Superregnum: Eukaryota |
Familia: Mochokidae
Subfamilia: Mochokinae
Genus: Synodontis
Species: Synodontis clarias
Name
edit- Synodontis clarias (Linnaeus, 1758): 306. Originally as Silurus clarias.
- Lectotype: NRM 7044. Paralectotypes: NRM 73, (1); plus the two lost and in the NRM unregistratet syntypes ('It. scan. 82' and 'No. 83 in Gronovius (1754)'). Lectotype designation by Silfvergrip (1996). (Originally the species was based on four syntypes. The three paralectotypes are a mix of different species, none of them representing a Synodontis. This was also doubted by Fernholm & Wheeler for the remaining specimen NRM 7044 (which is also lost), but it can easily be proven from the description that it only fits a Synodontis and not a Bagrus as was hypothesized.
- Type locality: Egypt, Nile River
- Original combination: Silurus clarias
- Unjustified emendation: Silurus callarias sensu Bloch & Schneider, 1801 (The species name clarias is an erroneous spelling of callarias, an ancient name for a fish species. Bloch & Schneider (1801) tried to emend this spelling, which is not allowed according to the rules of the ICZN.
