Welcome to Wikispecies! edit

Hello, and welcome to Wikispecies! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages you might like to see:

If you have named a taxon, then it is likely that there is (or will be) a Wikispecies page about you, and other pages about your published papers. Please see our advice and guidance for taxon authors.

If you have useful images to contribute to Wikispecies, please upload them at Wikimedia Commons. This is also true for video or audio files containing bird songs, whale vocalization, etc.

Please sign your comments on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your username (if you're logged in) and the date. Please also read the Wikispecies policy What Wikispecies is not. If you need help, ask me on my talk page, or in the Village Pump. Again, welcome! -- Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:54, 23 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Is Camellia sinensis not called "albero del tè" in Italian? —Justin (koavf)TCM 20:39, 22 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Koavf: Honestly, I don't think I've ever heard it. But the main reason for eliminating one of the two vernacular names is in this help page. I also discussed this topic with user Tommy Kronkvist... --Discanto (talk) 20:53, 22 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
Nice. Having both is better in case we don't know (I don't really know Italian, just some Spanish) but if you're an Italian speaker and can verify that one is clearly more popular, that's better. Grazie again. —Justin (koavf)TCM 21:14, 22 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Koavf: Thanks also to you for the contribution. Greetings. --Discanto (talk) 21:17, 22 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Capitalization edit

Please do not capitalize vernacular names unless the language capitalizes that word. In most languages, the vernacular names of plants are not capitalized. --EncycloPetey (talk) 21:08, 29 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

@EncycloPetey: Initially I was thinking of your own way, then it was pointed out to me that the standard say "Titles of the articles in interwiki always begin with a capital letter (Sentence case). The VN list should follow suit, even when the within-sentence convention for vernacular names is in lower case in some languages...". Therefore I think that my way of operating is correct. --Discanto (talk) 22:08, 29 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
The person who made that suggestion to you changed the Help document to match his viewpoint without discussion. --EncycloPetey (talk) 22:11, 29 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
@EncycloPetey: No, this is not a change by the user @Tommy Kronkvist: (which I ping to get to know) but, if I'm not mistaken, dates back to 2015. Later on, further modifications were made to the help page but noone opposed it, so I suppose they are approved by the community... --Discanto (talk) 22:47, 29 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
@EncycloPetey: I only read now Wikispecies:Requests for Comment --Discanto (talk) 22:51, 29 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
Indeed. The subject was (peripherally) raised for discussion, but there was no consensus. --EncycloPetey (talk) 23:02, 29 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

───────────────────────── @Discanto and EncycloPetey: As a result of this and other discussions, I've re-opened an RfC on the matter. Please see Requests for Comment: Vernacular names, take two. Kind regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 09:46, 30 July 2019 (UTC).Reply
