Translation

I wanted to help translating this page but the template {{/row}} seems to generate wrong wiki code... --Djiboun (talk) 15:20, 16 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

I think that the /row prefix only deals with a formatting or MediaWiki linking issue. I hereby ping @Koavf: who created the page, and perhaps have a more through explanation. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 16:31, 16 July 2016 (UTC).Reply
@Djiboun: What are you trying to do? I'd be happy to help you figure out what you're going for here. —Justin (koavf)TCM 17:48, 16 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
Thank you Tommy. @Koavf:I was helping translating the page Wikispecies:Localization into french using the new translate module. So the french page was created but the tables used in the wikicode are broken. I looked for the source of the problem and I found the problem issue was probably the {{/row}} template. It seems to me that this page is not compatible with the translate module. Could you explain me how the translations in this page are used in the wikispecies pages? --Djiboun (talk) 21:23, 16 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Djiboun: I see. This uses a kind of clever hack of MediaWiki--which again, I must credit to finding on Wikilivres.ca. If you create a page in the MediaWiki namespace then that data will be translated based on user preferences. So I can create a page called MediaWiki:Foo and if create MediaWiki:Foo/fr and just put the word "l'feaux" on the page, that means every instance of "foo" is translated as "l'feaux" if the page is in French and someone uses the {{int:}} magicword. If that's not clear, then in this example, you could have some text that reads: "I have always hated {{int:foo}}!" and if someone's user language is English, he will see, "I have always hated foo!" but if it's French, he will see, "I have always hated l'feaux!" Does that make sense? When you translate this page, please make sure that some things are not to be translated, such as the local names for languages themselves (that is, if you make this page in Spanish, don't change "Deutsch" to "Aleman", etc.) Am I making sense? —Justin (koavf)TCM 01:26, 17 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Koavf: Thanks a lot for your explanation, this page is clear for me now. Then could you explain me the template {{/row}}, especially the last line with the parameter 2 corresponding to the fourth column of the table? I can only see 3 columns in the page table. --Djiboun (talk) 07:38, 17 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

I've found the problem origin, as you can see in my draft page: the template name used in the tables is /row and is understood by mediawiki by a relative path to the current page. As the newly translated pages use a different name (for example …/fr in French), the wikicode refers to the wrong template. So I see 2 solutions needing admin rights:

  1. renaming the template name and correcting the wikicode
  2. adding the full path name of the template in the wikicode

@Koavf: Could you do that? --Djiboun (talk) 06:43, 18 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

This is rather odd. Doing a search I can't see any Wikispecies template name starting with a slash, except {{/Taxonavigation}}. Coincidentally that one is also in French, but only linked to from one user talk page: nothing in main namespace. We do not have a {{/row}} template as fa as I can see. Nor is it present on Meta-Wiki: they only have a {{/Table}} template starting with a slash, with zero pages linking to it. As for MediaWiki, the "mother" of all the wiki code: nope, no template starting with a slash there either, at all. What's going on, really..? –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 08:16, 18 July 2016 (UTC).Reply
@Tommy Kronkvist: For your information, the full name template used in Wikispecies:Localization (and only on this page) is {{Wikispecies:Localization/row}}. --Djiboun (talk) 09:04, 18 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

How do you get rights to add translations? --Hunsvotti (talk) 17:35, 10 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Hunsvotti: These translations are only in the MediaWiki namespace which is restricted to admins. Do you have some suggested translations? —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:58, 10 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
I'd want to add Finnish translations for the headings. There's a banner pointing to Help:Translation, where it says "Visit Wikispecies:Localization to help translate the interface for individual terms on most of our articles", but there's no instructions on how to do this. --Hunsvotti (talk) 06:24, 11 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Hunsvotti: I have changed the text to make it more clear how to edit this page (which is essentially restricted to admins). Please post whatever data you want me to add here or on my talk page. Note that there are also several phrases which will be added in the future. —Justin (koavf)TCM 20:13, 11 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
Great, thanks! I'll get back to you after I've done some research on the right terms. --Hunsvotti (talk) 19:16, 15 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

@MDsmajlik: If you want to localize, you can post to this page, my talk page, or email me. Otherwise, you can translate any other pages marked for translation here in Wikispecies. Thanks for your help! —Justin (koavf)TCM 13:44, 12 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Koavf: OK, than you! I'm translating it, it's here, but it isn't done, now. --MDsmajlik (talk) 14:49, 12 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Why are the red links on this page all available for editing only by admins? I have several friends who are willing to provide translations, but frustrated that they cannot do so directly. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:06, 31 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Pigsonthewing: Because it's in the MediaWiki namespace, which is part of the interface of the site. I guess the thinking is that 1.) most can't be trusted to edit it and 2.) most wouldn't be interested in it anyway. It's a kind of unfortunate circumstance but it makes sense in a way. (For what it's worth, I became aware of this hack via wikilivres:Localization.) It's possible that if someone is made a translation admin he can edit it but I don't think so--I think it just lets you edit translation namespace pages. —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:20, 31 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
In that case, it might be worth someone writing a script to import translations from a page formatted like, say, User:Dungodung/Localization or User:Rachmat04/Localisation. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:26, 31 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
Better still, we could have a way to associate each term with a Wikidata item, and pull the labels from there. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:30, 31 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Pigsonthewing: 100% agreed. Notice that, MediaWiki:Editor never needed to be created because it's already been translated as a part of MediaWiki interface on translatewiki:. —Justin (koavf)TCM 23:23, 31 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
If it's the only way, then I'll apply to become Admin. Methinks 'most can't be trusted to edit it' is a sad approach for a project 'anyone can edit'! Please get this changed as suggested by Andy. PS I have a database of Latin /Welsh names for all living birds, if someone could up them; they're already on WD. Llywelyn2000 (talk) 15:39, 1 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Llywelyn2000: Well, of course you are trusted to edit in general but not the interface of the site. (Although, you could just register at translatewiki: and edit there...) If you have that database, I'd be happy to accept it and see if I can add it to bird entries here. —Justin (koavf)TCM 17:16, 1 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Koavf and Pigsonthewing: I've done a few thousand edits on translatewiki, since my first edit on 14 July 2012, so registration isn't needed! Translation of the interface needs no more trust than an ordinary, single edit of content. Have a bit of faith in mankind! Anyway, I've uploaded the csv database here; when you open it please ensure that the column E includes the following symbols: ê (circumflex) on row one, ŵ on line 971 and ï (dieresis) on row 1056. The CSV file has been saved with UTF16 to preserve these symbols. An ornathologist has taken the last 10 years to coin these Welsh words, and has used the latest Latin names. I found that around 1,400 did not match up with WD (different / older Latin words are used), but the redirect on the enwiki did include many of these, but not all. If we can match 90%, it would be good. When this has been done, I can bot up a link from each article on WP to the corresponding Wikispecies entry. Thanks! Llywelyn2000 (talk) 18:44, 1 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
For your vernacular names, I would hold on until we see what happens with Wikispecies:Village Pump#Fetching vernacular names from Wikidata. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:02, 2 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
