Capitalization
editJust seen Gryllotalpa gryllotalpa. Some languages names are capitalized, some are not. Can it be normalised. --82.126.36.50 14:51, 12 September 2019 (UTC)
- I think it's okay now, per the Help:Contents guideline. However please note that (contrary to the other languages) English vernacular names should use "Title Caps" rather than "Sentence caps", and that all German proper nouns should always be capitalised (whether part of a vernacular name or not). –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 18:24, 12 September 2019 (UTC).
Collapsible lists for better legibility
editI suggest we make the "Vernacular names" sections collapsible/expandable so that they wont take up as much space on taxon pages with a large number of vernacular names. See for example Columba livia and Passer domesticus where the "Vernacular names" sections takes up 70% of the pages, or more. Making this change only requires minute additions to the code, e.g. see the {{Nadi}}
template.
–Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 02:41, 25 November 2019 (UTC).
- Agree, but maybe make it possible for the option to leave it uncollapsed? I don't think there is a way for it to trigger if more than X languages are used, but most uses probably don't call for collpasing it. Circeus (talk) 05:38, 25 November 2019 (UTC)

Also, could you please add these language codes from Indonesian local languages? The languages have Wikipedia communities under WMID's support.

- Minangkabau (local name: Minangkabau; language code: min)
- Banjar (local name:Banjar ; language code: bjn)

- Toba Batak (local name: Batak Toba; language code: bbc)

- @Wirjadisastra: All done; except we need to add labels for "min" and "nia". If I can figure out where! Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 07:48, 26 August 2020 (UTC)
- @Pigsonthewing: I'm sorry but I don't get what you mean by labels for "min" & "nia". Are the codes causing any bug? Wirjadisastra (talk) 09:22, 26 August 2020 (UTC)
- @Wirjadisastra: There is no bug. You can add names in all of the above languages. If you add the name "Foorbar" in Banjar, the template will display "Banjar: Foobar"; but if you add it in Madurese, it will currently display "mad: Foorbar", and for Nias, "nia: Foorbar". We need to fix these, so that the names of the languages are displayed, instead of their three-letter codes. Apparently this has to be done via Phabricator, so: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T261387 Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 09:36, 27 August 2020 (UTC)

cr and oj
editCould Cree and Ojibwe (ISO cr and oj) be added? The vernacular "Moose" (Alces americanus) in particular comes from Algonquian cognates, and it might be helpful for some other North American animals.--Molandfreak (talk) 02:04, 14 March 2021 (UTC)

- It's already supported in MediaWiki software. It's only one of the varieties, but to the best of my understanding, it's the most common and written one.

The Saami languages with actual orthographies
edit- sma – Southern
- sju – Ume
- sje – Pite
- smj – Lule
- se (also sme) – Northern
- smn – Inari
- sms – Skolt
- sjd – Kildin
The names for these languages in their own language are listed in the Phabricator task WMHack19: Add Saami + Romani languages to Wikidata. Northern and Inari Saami have their own wikipedias, the rest are in the incubator. Northern Saami also has country-specific codes in some wikimedia projects: se-fi, se-no, and se-se. It would be useful if these are also added, if possible. The rest of the Saami languages not listed above do not have official orthographies and should not be added imo to prevent people from adding non-existing spellings to Wikispecies. Thank you for adding the 8 listed above! Yupik (talk) 20:29, 11 August 2023 (UTC)

Please add this
editHello, can you add en-us (American English) as a language, mainly for the Planatus genre, as they are called Sycamore in the USA and Plane in UK and Australia. 204.100.235.120 17:44, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
- Unfortunately not. As vernacular names are not an important part of taxonomy, the vernacular names list in Wikispecies is only a summary; it's not intended to be a comprehensive listing of every local variant, past or present. This has been discussed and decided upon many times during the past several years. Please see the usage section (and the "Simple English" section below it) in our Vernacular Names Guideline for a bit more information.
- –Best regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 10:26, 25 October 2024 (UTC).
