hefte in 1803? [signed by J.J. Hoffmann, J.D.W. Koch, P.W.J. Müller, J.M. Linz in the preface]
    • J.J. Hoffmann = Johann Jacob Julius Hoffmann; J.D.W. Koch = ?; P.W.J. Müller = Philipp Wilbrand Jacob Müller; J.M. Linz = ? (possibly Johann Michael Linz?)
    • The German Wikipedia page for Wilhelm Daniel Joseph Koch seems to imply that he is "J.D.W. Koch" through a mention of Entomologische Hefte, but with no inline citation to help me double check this. (Plus the initials are completely backwards so I'm not entirely convinced, unless it was an error?)
      • From Village Pump: "J.D.W Koch" is Wilhelm Daniel Joseph Koch, as his obituary [3] lists the publication on page 10. This obituary is cited on German Wikipedia.
    • Note on authorship of Haltica (= Altica) monograph: Koch is apparently responsible for descriptions of new species ("at least certainly those of the Halticidae") according to Insects of Samoa pt. IV: fasc. 3.: page 207 (1929) [which itself cites Magazin für insektenkunde vol. 6: page 50 (1807)]
    • Reason I want to be sure who "J.D.W. Koch" is is because several species taxa in Alticini/Alticinae have the authority "Koch, 1803", such as the type species of Dibolia
  • New mystery to solve at some point: is Carl M. Geyer (1796–1841) the same as Peter Carl Friedrich Geyer (1802–1889)? If so, which dates are actually correct? (and if so what does "M." stand for?)
