Admin rights edit

Hello, You told me in September, that when I reach, the 1000 edits you give me administratot rights. So I did it. All the bests, --BanKris (talk) 09:37, 8 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Dear @BanKris:, I believe you have somewhat misunderstood me. Yes, after noticing your intensive translation activity, I asked you if you would accept to be admin on WS. With this request I simply took for granted that you knew that adminship is something that i not just given by a user, but something that goes through a nimination and voting progress. Later, I noticed that you hadnt been member for one year, and had less than 1 000 edits, and I wrote you and explained that I must wait to nominate you. Meanwhile, WS had another two, new admins, and I did not see a severe need for more, especially since your activity became less intensive.
Now you have sent me email, and asked me why I havent nominated you, as if I had given you a promise to do so. This indicates for me that you are not totally familiar with the policies of Wikispecies, among other things that make me reluctant to nominate you.
But you can apply for adminship yourself. Please read more about admins work, and feel free to nominate yourself.
Dan Koehl (talk) 17:49, 8 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
Oh, sorry for that. I was inattentive. --BanKris (talk) 18:56, 8 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Talk page length edit

Hi Dan,

Your talk page is - before I save this - 131,855 bytes long. That can cause problems reading or editing it for some users. Please archive most of it. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:17, 9 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

For sure, and you are right @Pigsonthewing:, now its done! :) Dan Koehl (talk) 18:55, 27 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

not a typo: is Materialy a "strange word"? edit

Hello Dan Koehl, your bot changed the russian word Materialy to Not a typo|Materialy, (for example in Oreosalsola drobovii and Salsola junatovii)‎. 1.this does not work, as the word Materialy is no longer visible. 2. Also I would doubt, if this word should be included in your list of "strange words". Numerous russian journals are titled Materialy, e.g. "Botaniceskie Materialy ...", so this word will appear in many thousands of pages, especially when more asiatic species are included in wikispecies! Kind regards, --Thiotrix (talk) 09:00, 26 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for pointing that out, @Thiotrix:, a second option is to change in the list of typos. Dan Koehl (talk) 09:06, 26 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Checkuser edit

Hi Dan,

is the Checkuser application a coded piece or did you just type it out. If you wish I can self nominate or you or someone can nominate me. I was involved in the original discussions about having CU's on WS. So am very familiar with the issue. This way we would get at least two and meet the criteria straight away. Cheers, Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 13:53, 28 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

You can nominate yourself at Checkuser application which is available at How do I become a checkuser? where you change Username in the string Wikispecies:Checkusers/Requests/Username to your user name, and press the button "request Checkusership". At Requests_for_Comment you can see and vote on the present (self-)nominated users. Dan Koehl (talk) 14:14, 28 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Third application for checkuser edit

Further to recent messages, I am also offering to serve, so that we have three checkuser operators, to ensure adequate coverage in case one of the others is unavailable. Please comment at Wikispecies:Checkusers/Requests/Pigsonthewing. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 14:47, 28 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Creationists edit

I see you blocked 323van indefinitely. My first instinct as well, and almost did it. But with years of experience in dealing with Creationists, there is very much psychology and politics involved. Blocking right off serves their martyrdom, which is of utmost importance in Creationism. They already hallucinate that scientists are all universally conspiring against them, and being debunked reinforces that. I have seen them leave blogs crying "You all just hate Christians". Interesting that, as one science blog I am on has 4 ordained ministers. Frequently, they do not do this on their own volition, but are sent by their preachers. They are not like regular troll spammers, who just like to be annoying. Best way is to warn and explain, then blast them if they do not listen. Neferkheperre (talk) 16:22, 31 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

I see, interesting, I must admit, my experience from Creationists is maybe limited, and a block for another time period is perfectly OK with me, what would you suggest; a month, or a week, or a year? Dan Koehl (talk) 16:32, 31 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
I think first explaining that Creationism is not considered to be real science, then one month blocking if they don't respond accordingly, would do it. Creationists are not well educated in science, and have short attention spans. They are unlikely to ever become productive editors here. Most live in Midwestern or Southern USA, and have political and psychological clout there. Otherwise, only Northern Ireland and Queensland have substantial numbers. There is another Islamic group, from Turkey, called Harun Yahya, which sporadically spams science websites with incredibly long, repetitive and half-coherent ranting. Typically, they will just spam-and-run, and are not likely to try to re-edit any of our pages. Neferkheperre (talk) 18:01, 31 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
But, is there any chance whatsoever, that this user may one day instead of vandalizing WS, start to contribute in any creative way? Dan Koehl (talk) 21:34, 31 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
Not totally impossible. It is not very common. Neferkheperre (talk) 00:59, 1 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

RE:Translation admin logotype edit

Hi, both images were in Commons (the other could not be alone in Wikispecies, since there is no local upload files), I think it is better to leave it as this, since I admit that yours also fit well. If you want you can use any of the 2, I have no problem. Regards. Alvaro Molina ( - ) 21:30, 9 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

RE:Error edit

Hi, I have already corrected it, I forgot to place the noinclude in the translation tags. Thanks and Regards. Alvaro Molina ( - ) 23:00, 9 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Format of Help Page edit

Hi @Dan Koehl: as you have noticed have made some additions to the Name Section of the Help Pages, but I am not sure about the format side of things. If you could have a look - Thanks. I would also like to add a specific full example for botany, but I am not sure whether or not this is required - Advice? Cheers Andyboorman (talk) 14:21, 10 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Wow @Andyboorman:, that was needed I guess, great initiative! Thanks for telling, I´ll take a look later. Dan Koehl (talk) 16:08, 10 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

CU edit

Hi Dan Koehl. Congrats with the CheckUser rights. In order to complete your request for CU access, I need your email address. I need it to subscribe you to the checkuser mailing list and give you access to the CU wiki. Also: if you use IRC, please give me your irc nick and cloak. I wanted to send you an email, but it seems you disabled email access. Please enable it in your preferences and send me an email via Special:EmailUser/Trijnstel. Thanks. En-dash edit

How does one make this symbol? Revisions do not give clear idea. Neferkheperre (talk) 00:16, 17 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Neferkheperre:, I must admit I dont know, we dont use the character dash in Sweden, and on my swedish keyboard I dont have it, although I guess with help from Google, I can find a solution. depending on which keyboard you have, maybe you dont have it. I guess best thing then is to read about how you can create fast computer commands. Dan Koehl (talk) 00:27, 17 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
No, wait, of course, the wiki commands, when you edit a page or talk page, you have them at the bottom, a selection of characters, if dash is not yet among them, we should see to that we get it there. Dan Koehl (talk) 00:30, 17 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
OK, I spotted it in inserts. thanks. Neferkheperre (talk) 02:07, 17 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Neferkheperre: you can make it also by holding the alt-key and typing 0150 on the keypad. Mariusm (talk) 11:01, 20 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
Great. Really all I have to do is remember it at all for non-Zootaxa references. Neferkheperre (talk) 14:18, 20 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

CSVLoader plugin edit

Hi, are you familiar with the CSVLoader plugin for AutoWikiBrowser? Seems it can do the job of creating new articles from CSV data files. Mariusm (talk) 10:57, 20 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

No, @Mariusm:, but I will look into that, sounds exciting. Dan Koehl (talk) 11:33, 20 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Bot request edit

Hi, can you please use your bot to make the following changes on pages with Spage (8700 pages).

  • Find: Spage
  • Replace with: Species: \n\n==Name==\n

This template was the creation of Stephen and it makes section-editing impossible.

Many thanks Mariusm (talk) 16:23, 23 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

I see @Mariusm:. The bot is still going on with hyphen corrections, (did some 150 000 now) but I can always stop that and help you out with those files, shouldn't take long time, and it sounds like its a bit urgent? Dan Koehl (talk) 17:26, 23 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
Ill make some 10 tests first. (I found the 8 705 pages..?) Dan Koehl (talk) 17:38, 23 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

OK, @Mariusm: please check the outcome of the changes, and if it looks OK, confirm, and then I will run the Bot. Dan Koehl (talk) 17:45, 23 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Running another 10 with the Bot now... Dan Koehl (talk) 18:01, 23 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

First now I noticed that the Species has a white space.... will have to go through many files again. :(

Species: Acineta densa

Looks fine to me; not seeing any problems. Mariusm (talk) 08:39, 24 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

ISBN edit

Hello Dan, can you please take care of ISBNs formatted with hyphens when working with your bot? Best wishes, RLJ (talk) 00:59, 27 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Sorry for this @RLJ:, its just strange that there were no errors with some other + 200 000 files, and it has been working well for almost a week, while this happened with the pages updated by you? How many would you estimate you had to correct after the Bot changed them? @Mariusm and Koavf:Do you have an idea? Dan Koehl (talk) 04:58, 27 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
I will make a try with ((?<!ISBN): [0-9]+)-([0-9]+) Dan Koehl (talk) 05:34, 27 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
It seems it is this one \sISBN(.*)([0-9])–([0-9]+[A-z]+) creating this problem @RLJ:. Ill see what happens when I inactivate. Dan Koehl (talk) 06:00, 27 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
Maybe it is the citation format („ISBN 84-00-07375-4: 332–334“ with a link to the full text under the page numbers). I changed it in Cistus. Can you check if this article escapes your bot now? RLJ (talk) 09:41, 27 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
Yes @RLJ:, that one passed through without change now. Thanks for your support and understanding. It would be best, however, to create a script that would accept that format you use, since there's nothing wrong with it, I guess. Bit if its OK with you to change the format, that would help a lot in the present update, I have soon gone through all files on Wikispecies. Dan Koehl (talk) 09:49, 27 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
OK, I will change the format in the other articles. RLJ (talk) 09:57, 27 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thanks a lot. Dan Koehl (talk) 09:59, 27 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Fix tags edit

Wikispecies:Oversight has broken tvar tags. --Wargo (talk) 15:08, 8 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Another correction the References need edit

I see you're still hard at work on the refs. I intended to ask you to see to another correction if you've the time and inclination: to remove the bold type from volume numbers per consensus (see Help:Reference section).

For example to turn:

  • Fairmaire L. 1879: Descriptions de coléoptères nouveaux ou peu connus du Musée Godeffroy. Journal du Musée Godeffroy. Hamburg, 14: 80-114.

Into:

Hamburg, 14: 80–114.

Thanks, Mariusm (talk) 16:29, 6 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Yes @Mariusm:, why not? I am still on M... this will take time, and its good if the edits cover as much as possible. I will look into the configuration. Dan Koehl (talk) 16:38, 6 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
I intended to make the two requests together, but forgot about it. Mariusm (talk) 16:44, 6 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Mariusm:. I think this works: 1 2. Dan Koehl (talk) 22:12, 7 March 2017 (UTC) I wil run this on test for sme 100 edits and evaluate. Dan Koehl (talk) 22:13, 7 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
Just a minor correction (forgive my pedantry) you turned 6(2) into 6 (2) it has to be 6(2) without the space between volume and fascicle. Mariusm (talk) 07:57, 9 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
ooops. Dan Koehl (talk) 09:55, 9 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Sorry to raise the alarm flag again: There's an unnecessary space between the volume number and the following ":" - For example

  • Nunomura 2000: Terrestrial isopod and amphipod crustaceans from the Imperial Palace, Tokyo. Memoirs of the National Science Museum, 35 : 79–97.

should be:

  • Nunomura 2000: Terrestrial isopod and amphipod crustaceans from the Imperial Palace, Tokyo. Memoirs of the National Science Museum, 35: 79–97.

Mariusm (talk) 16:36, 9 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Mariusm:, I think now its working, see the edits under my userspace, not the Bot. Dan Koehl (talk) 17:30, 9 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
Not yet - Pseudophilautus semiruber has Records of the Indian Museum, 9 : 301–307. with space between the "9" and the ":". Mariusm (talk) 17:52, 9 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Mariusm:,I think you have better eyes than me, for me it ooks OK now. Dan Koehl (talk) 18:14, 9 March 2017 (UTC) Please confirm s I can change to Bot. Dan Koehl (talk) 18:17, 9 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
I edited the Pseudophilautus semiruber to remove the space - Please see the diff Mariusm (talk) 18:25, 9 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

OK @Mariusm: I will revert your edit, and see if the AWB now solves the problem. Dan Koehl (talk) 18:31, 9 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

I hope now theres no errors. I turn on the Bot, and eventually leave soon, didn't sleep last night, so I have to catch up. Dan Koehl (talk) 19:28, 9 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Taxonav box edit

@Dan Koehl: Hi Dan could you please change the taxonav wording in the collapse box to "Classification System: APG IV". I had a look but got rapidly lost in nested templates! I think I have made all the relevant taxa changes at order downwards several months ago, but this should have an independent cross check. If there are higher level changes needed then I think we need a VP discussion. Thanks Andyboorman (talk) 11:57, 9 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Oversight edit

Hi Dan, I noticed the two requests for oversight. I know that it's kind of late to comment, but do we really need such rights on Wikispecies? I mean: how many needs for such actions are needed yearly? More than 2-3? --Ruthven (talk) 15:40, 12 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Ruthven:, since its not a question regarding my person but about the right? I move your question to to the rfc. Dan Koehl (talk) 11:55, 13 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Unwanted space - please stop the bold conversion. edit

Hi, your bold-removing still isn't perfect. You insert a superfluous space between x(y) to make it x (y). See the diff. Please stop the process until you fix this. Mariusm (talk) 08:12, 14 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Maybe someone else wants to continue. Dan Koehl (talk) 08:16, 14 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
Can you show me the regex you use so I can have a look at it? Mariusm (talk) 08:24, 14 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

It's easy: On the code:

       <Find>([0-9]+)</Find>
        <Replace>$1 </Replace>

Just delete the space after the $1. Mariusm (talk) 10:16, 14 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

I saw this yesterday (when editing Amanda Reid) and even though it isn't a huge issue, it's a shame it doesn't get fixed while AWB is fiddling with the pages anyway. If you like I can take over in a day or two Dan. As of this writing I haven't got AWB installed, hence the slight delay. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 11:50, 14 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Mariusm:, I told you before, you have much better eyes than me, I have now tried the config with your correction, and it seems to work fine, please take a look! Dan Koehl (talk) 21:45, 24 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

User:‎MewtwoBot edit

Hi Dan! This user has made a lot of edits on your userpage which weren't too useful, so I just told you about them. And in his/her name there is the word "BOT" which can be misleading. --BanKris (talk) 10:05, 15 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

And User:ClitheroeBot as well. They dindn't do any useful up to now. --BanKris (talk) 10:10, 15 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thanks @BanKris:, maybe we shuld have them blocked as well...Dan Koehl (talk) 10:26, 15 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
And I have one more question: What should I do when I see vandalism during patrolling? Do we have a page for "Report vandalism" or I have to ask for somebody? And if we have not got any page for that it could be useful to make one. Thanks for the answer, BanKris (talk) 16:51, 16 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
Hello @BanKris: My advise is to add a vandalism template to the vandal's talk page, however please chose wisely among the different templates so that it correlates to the severity of the malevolent act. For instance using the Uw-vandalism4 template to hit a fairly innocent edit by a newcomer with a note in bold text shouting "This is your last warning. The next time you vandalize Wikispecies, you may be blocked from editing without further notice!" is of course over the top, and counterproductive.
The use of those templates is fairly well monitored by admins and bureaucrats, and together with the data we gather from Recent Changes (in combination with lists of unpatrolled edits) that's generally enough. In particularly severe cases of vandalism I recommend also adding a heads-up on the Administrators' Noticeboard, which is monitored 24/7 by yours truly and other admins. All the best wishes, and happy editing, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 17:27, 16 April 2017 (UTC).Reply

;-) Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 11:22, 11 July 2017 (UTC).Reply

AutoWikiBrowser and typos edit

Hi Dan, I am wondering how AutoWikiBrowser works. I noticed that you corrected the German word "Autors", so I added a comment in Wikispecies:AutoWikiBrowser/Typos. But in subsequent edits, you corrected it again, see e.g. [1], [2]. Is there the possibility to selectively choose which word needs to be fixed? Also, I do not speak Swedish but it seems to me that in this edit, the word "Japans" does not need to be corrected. Kind regards, Korg (talk) 08:44, 14 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Korg:, you did the right thing, thanks, and sorry about the three files. For sure, for every time I go through the files, solutions for the problems you described will hep avoid new errors. The Lang template is oe of them. The configurations you did at the Wikispecies:AutoWikiBrowser/Typos is another. Needless to say, the corrections of hundred of files with plainly misspelled words, is a tiring work, which would of course be good if a bot could take care of, but it seems difficault at this stage, so manually spellchecking all the files is still needed. Thanks a lof for your feedback! Dan Koehl (talk) 10:36, 14 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
You're welcome! Just to let you know, you added twice the Lang template in several pages (e.g. [3]), but I removed it as it is redundant. Best wishes, Korg (talk) 20:57, 15 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thanks a lot @Korg:. Im once again going through the files. converting hyphen to dashes, please give me a note if you see anything strange. Dan Koehl (talk) 21:01, 15 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Strange @Tommy Kronkvist:, but that was back in February, I hope you have not seen any recent edits like that? Dan Koehl (talk) 13:02, 29 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
Nope, neither any old nor more recent – that's the only one I've come across so far. But I'll of course ping you if I find another. Perhaps we should check the KoehlBot logs for February template edits, just to make sure? –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 13:11, 29 October 2017 (UTC).Reply
There are of course a huge amount of logged edits to check… Since this particular edit was made in February 16 I settled for checking the 20,000 or so February 14 to February 18 logs, and in that span there are no other pages being blanked by KoehlBot. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 13:57, 29 October 2017 (UTC).Reply
@Tommy Kronkvist:, This is very strange. I dont understand this? Dan Koehl (talk) 14:02, 29 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
I see thousands of edits during that time, including the "(-847)‎ .. Template:El-Hawagry et al., 2016 (using AWB)" blanking: https://species.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Contributions/KoehlBot&dir=prev&offset=20170215232111&limit=2000&target=KoehlBot As far as I can see it was not inactive. Perhaps you need to clean your browser cache or something? In either case it's a very exotic edit – all the other edits have rather descriptive edit summaries, but this one only says "using AWB". –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 14:27, 29 October 2017 (UTC).Reply

User talk page archive search code syntax edit

Hi Dan. It seems the search function for your talk page archives doesn't work. For instance, a search for the word "patrol" doesn't generate any hits, despite the fact that the lemma is listed 67 times in the five archives. You can use my talk page as an example of a working search function if you like, were the "prefix" code string is roughly equivalent to the "archive" one in yours. However, please be aware that unlike you I do not use MABot to automatically archive my talk page. Instead I've built all my archives and the search function myself – but it doesn't include any "auto-archival" functionality. I take the opportunity to ping @MABot: here in order the make the bot operator aware of the problem. Kind regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 14:54, 16 November 2017 (UTC).Reply

Thanks, Tommy, I will look into this. Hopefully MABot can be redesigned. Dan Koehl (talk) 15:18, 16 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
You're welcome. I find MABot to be a good idea, but it has often proved to be rather buggy – hence I don't use it. For instance the Village Pump archives created by the bot include the Archive top template, since it is called from the |archiveheader = archive top code snippet in the MABot section of the Village Pump page code. As a result, the "Archive top" template is automatically added by the bot to all of the VP archives (hence notifying users that the archives should not be tampered with). Oddly enough the template is not used in your talk page archives, even though you use the same call in your code? Inconsequent, to say the least. So to sum it up, the actual archiving seems to work well, but the bot is having frequent problems with some of the "extra" features… –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 19:18, 16 November 2017 (UTC).Reply
Hello again. I've compared the code of your talk page to Andy Mabbett's, who also use MABot for archiving. Right off the bat I can spot two differences: Andy has included the template string, and searching his talk page archive works fine. I haven't done a thorough check hence doesn't know whether this is the actual solution, but perhaps it's a starting point? Then again his archive (so far) contains one page whereas you have five, so I dunno...
Tommy Kronkvist (talk page, including 3 archives), 17:58, 26 November 2017 (UTC).Reply

Hello. Sorry for the late reply, but notifications to my bot won't get my attention (while notifications to me will of course). I'm sorry if MABot archival is not meeting the expectations, really. All I do is to run the script provided by pywikibot suite. If it is causing issues, please let me know if you want this disabled as I don't want, of course, causing damage to the projects. If I can help with anything else please let me know as well. Thanks, —MarcoAurelio (☎ talk) 13:05, 9 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Tommy Kronkvist and MarcoAurelio:, I followed Tommys suggestion and added , as well as removing the old search field, and now it seems to be working fine. Dan Koehl (talk) 22:58, 14 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

A job for KoehlBot? edit

Hello Mr. bot operator! Having a look at Special:WantedPages I see that the page name "New Zealand" appears as red linked on 4,603 pages. Creating such a page is of course way out of scope of the Wikispecies project; hence I ask if it would be possible for KoehlBot to simply delete the links instead? The name of the country should of course remain intact, but IMHO the wiki link brackets surrounding it should be removed (in which case it would also automagically disappear from the "Special:WantedPages" list, as soon as the database catches up).

With the one (1) exception by Franz Xaver used in Wikispecies:Village Pump/Archive 36#Fait accompli, all of the remaining 4,602 instances are explicitly only used on taxon page talk pages, and solely relate to the geographical distribution of the different taxa. The NZ links were all created in good faith by Thorpe, but regardless of good intentions they are of course still out of scope. –Best regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 17:57, 24 February 2018 (UTC).Reply

Sounds easy @Tommy Kronkvist:, I will give it a try within hours. But I will try it out on my own account, before running on bot. :) Dan Koehl (talk) 18:14, 24 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Ill go through a number of the files from the list manually @Tommy Kronkvist:, please help me go through the edits, in order to see that the changes comes out correct, so I can let bot take over. Dan Koehl (talk) 19:55, 24 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
Seems that the word "etc." is used as a comment after a couple of line breaks, this seems irrelevant, Ill delete those "etc." as well. Dan Koehl (talk) 20:04, 24 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
Indeed. Also, the phrase New Zealand Species is used fairly frequently, and should perhaps be changed to New Zealand species (with lowercase "species" as well as link removal). A small thing, but still. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 20:13, 24 February 2018 (UTC).Reply

───────────────────────── I've checked all of the 101 "NZ link" edits you've made so far, and they all look alright to me. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 20:22, 24 February 2018 (UTC).Reply

Yes they do, now Im just trying to filter out where Species starts with a capital EXCEPT for when Species starts a sentence, like in Talk:Gnaphalopoda. Dan Koehl (talk) 20:27, 24 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
I believe its working now @Tommy Kronkvist:, with regex: (?<!=\s)(?<!\=)(?<!\*\s)Species it filter out all words (Species) written with capital, unless they appear after a *(space), or after a =(space), or after a =. Now checked 200 edits, they look allright. Will soon relase the bot. Dan Koehl (talk) 21:47, 24 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
Sounds good. I'm no longer as fluent in regular expressions as back in the days, but I still use them fairly frequently (though seldom for Wikimedia purposes). I often tend to mix up Perl specific syntax with the POSIX ditto, but luckily the differences are small and these days there are good software tools that can help out (which I guess also is the reason for me forgetting some of the regex patterns...) In order to spot any unlikely errors I'll randomly check out your AWB/KoehlBot edits throughout the next couple of days, but as you said earlier it's a fairly straightforward job that shouldn't pose any real problems for a well structured bot. Thank you for your good work. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 00:28, 25 February 2018 (UTC).Reply

Editing other peoples' talk page contributions edit

I'm not sure about the norms on wikispecies, but on en.wiki, we don't edit other people's talk page contributions as you did here. Was there a point you were trying to make? Stuartyeates (talk) 03:12, 25 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hello @Stuartyeates: The reason is that the "New Zealand" link is out of scope for Wikispecies: it's a type of page that should never be created here at Wikispecies, since it has nothing to do with taxonomy or biological nomenclature, and Wikispecies is not Wikipedia. The deleted red link on your talk page is one of 4,600 "New Zealand" links deleted during the past few days. Most of them were deleted by automated bots, and other similar out-of-scope links are frequently deleted as well. Please read the presently ongoing discussion Special:Wanted pages at the Wikispecies' Village Pump for more information about this specific issue. –Best regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 09:43, 25 February 2018 (UTC).Reply
Dear @Stuartyeates:, I am sorry if you felt bothered, and I understand, normally we dont change other peoples talk pages on Wikispecies. I hope that @Tommy Kronkvist: description of the cleanup of gave you an explanation as to why I removed the link brackets New Zealand from red linked New Zealand on your talk page. Please also see relevant discussions on the Village pump. Dan Koehl (talk) 11:20, 25 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

E-postlista edit

Hej Dan.

Thanks @Tommy Kronkvist:, I agree that the unblock-template must be made. As for the case with that user, do you think it needs any certain measures? It seems his discussion page is functional, which at the moment probably is enough? Dan Koehl (talk) 11:28, 14 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Well, even though the unblock template is inoperative the user obviously wants us to reconsider the indefinite block. (I only saw their request by mere coincidence while checking up on unpatrolled edits, so we need that template up and running.) I feel that their request must be dealt with in one way or another. Even if it may be too early (?) to unblock just yet, simply ignoring the request is unprofessional, probably against Wikimedia policy, and quite frankly also a bit rude. As for "any certain measures", I'm undecided, but opening up a discussion on their talk page to clear up any misconceptions and tie up any loose ends will probably be a good enough start. As for the user's request to have a private sandbox I say nah, that seems unnecessary as long as the user account is blocked. If and when the user is unblocked they can create such a sandbox themselves, but until then the block should also subsume any user account subpages.
Lastly, if we decide to unblock we should also have a look at the similarly named user accounts GermanGamer1, GermanGamer7, and Germangamer42 (links to their Global Account Information, respectively). Those accounts are probably unrelated but for the sake of the matter we might just as well keep an eye out. Then again, I guess we always do... Regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 13:36, 14 March 2019 (UTC).Reply
@Tommy Kronkvist:, Its of course easy to block the user. If you think its worth a try, I have nothing against an unblocking, to give the user a chance to produce anything constructive, apart from taking time from the community, by trolling different user pages. And if, and when the user starts trolling again, without making any valuable constributions, its easy to block again.? Dan Koehl (talk) 15:48, 14 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Indeed. You make the call – however bear in mind that starting at lunch tomorrow I will be offline and out of town most of the weekend doing other work, and will not be here as an active patroller during that time... :-) Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 15:53, 14 March 2019 (UTC).Reply

Adding a blank line edit

Hi Dan, Can you explain why you are recently inserting a blank line on author pages between DEFAULTSORT:xxx, xxxx and

Category:Taxon Authorities using the AWB. Is there any good reason for this? Kempf EK (talk) 14:02, 31 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

I've actually been pondering this myself for some time. Even though DEFAULTSORT is a "magic word" rather than a category, in reality the only thing it really does is set a default Category Sort Key for the author page. In my opinion, because of this it belongs together with the other categories, rather than in a section of its own. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 23:54, 31 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
(restoring) Actually, AWB genfixes do the exact opposite of the changes made by Dan. Anyway, I see no point in doing such cosmetic edits en masse either. 𝟙𝟤𝟯𝟺𝐪𝑤𝒆𝓇𝟷𝟮𝟥𝟜𝓺𝔴𝕖𝖗𝟰 (𝗍𝗮𝘭𝙠) 21:37, 12 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Svenska översättningar edit

Hej. Mvh, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 17:56, 3 January 2022 (UTC).Reply

How we will see unregistered users edit

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Thanks, but unfortunately it isn't done. As you can see in the User rights log for my user account you changed my Translation administrator status from "Does not expire" to "Temporary". This is wrong, since membership of the Translation administrator user group isn't time limited. Please revert this change.
Instead, you should have added me to the Interface administrators user group, which you didn't. Please do.   (For reference, the current number of Interface administrators as of this writing (i.e. zero) can be seen here.)
Kind regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 17:21, 15 May 2022 (UTC).Reply
Thank you for your swift remediation of the above issues. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 18:45, 15 May 2022 (UTC).Reply

Kosmopolit? edit

Hej igen Dan!

This matter has been resolved. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 02:00, 2 January 2023 (UTC).Reply

Aktivitetsrapport edit

Hej Dan! :-)
Med allra vänligaste välmening, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 17:42, 2 May 2023 (UTC).Reply

Absolut Tommy, och tidsmassigt passar det bra for mig att engagera mig mer in WS. Tack for din paminnelse! Dan Koehl (talk) 12:35, 7 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
