Welcome to Wikispecies!

Hello, and welcome to Wikispecies! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages you might like to see:

If you have named a taxon, then it is likely that there is (or will be) a Wikispecies page about you, and other pages about your published papers. Please see our advice and guidance for taxon authors.

If you have useful images to contribute to Wikispecies, please upload them at Wikimedia Commons. This is also true for video or audio files containing bird songs, whale vocalization, etc.

Please sign your comments on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your username (if you're logged in) and the date. Please also read the Wikispecies policy What Wikispecies is not. If you need help, ask me on my talk page, or in the Village Pump. Again, welcome! CoF template URL update

I have updated Template:CoF to fix the URLs, all template links are now working properly again. Thanks for working on this although it took me a while to notice due to inactivity. Hopefully this will be useful to all. Thanks for your work. Koumz (talk) 18:21, 26 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

@Koumz: Thank you for doing all the real work. Here's to cataloging fish in 2015. —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:35, 26 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
The problem is actually a little bigger than that even, as it affects all CAS links and not just the fishes ones, but I will come at least briefly out of my semi-retirement to fire up AWB and fix them. Koumz (talk) 19:40, 26 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Autopatrolled rights

Dear Koavf, You have been granted autopatrolled user rights, which may be granted to experienced Wikispecies users who have demonstrated an understanding of Wikispecies policies and guidelines. In addition to what registered users can do, autopatrollers can have one's own edits automatically marked as patrolled (autopatrol). The autopatrol user right is intended to reduce the workload of new page patrollers and causes pages created by autopatrolled users to be automatically marked as patrolled. For more information, read Wikispecies:Autopatrollers.

This user has autopatrolled rights on Wikispecies. (verify)

You may as autpatroller use the autopatroller user box on your user page. Copy and paste the following code on your user page:

Patrolling rights

Thanks a lof for using your patroller user right and doing some patrolling! Please inform me if you experienced any difficaulties, or if you have any questions.

Since you have made use of your patroller user rights, you will keep them, and I will remove your autopatrol user right, since there is no need for both.

This user has patrollers rights on Wikispecies. (verify)

Patrollers may use the Patroller user box on their user page. Copy and paste the following code to your user page:

Lectotype images for Homo sapiens sapiens

  • Someone with greater wiki technical and legal skills than myself either needs to contact Uppsala University for permission to upload to Wikimedia Commons, or upload a copy of the JPG directly to Wikipedia/Wikispecies as a fair use of the copyrighted image. Nicole Sharp (talk) 04:42, 5 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
    Talk:Homo sapiens sapiens#The picture
    commons:Commons:FAQ#Copyright questions
    • @Nicole Sharp: I have actually tried to make a mosaic picture of humans before which shows different skin tones, ages, sexes, etc. because that would be a good representation of how humans look rather than choosing a single human image. Your point is a good one. —Justin (koavf)TCM 04:44, 5 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
      • My personal opinion is that it would be impossible to find a single phenotypic image for which all humans would agree upon to represent themselves as a species. Even the famous Pioneer plaques sent to represent the human species to extraterrestrials had human genitalia censored by NASA. From a biotaxonomic perspective however, it is difficult to disagree with the historical contributions of Carl von Linné to the field, despite being a white (cishetero) European and perhaps not the best representative of human diversity. His spouse however would arguably make a better historical lectotype than him, since females are more common within the species. With female and male being the most common sexes present in the species, accounting for about 99% of the population, it would be good to have images of both Carl and Sara von Linné, and not the just the male of the couple. Nicole Sharp (talk) 05:00, 5 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
        • @Nicole Sharp: Sure but having a variety of faces and body types would be even better, since humans have variation amongst them. I'm not sure how or why Linneaus' sexual orientation is relevant (in fact, how do you even know it...?) since that isn't something that is displayed in a picture, but many common differences in traits can be observed with a mosaic of images made up of many types of humans. —Justin (koavf)TCM 05:24, 5 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
          • (Typo for parenthetical subimportance corrected above.) I was just expressing the number of sociological privileges that von Linné enjoyed to enter such a prestigious position in the biological sciences. I agree that an image attempting to express human biogenetic diversity would be best, but I think it would be impossible to do practically. I think using the established human lectotype of von Linné is an acceptable compromise due to his historical importance to biological taxonomy. I am only arguing that an image of his spouse should also be added as a human paralectotype so that the numerical-majority female sex can be represented. Of course, sex and sexuality of historical figures is notoriously difficult to know. For all we know, one or both of the von Linnés could have been intersex, since human intersexuality was poorly understood at that time, particularly chromosomal science. All we know is that they were sexually compatible enough to successfully reproduce offspring. Nicole Sharp (talk) 00:05, 8 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi Justin. Your points on the pump are well meaning, but please look at his recent edits. He is once gain trying to impose his chosen formats onto WS as well as annoying PeterR sufficiently as to force him to move off our site. The trouble with Thorpe is that he treats WS as his chosen domain and to hell with the rest of us. Many of his edits in the last couple of days are both helpful and show a lack of knowledge. In addition, he is acting in a petty manner by refusing to listen to others and going along on his own sweet way, particularly when it comes to formats and ignoring consensus. As PeterR puts it he is not as good as he thinks he is and IMO he has made few original contributions in the last few years preferring to concentrate on categories and getting involved with the contributions of others! I also think he is perhaps trying to provoke edit wars. Do we need a checkuser ASAP? Andyboorman (talk) 18:45, 28 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Andyboorman: It's pretty obvious--I just did it. It's sad. He has a lot to offer but just refuses to not argue with others. —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:47, 28 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Please could you look at my suggestion here, and the demo edit mentioned there, and see what you think? We need a way to apply the class without the DIV (but in each instance of the template instead); I fear that's not achievable. Italian translations

Hi, I wanted to start translations in Italian at Wikispecies:Localization: can you enable it please? Thank you --Ruthven (talk) 11:16, 15 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Ruthven: Grazie! You can post it here, on Wikispecies talk:Localization or email it to me. —Justin (koavf)TCM 20:30, 15 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
I'm doing some translations but I need a quick information: where are messages like MediaWiki:Paleornithologist/it used? Those should be lower case in Italian unless they are used just after a punctation mark. --Vituzzu (talk) 21:43, 28 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Vituzzu: Strictly speaking, we should have entries for both "Name" and "name" as well as "Zoologist" and "zoologist" but since there is so little actual text on Wikispecies, it's not that critical. I'd be happy to copy and paste any Italian translations you have and start adding them to our interface. —Justin (koavf)TCM 03:18, 29 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
Uhm I see (@Pigsonthewing: too), so if needed you can fix/fork those messages by yourself since the rule is pretty straightforward. Basically in Italian adjectives and nouns of things/activities/almost-anything-but-proper-nouns are lower case. So you'll say "the species was firstly described by zoologist Koavf in october 2016". By the way I'm using my stewards userrights to put translations directly into mediawiki's namespace avoiding bothering you with requests to move translations, I hope this is not a problem to local policies, otherwise I'll put them in talkpages. --Vituzzu (talk) 21:45, 29 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Vituzzu: Go for it! Thanks a lot. —Justin (koavf)TCM 21:47, 29 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hello, I reverted part of your edit in this template. In my opinion, it is better to have the distribution information only in a collapsible box. In cases like Ochna it would take too much space in the article. As there already have been some discussions, if distribution data should be included or not, it certainly is better to present it not too bulky. Regards --Franz Xaver (talk) 11:34, 31 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Franz Xaver: Thanks for your note. It's a pity that we have anything that is collapsible, since it is inaccessible to users and doesn't work with some browsers/rendering agents. —Justin (koavf)TCM 13:40, 31 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hello, and @Orchi: @Franz Xaver:. I think your edits on this template need discussion. In my opinion, no. I remember all the fuzz that were stirred up before, but that should be considered history. Nowadays the bot is registered after having passed all tests and getting approved, so it should be able to run just like any other approved bot. And as usual, if someone disapproves or spots an erroneous edit they are welcome to flag for this on KoehlBot's user page, again just like with any other bot. As a side note and regarding bots in general rather than KoehlBot, I sometimes have a difficult time understanding all the commotion regarding the bots. There are a mere total of 23 approved bots on Wikispecies, most of them inactive. As a comparison the English Wikipedia runs 312 bots, many of them very active and dealing with an immensely much bigger number of pages than Wikispecies. Yet there seems to be peace in enWP bot land these days... –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 03:02, 5 January 2017 (UTC).Reply

@PeterR: As I recall, I deleted several subcategories of Publications by author but maybe forgot some... Not sure. They are all gone now. —Justin (koavf)TCM 18:02, 9 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
The Category:Publications of D. Telnov was deleted by Justin ("Koavf") at 16:56, 9 January 2017. This can be seen in the Deletion log. (As a note the author name should have been Dmitry Telnov, not "D. Telnov", but the category was named in accordance with the naming scheme used by its creator, i.e. Mr. Thorpe.)
As for the decision to remove all categories except the ones for museums and authored taxa, @PeterR: I have asked you before and I will ask you again: where can such a decision be found? I can't find a link to any page where we have made such a decision. I do not doubt you but I can't find all of the links on Wikispecies, so please help me. Please can you explain this edit and your edit summary of "no scheme for this"? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:54, 9 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Pigsonthewing: These were only redlinks and there is no greater categorization scheme of "x by country"--I don't know that we should have any but I think we should have a discussion about "by country" categories. For instance, we have deleted thousands of categories that are geographic for taxa but we have a few for taxon authorities by country. As I posted on your talk about a different template, if you are in favor of restoration, then I am happy to see you restore it (or do it myself if you'd prefer) and then we can discuss issues related to geography at the Pump. —Justin (koavf)TCM 16:42, 9 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

I was just putting a space before the parenthesis. —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:09, 16 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Application for Checkuser

Referring to earlier discussions regarding a local Checkuser policy, I herebye apply to get Checkuser user rights, although we havnt reached a consensus reg Checkuser policy, but I want to give it a try if I can get the required votes. For a request to succeed a minimum of 25 support votes and an 80% positive vote are required (subject to the normal bureaucrat discretion). Requests for checkuser run for two weeks, and I ask kindly that somone starts the poll, like we do for adminship applications.

Please also note that CheckUser actions are logged, but for privacy reasons the logs are only visible to other Checkusers. Because of this, Wikispecies must always have no fewer than two checkusers, for mutual accountability. I dont want to suggest anyone, but hope that someone feel inspired and will step forward and also apply for checkuser.

RFC on Checkusers

With one week to go I wanted to remind everyone of the importance of voting on the current CheckUser applications. They can all be found together on a single RFC: Wikispecies:Requests_for_Comment#Checkusers.

It is extremely important with votes such as this for everyone to be involved. There are strict rules in the Wikimedia Foundation Policy guidelines on these votes. I would urge people to have a good understanding of what a CheckUser does. This can be read up on here on the page discussing CheckUser's Wikispecies:Checkusers. Links on this page will take you to other policy information on Meta, HowTo for our site etc.

I would also urge people to look at our own policy development and some past discussion on this can be found here: Wikispecies_talk:Local_policies#Local_CU_Policy.

Wikispecies has in the past had issues that has required the intervention that is supported by the ability to do a CheckUser. Many of us are aware of this. The capacity to do this ourselves greatly speeds up this process. Although SockPuppetry can sometimes be identified without using a CheckUser in order to do the necessary steps to stop it or even prevent it requires evidence. We all know that sockpupets can do significant damage.

This is an important step for Wikispecies. It is a clear demonstration we can run ourselves as a Wiki Project part of Wiki Media Foundation. When I and several others first discussed this we knew it would be difficult at the time to meet all the criteria. We have only now decided to try and get this feature included in Wikispecies. By doing this it can lead to other areas where Wikispecies can further develop its own policies. In some areas we have unique needs, different to the other Wiki's. It is timely we were able to develop all these policies.

How's your understanding of CSS? I have put {{Archives}} on my talk page, having imported the template code from en.Wikipedia. As you can see, compared to my talk page there, it's misaligned. I'm not sure what CSS needs to be imported. Can you help, please? I've also asked for an archiving bot to start work on Wikispecies. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:48, 7 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Pigsonthewing: Good, not great. As you can see, my first attempt didn't work but I'll keep at this. —Justin (koavf)TCM 16:49, 7 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Pigsonthewing: Second time's a charm. I'm sure there are more elegant solutions but I woke up nine minutes ago and I have work in 70. I can take a look again if you want something prettier or simpler but this will probably have the behavior you want and is valid CSS/HTML. —Justin (koavf)TCM 16:53, 7 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. That's working, but I was actually thinking of importing the styles (in common.css?)from en.Wikipedia. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:15, 7 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Pigsonthewing: Ah, yes--that is what you explicit wrote above. Let me take a look when I'm back from work. —Justin (koavf)TCM 17:25, 7 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

───────────────────────── @Pigsonthewing: I have imported several styles from en.wp to MediaWiki:Common.css. The template that you imported uses several classes and I just copied the associated styling for all of those. It maybe/kinda/should work but since it's CSS and I'm doing it, I'm sure that it won't. At the very least the <div> float works for now... I can definitely keep at it if you want. I actually have some web design that I am doing at the moment, so it's nice to sort through these frustrations. —Justin (koavf)TCM 03:40, 8 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi! You made a small mistake when you copied the hungarian version of words at Wikispecies:Localization.

Please, change Editor to Szerkesztő and Editors to Szerkesztők (because the Járőr means Patroller see: Wikispecies:Patrollers/hu for demonstration), and please change the Type data to Típus adat.

Thank you! BanKris (talk) 10:34, 11 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

@BanKris: Actually, that page is mostly made by hand, but you'll notice that the line "Editor" is all in blue for every language because that term didn't need to be translated here at Wikispecies. It is translated over at translatewiki: and is a part of the MediaWiki software itself. (You can see this for yourself if you use other languages that no one here has translated like, "MediaWiki:Editor/br", which is Breton.) If MediaWiki:Editor/hu is incorrect, then it's incorrect across all MediaWiki sites. Go ahead and check any random wiki like, s:fr:MediaWiki:Editor/hu (which is the French Wikisource). So I'm a little reluctant to change that one since it is so widely used all over MediaWiki. Does that explanation make sense? —Justin (koavf)TCM 11:02, 11 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Koiwaya template

In view of the duplication it seemed sensible to have only one reference to this paper. I have restored it, but we now have two templates for effectively the same reference. Wikispecies has no local Oversighter. Since I had the communitys confidence regarding the previous application for Checkusers rights, as per local Oversight policy on META, I hereby apply to get Oversighters user rights, as a request to the Wikispecies community.

Application is located at Requests for Comment.

Please also note that Oversighter actions are logged, but for privacy reasons the logs are only visible to other Oversighters. I agree. The user account in question is indefinitely blocked from several wikis and for various reasons, together with no less than eight sock-puppets that are also indefinitely blocked. @StevenJ81 and Tommy Kronkvist: Thanks. I did not see him blocked locally or on Meta, so I assumed good faith. I agree that his nomination was ridiculous but I assumed that he could help with localization, since that was his main complaint. —Justin (koavf)TCM 17:32, 8 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
In these matters I always opt for the "Global account information", like this. That instantly gives you all the current user group- and blocking data for all of the wikis at once, instead of just checking a single wiki at a time. That information can then serve as a starting point for checking other logs of a more specific nature, such as for example user rename logs.Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 18:35, 8 August 2018 (UTC).Reply

@Circeus: Agreed. Transclude it onto the archives and that solves the problem. —Justin (koavf)TCM 03:49, 20 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

───────────────────────── @Circeus & Justin: This template also has a cousin named {{Tanheader}} which is used on Wikispecies:Translation Administrators' Noticeboard. The {{Dynamite}} template most likely got its name from its predecessor {{Translatable template}} which was originally created on Wikidata and use {{TNT}} as a redirect shortcut. Hence the "dynamite" connection.

Justin, something seems to have gone amiss when you added the {{Anheader}} template to the Admins' Noticeboard archives for 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. Or perhaps the template was altered after that, making it look bad on the archive pages. In either case, do you know how it can be fixed? Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 08:44, 15 January 2020 (UTC).Reply

adding spaces between initials in taxon authority names

Please stop adding spaces between initials in taxon authority names. While this is a matter of personal style and preference (which I myself used to follow), the great majority of double initials do not have spaces between them. The style of no space between initials is used by numerous long-time editors and administrators and we all need to be following the same style format to avoid constant needless changes. Please check this random sample of such cases: D.P. Wooldridge, N.R. Campbell, Kaio C.C. Alevi, T.A. Al-Turki etc. all set up by administrators or long-term editors. How we will see unregistered users

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Wiki code in translations

Hi Justin. While doing some patrolling of the "Recent changes" earlier today I stumbled over this edit of a Chinese translation. I don't recall seeing anything like it earlier. I think that the two Chinese translations in the most recent edit are okay. If I'm correct they say 示例 → "Example" (as in "give typical example", "demonstrate") and 範例 → "example" (as in "exemplification"). However my question doesn't really involve the translation, but the wiki code. I don't think I've ever seen wiki code used in that way ever before, i.e.: -{zh-hans:示例; zh-hant:範例;}-

Is it correct? Looks murky to me... I'm asking you since I know by experience that you're usually very apt in dealing with these kinds of oddities. All the best, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 08:04, 23 February 2022 (UTC).Reply

@Tommy Kronkvist: These are language conversion blocks made possible by LanguageConverter. This user is allowing for switching between w:en:Simplified Chinese characters and w:en:Traditional Chinese characters. Error in ”Userdata” template

Hello Justin. Could you please have a look at Template:Userdata and try to figure out why blank spaces in user names must be replaced by underscores for the (last) "Global account information" link to work? If blank spaces are used instead of underscores only the first part of the user name is linked (eg. "Tommy" instead of "Tommy Kronkvist"). It's not the end of the world of course, but the "underscore workaround" may be hard for some users to figure out and the rendered result is ugly (in some browsers a few of the underscores are randomly bolded). See the collapsed section in the "Accounts under review" paragraph in this diff for an example. – Tommy Kronkvist (talk) 12:24, 15 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hello 1234qwer1234qwer4. Indeed it does work. Thanks! I guess it would be possible to change the link from Wikispecies Special:CentralAuth to meta:Special:CentralAuth? In my opinion the Meta-Wiki page is more "official" since the data regards the global account information. Just a thought.

You can prepend a "m:" before the wikilink to do so. Indeed the global account (un)lock log is only shown on the CentralAuth page on Meta-Wiki. 𝟙𝟤𝟯𝟺𝐪𝑤𝒆𝓇𝟷𝟮𝟥𝟜𝓺𝔴𝕖𝖗𝟰 (𝗍𝗮𝘭𝙠) 13:22, 15 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

A question to all of Wikispecies checkusers

Hello Koavf. As a checkuser and an admin, do you have an opinion about the speedy deletion-request of this user page: User:Korosh Ardeshir Gabriele Rokni?

(This message has been sent to our other two checkusers as well.) Kind regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 10:23, 8 May 2023 (UTC).Reply

That account is globally locked now and I have deleted the page. Thanks for asking. —Justin (koavf)TCM 10:31, 8 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi, why have you undone my speedy deletion request? This page is not a translation. --Ameisenigel (talk) 06:09, 17 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

I can't delete the category, as it contains legit content. The introductory text should be translated to Slovak, but it shouldn't be deleted: having a redlink category would be worse. —Justin (koavf)TCM 06:14, 17 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
Done. Introductory text now translated. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 06:41, 17 August 2023 (UTC).Reply
Just for the record: If you only delete one specific translation unit, the according page will not be deleted. Even if every single translation unit would be deleted, the according page will still exist with "0 % translated". --Ameisenigel (talk) 13:12, 17 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
True. Thanks Ameisenigel. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 03:23, 18 August 2023 (UTC).Reply

Hi @Koavf! Could you please help by changing the current 'CSS' content model of my user subpage User:Asked42/sandbox/styles.css to 'sanitized-css'? I want to use it for some testing purposes regarding the bn Main page. Thank you. Asked42 (talk) 17:11, 16 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
