Talk:João Carlos Nogueira Penido

A possible identity and a mixup

This author I suspect may be the same person as the mycologist "Penido J.C. Nogueira" on IPNI (Wikidata item, IPNI). But the different name order struck me as odd, so I decided to double check on Index Fungorum, particularly the cited example species authored, Scopulariopsis leproides.

According to Index Fungorum and Species Fungorum, the full citation for this species is "Scopulariopsis leproides L. Léger & Nogueira, Bull. Soc. Path. Exot. 15: 656 (1922)". But according to the actual original paper it was described in (linked here), the two authors are actually "Marcel Léger" and "Maurice Nogue". Apart from wondering whether "J.-C.-N. Penido", "Penido J.C. Nogueira" and Maurice Nogue are actually all the same person, I cannot find a "Marcel Léger" on either IPNI or Index Fungoroum either. There are other people with the surname "Léger" on both websites but none with "Marcel" as a first name or one of the given names.

As for Marcel Léger and Maurice Nogue themselves, it turns out there is information available for both of them online:

Unfortunately the impression I get from this is that the mycology websites are wrong about the authors of Scopulariopsis leproides, IPNI is wrong in turn by copying them, and that both J.-C.-N. Penido and "Penido J.C. Nogueira" are probably not the same person as Maurice Nogue. This still doesn't clear up whether J.-C.-N. Penido and "Penido J.C. Ah, here we go, the full name of this author is João Carlos Nogueira Penido (1902–1959), according to [4]. This obituary also mentions Aristides Marques da Cunha, who was sometimes a co-author in his articles, so this seems to be the correct person to me. Monster Iestyn (talk) 22:47, 18 March 2023 (UTC)
