Welcome to Wikispecies! edit

Hello, and welcome to Wikispecies! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages you might like to see:

If you have named a taxon, then it is likely that there is (or will be) a Wikispecies page about you, and other pages about your published papers. Please see our advice and guidance for taxon authors.

If you have useful images to contribute to Wikispecies, please upload them at Wikimedia Commons. This is also true for video or audio files containing bird songs, whale vocalization, etc.

Please sign your comments on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your username (if you're logged in) and the date. Please also read the Wikispecies policy What Wikispecies is not. If you need help, ask me on my talk page, or in the Village Pump. Again, welcome! -- Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:47, 3 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Biographies edit

Thank you for your continued contributions to Wikispecies.

However, I suggest you cease creating biographies such as Dmitri V. Semenov, unless one of the following is satisfied:

  • There is at least one other page linking to them, as the author of a taxonomic name
  • The biography includes bibliographic data about at least one relevant (i.e. taxonomy-related) publication.

Thanks, Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:53, 12 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the suggestion. I started the "Publications" section for Semenov. I'll also expand the other articles I've created. Lyttle-Wight (talk) 12:08, 12 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
Loooking at Miriam A. Stern Sharick, for example, does the subject have any taxonomic contributions? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:26, 24 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Gender in author pages edit

Hello Lyttle-Wight! We don't specificy gender in author pages, is not a standard edit. If you want, you can open a discussion in VillagePump to get a consensus by the community about this kind of edit. Regards, Burmeister (talk) 14:04, 13 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Okay, I'll cease and desist. That having been said, it would be helpful to specify gender for scientists with ambiguous first names such as Tanya Chan-ard, Kim Howell, Michele Menegon, et cetera. Lyttle-Wight (talk) 14:15, 13 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
In a way, we do specify gender on some author pages, namely when adding the {{Taxa authored}} template to author pages of female authors, where we add the gender-specific parameter |g=f like this: {{Taxa authored|g=f}} However please note that this is only done in order to render grammatically correct translations, for example in German. From a taxonomical point of view, the gender of authors is not important as such, however if needed the gender is of course added to every authors' Wikidata item, for example Q21338873 (Tanya Chan-ard), Q21502450 (Kim Monroe Howell), and Q21342070 (Michele Menegon). Best regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 17:42, 13 December 2021 (UTC).Reply
Thanks very much, Tommy, for this explanation. Lyttle-Wight (talk) 19:19, 13 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Format of references edit

Hello Lyttle-Wight, please read Help:Reference section for our preferred formatting style of references at Wikispecies. We set links to the pages of taxon authorities using {{a|name}}. For other scientists, we use {{aut|name}}, without setting a link, because they are out of the project scope. Please add the references to all linked taxon author pages. Kind regards, --Thiotrix (talk) 09:49, 14 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

sortkeys edit

Hi, when you create new author pages, could you include a sortkey in them? This is done with the text {{DEFAULTSORT:Surname, Given names}}, usually at the bottom of a page. These sortkeys allows pages to be ordered by surname in categories. I've already added sortkeys to all pages you created so far (with a few exceptions where someone else had already done it first), so you just need to keep this in mind for future author pages you create. See also Help:Author Names for a general guide to creating such pages. Monster Iestyn (talk) 22:53, 17 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

OK. Thanks. Lyttle-Wight (talk) 23:57, 17 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Eponyms edit

Hello! Eponyms are included as a category in the page of the respective species, not as a list on the author page. See Category:Eponyms of Ramon de la Sagra. Regards Hector Bottai (talk) 10:38, 7 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Gracias, obrigado, thanks, grazie. Lyttle-Wight (talk) 10:50, 7 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Adding author names edit

Please don't add new author names without a link to at least one species which they described or to at least one taxonomic publication which they contributed to. Such 'orphan' authors will be deleted! Mariusm (talk) 15:29, 7 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

I'm working on fixing the "orphans" which I created, adding publications and/or taxa authored. Lyttle-Wight (talk) 11:57, 9 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
Are you sure that such names as Guy-Crispin Gembu Tungaluna are TAXONOMISTS? Did they contribute to a species taxonomy (e.g. described a specific species) or are they just biologists? Mariusm (talk) 15:52, 14 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Veríssimo (authority) edit

Hello Lyttle-Wight, I came across the page Veríssimo (authority) you created. Do you know if there is another use of this name? If it is not the case, the page should be located at Veríssimo or Verissimo. Kind regards, Korg (talk) 11:50, 2 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Bonjour, Korg, thank you for noticing my attempt to create a disambiguation page. I agree that the title of the page doesn't need "(authority)", but I don't know how to remove it. If you can, please do. Also, I find it to be very difficult to add diacritics to Wikispecies edit pages. Why doesn't Wikispecies have a "Latin" drop box to facilitate this as Wikipedia does? I try to add diacritics after the fact using my cell phone, but this is not always possible, especially with some of the diacritics used in slavic languages. The title of the page I created for Luis V. needs an acute accent on the first "i" of his surname. If you could insert it, and also fix the xref, I would appreciate it very much. Merci. Lyttle-Wight (talk) 12:17, 2 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
To remove the "(authority)" part in title, the page needs to be moved. You can do it if you want! :-) When you are on the Veríssimo (authority) page, hover over the "More" drop-down menu at the top of the page (next to the "View history" link), then click "Move". (Note: depending on the visual appearance of the wiki pages defined in your preferences, tab "Appearance" then "Skin", with the "Vector (2022)" skin the "Move" link can be found in the right column.) After that, just enter the new title of the page, Veríssimo, add a reason for the move, then click on the "Move page" button.
Thanks for your comment about the difficulty of adding diacritics, it may not have been raised yet. Having a drop box to facilitate this as Wikipedia does would be a good idea, would you like to suggest it to the community?
For Luis Verissimo, you can move the page to the proper title if you want. Otherwise I'll do it. Korg (talk) 17:44, 2 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for explaining how to edit a title by moving it. I succeeded in fixing both titles and the xref. Thanks so much for your help. Lyttle-Wight (talk) 01:54, 3 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
My pleasure! I'm glad I could help. Korg (talk) 07:17, 4 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
