Author question
editHi-
There are 3 ways of listing an author with initials.
1. (W.R.Buck) - with no spaces between the initials
2. (W.R. Buck) - with a space between the last initial and the name.
3. (W. R. Buck) - with spaces between the initials and the name (3 spaces).
I have been following Hafellner's list.
Hafellner's List
Hafellner does not leave a space between initials. -- like (W.R.Buck)
The search engine will not find the name it is not typed correctly.
What is the Wikispecies format for this? Thanks, Ed Uebel 13:33, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

editHello, Under Category:Categories There are 16 subcategories (one being Lichenologists) I wanted to add a subcategory under Lichenologists (labeled Lichen Books) But I was unable to create this subcategory under Lichenologists.
May I get some help in adding this subcategory under Lichenologists? Thanks Ed Uebel 12:24, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
Hopeless case
editHi. What should we do about User:Turtlehead. He obviously refuses to use the formatting rules and does not react on subtle or strong hints. His contributions list is getting extensive, and all have to be reworked. I haven't gone as far as warning or blocking. Any advice? Lycaon 23:43, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

New User Virology
editWhat would it take, or is it even possible, to load up the virology taxonomy from the ICTV:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/ICTVdb/
Please let me know. I'd like to help. Write to my user talk page or better yet, have a virus person leave an e-mail address at my talk page, and we can then discuss a plan off the wiki line. I check my email every day, I don't want to have to check my wikispecies talk page for most of the correspondence that will be needed to get started on this.
Rufus the Red wolf
editThis looked like nonsense and it was that IP's only contribution today (another "birthday" has since been added: Special:Contributions/81.105.190.208), I flagged it for deletion (but that was probably too rude. I was assuming it was funny vandalism but I should've posted a message on the IP's talk page). He or she removed the "delete" template I added. What do you think should be done in a case like this? Do you add welcome and warning messages to the talk pages of shared IPs? GRIN resource
editSince the URL for GRIN could change (just as it did for ITIS), I created templates: Template:GRINnomen and Template:GRINgenus (Template:GRIN moved to GRINnomen) and tested them on pages: Clitoria mexicana and Allium respectively. The links these templates create currently displays just the "Nomen number" or "Genus number", but let me know if you think something else would be better. --Georgeryp 15:21, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

Centrophorus
editJust wanted to let you know regarding the species Centrophorus uyato. I deleted it originally when I made the species pages because it is a synonym of C. granulosus and C. harrissoni. According to Compagno's "Sharks of the World", "Centophorus granulosus, C. harrissoni, and probably other Centrophorus species have often been identified as Centrophorus uyato, which is based on a species of Squalus from the Mediterranean Sea and is incorrectly applied to Centrophorus." Based on this information I placed C. uyato in synonymy with the existing two species. I will wait on your answer before deleting uyato as a full species.--Tambja 14:03, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

example
editHi, before i continue to edit more new species, i like you to take a look about this one Strombus cancellatus, i like you to change it the way it supposed to be so i can take example from this (all species (gastropoda) and some existing ones are all alike), i will change them to this example (excepts for the cat's - i like to continue with these - i hope i can make people here to understand about the purpose of it), Henk_K 17:51, 14 October 2007 (UTC)
- Before I do that, I need to understand which is the currently accepted name Varicospira cancellata or Strombus cancellatus? We don't usually keep articles for outdated names but simply redirect to the latest one.
Help:Name section#Synonyms--Open2universe 12:59, 15 October 2007 (UTC)
- I totally disagree with redirecting the synonyms, why? i just don't trust the internet resources that a name indeed is changed, a lot of sites put information from publications and results of their own ïnvestigation"as a copypast to get a complete layout. the synonyms themselves are ones subscribed from a typespecimen or holotype by a respected author and is part of in that time respected and approved literature. test layout
editMÔj, what do you think of this testlayout? : Harpago , it save a lot of space within sight, the tabel as created can be formatted into a template, so user only have to fill in some answers, the template place them where you want it, we even can work with coloures and images, Henk_K 17:18, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
- I've made an example with a species as well, and putting some animal information with it, what do you think? Henk_K 19:46, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
- Sorry I did not get back to you sooner. It looks as though you decided against the table structure. I understand that you are trying to make it better, and it is hard to make changes. Don't give up.--Open2universe 21:23, 20 October 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, my idea was to create somekind of easy formular, wich could be used for creating articles as standard and for easy converting into a database structure, only the converting doesn't seems to work out, Henk_K 21:36, 20 October 2007 (UTC)
Stratigraphical occurance
editHi, some important information about fossil occurance in a geological timescale can be given in the following example, what do you think:Henk_K 12:29, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
- If it makes sense for fossils, then I think that makes sense. You should ask others at the village pump. If everyone agrees, then you would need to add it to the help pages and work on keeping the section consistent.--Open2universe 12:33, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
- Ok thanks, i will do that, but what do you think about the interwiki's should i left them where they are now, or move them to the leftmenu, i even found a reference to join with it, Henk_K 12:39, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
- I am not sure. I have been struggling with that on the author pages and have considered changing them. (Once upon a time we did not have the side bar links at all so everything was in the article). Putting it the way you did makes it very clear that there are links. --Open2universe 12:44, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

Question about RfA consensus
editIs there a minimum amount of support I need for my RfA? I realize Wikispecies isn't as busy as, say, en.wp (I remember the first time I looked at Special:Recentchanges and saw my name a few hours after editing and being very surprised), so I don't know if there are any requirements about how many participants an RfA must have before passing.

Am I on the right track?
editHi Open2Universe, I just created my first species page of Saxifraga nivalis (a plant I have a special relationship to after taking this photo). I have noticed that you have created several other Saxifraga species pages. Would you be so kind to look at the page I have created and check if everything is as it should be? I have not been able to retrieve the type locality and information about the holotype. Do you have any hints on how I can retrieve this from sources on the internet? There are some named sub-species, but none of them are accepted. Are these considered synonyms? Should I create redirects for the synonym sub-species? Thank you. -- Slaunger 22:30, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you for your message (I prefer you just reply on your talk page to avoid fragmented discissions, I am watching your talk page).
- Is there some recommended way on indicating on a page that it lacks some data, which should be there according to the guidelines, in this case the type locality and holotype. For instance, one could create and add
{{NeedsTypeLocation}}
and{{NeedsHolotype}}
templates to such pages. These templates could add a discrete inline infoboxes in the name sectio on the page about the missing information (not those big needs-this-and-that templates you see on top of, e.g., the english Wikipedia). These templates could add the page to new Category:Missing Type Location and Category:Missing Holotype, such that these categories would link to all pages needing this info.

- A simpler approach is to have just a single template, like
{{NeedsLocationOrHolotype}}
as I guess most often both the type location and holotype reference is missing.

- If you think it is a good idea i could try to make the templates or perhaps this should be discussed at the VP first?
- Not currently. Perhaps you could create one that passes in Location, Holotype, References, Authority etc. Then you should run it by VP.
- Considering the large fraction of pages, which lack this information I agree with you that, currently, this is not a good idea. Rather use the resources on adding content.
- Not currently. Perhaps you could create one that passes in Location, Holotype, References, Authority etc. Then you should run it by VP.
- Right now I just have some question marks on the Saxifraga nivalis page. Should I delete them for now?
- I think so. There are so many missing this information
- Considering the above, pragmatic conclusion for now, I agree. I have deleted the lines.
- I think so. There are so many missing this information
- Another template question. i noticed there is an
{{ITIS}}
template. I used that in Saxifraga nivalis. Am I correct there are no analogous templates for references to USDA and, e.g., ZipCodeZoo. Would it not be a good idea to have such tamplates to streamline the way references to internet resources are done and assure that they are done as recommended on those sites? Again, I could try to create them, if you find this could be valuable.- No, I wouldn't assume that they don't exist. I found a PLANTS template and just now put it in Category:External link templates.
- OK, I think I will search for further templates an add them to that category as well if I find more.

- Finally, did you see my questions in the previous post about redirects of known synonyms of sub-species? -- Slaunger 09:45, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
- Sorry about that. Yes I would create the redirect.
- OK, I will do that.
- Thanks for caring about this level of housekeeping. It can be a little daunting at times.

- Yes, the learning curve is a little steeper here than on other Wikimedia projects as the pages need to adhere closely with an agreed format for future database import readiness. But hey, I do not mind. -- Slaunger 20:58, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

CommonsTicker failed to post update: species-wikimedia-org.ticker.wiki.20071222221902.pending
editCommonsTicker was unable to post the latest update to the ticker page. This may happen if there is a temporary problem with the servers or the network, or if the page has grown verry big.
If you use "append" mode, please keep the page reasonably short, perhaps by moving old entries that still need attention to a separate page, which could be included in the main ticker page. Note that CommonsTicker will re-try to post the update on the next run.
If you use "replace" mode, please consider requesting a shorter interval (less days) to watch. CommonsTicker will not try to re-post the update, since it will replace the entire page on the next run anyway.

Please answer
editHello Open2universe,
Once, I asked questions to wikispecies (here. You moved my questions to here), but still nobody answered my questions.
As I said in my remarks, I very often read proposals to suppress all links to wikispecies from wikifrance (because of my remarks). I am one of the last on wiki france to add links to wikispecies and the last to refuse the suppression of links to wikispecies.
My main question was "why don't you provide the classification followed by your articles (on each article)". Look at Liliopsida. What classification does it follow? I have no idea, even if, believe me I know some things about classification.
Please, please, answer me or provide me with names of users who could answer me.
Best regards Liné1 10:21, 24 December 2007 (UTC)
- Sigh, I don't have a good answer for you. Is it mostly plants that you think we should have the classification for? Or is it all species? If it is plants, then I think we can propose adding it. It is a limited number and we could create templates for them. I would be willing to do that. --Open2universe | Talk 16:31, 24 December 2007 (UTC)
- Hi Open2universe,
- No the classification specification is for all groups.
- For example, for birds, Sibley has totally redesigned the bird classification (wikifrance now follows Sibley).
- The idea is that, at the beginning, the biologists were capable of publishing a whole classification by their own (like Linné). Recently, of course, they published classifications limited to a group (birds, flower plants...).
- Look at:
- fr:Classification_classique (for all groups)
- en:List of systems of plant taxonomy (for plants only)
- cannabaceae in all the classifications (here you will understand the importance for precising the classif)
- en:APG II system the current phylogenetic classication for plants.
- For example, I know that wikispecies for mammals will now follow the web site MSW. It is important to specify it in all the migrated mammal taxon, in case the migration is not totally complete (some article could follow one classif, other follow MSW v2 and new article following MSW v3).
- And of course, in the future wikispecies will have to move to the new phylogenetic classications. But those classifications changes every year. So it is important for each article to says: this article follows APG or APG II or follows a newer version publish on the APWebSite.
- Look at This web page, they precise the classification in the publish APG II and the unpublished APG future version.
- With this link, you will see that wikicommons now precise the followed classification within the template commons:Template:taxonavigation.
- You can imagine the importance of precising the classification if for example a family has totally different content in different classifications.
- Of course, you will discover that wikispecies currently mixes a lot of classification, but that will be sollvable only once the classification is displayed.
- Cheers Liné1 09:38, 25 December 2007 (UTC)
- This issue is very important. A classification is not useful if it does not specify the reference used.
- I met several zoologists who did not understand the basis used by Wikispecies and I regret that.
- Happy new years.--Valérie75 12:00, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
- Hi again,
- She meant classification, not reference.
- Cheers Liné1 15:54, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
- OK, I discovered that you are one of the vandales that put the shame on us all here: you changed the content of Liliopsida without providing the reference nor the classification (You did even add a comment on the modification).
- Don't worry, I won't bother you anymore. Of course, I will have to report what I have discovered here to the different administrators I know.
- I think I added in the past more than 15000 links from wikicommons and wikifrance to wikispecies, but unless you explain me what you did, I won't do it anymore.
- Liné1 06:32, 29 December 2007 (UTC)
