Welcome to Wikispecies!

Hello, and welcome to Wikispecies! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages you might like to see:

If you have named a taxon, then it is likely that there is (or will be) a Wikispecies page about you, and other pages about your published papers. Please see our advice and guidance for taxon authors.

If you have useful images to contribute to Wikispecies, please upload them at Wikimedia Commons. This is also true for video or audio files containing bird songs, whale vocalization, etc.

Please sign your comments on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your username (if you're logged in) and the date. Please also read the Wikispecies policy What Wikispecies is not. If you need help, ask me on my talk page, or in the Village Pump. Again, welcome! (yes, I {{welcomed}} myself... I figure there might be some good info here, and without a red talk link, nobody else was likely to do it) EVula // talk // 21:47, 18 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Vernacular redirects

edit

Please do not add vernacular redirects. They are not within the scope of Wikispecies. If and when we get to be a wiki database we will be able to search by vernacular name, so this effort is double work and puts an extra strain on the server. Thanks. Lycaon 09:06, 1 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "be a wiki database". Creating redirects doesn't create additional strain (and I generally don't worry about performance). However, I'm more than willing to stop creating them if it's outside the project scope. EVula // talk // 08:21, 10 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

My pleasure. That's a very cool feature that I'd never noticed before; as a language-independent project, Wikispecies should definitely reflect that with the Main Page. EVula // talk // 16:54, 23 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ara genus

Hi,

I'm editing and creating species form Ara genus. When I edit vernacular names, the expression Granat Alma apears in the box. Exemple: Ara tricolor. Can you see this? Thanks. Rossicev 15:17, 27 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Oh, you may need to add "?action=purge" to the end of the URL in your browser to see the updated version; sometimes the server will lag a little bit when lots of templates are used. EVula // talk // 15:50, 27 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

edit

Since you're both a commons sysop and a wikispecies sysop, I'll ask you :). Shouldn't Image:Morpho_menelaus.png either be uploaded locally and protected or protected on commons to prevent vandalism? Monobi 02:13, 9 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, I get around. :) I'm pretty sure that anons can't upload a local version, and any local vandalism tends to get jumped on pretty quickly (one of the benefits of a fairly small project). Ironically, I just noticed some old Commons vandalism on Image:Blue morpho butterfly.jpg, so at least something might need to happen on that side of things... I'm 99% sure that we don't need to upload a local version, but I'll double-check with someone a bit more knowledgeable (though not right now; I'm on my laptop during a break, and all my email addresses and whatnot are at home). EVula // talk // // 02:25, 9 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Classification is never provided

edit

Hi,
It is a desperate call that I make here. Wikispecies is doing wrong, many french admin think so, and I can't let it happen without reacting. I already posted something here, without success.
Wikispecies has for purpose to provide the classification of taxons, right?
But each taxon has a different content and parents depending on the classification. And there are a lot of classifications for each taxons.:

  • Here is a small list of those classifications.
  • Here is an perfect sample that shows that a taxon name doesn't mean much if you don't provide the classification name.
  • Here is a sample that commons now provides the classification. And of course, there are classical classification and phylogenetic classifications.
  1. From what I understand in reading your articles, wikispecies provides only one classification for each taxon (in wikifrance, we provide 1 classical and 1 phylogenetical classif per taxon)
  2. But you never provide the classification followed.

I think it is urgent that you provide the classification followed by each article in the article. You will discover that all your articles follow different classification.
Look at Liliopsida. It is a total shame. The classification is not provided. The reason is that nobody ever described it that way. Cheers Liné1 06:55, 29 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Oy, I'm probably a bad person to bring this up to. Yes, I'm an administrator here, but it's largely because I'm active in working on a lot of "behind the scenes" stuff (such as adding new languages to the vernacular name template) that requires administrative access, and I have a lot of experience as an administrator on three other projects (two of them also being language independent). When it comes to Wikispecies, I do it out of a love for the concept of making information free to the world (plus I'm a big fan of sharks), but when it comes to the specific taxons and classifications, I'm a bit lost. I'm just a workhorse... EVula // talk // // 06:31, 30 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
Hi,
I understand your work here, but I don't understand why none of the others answers me.
Like you, I like wikipedia for what it is. But many people, even among wikipedia, make fun of wikispecies.
Anytime, I see a problem in wikipedia, I try to solve it with others, but here, is there someone who answers?
Any idea, who I could see? I already asked User:Dario and Mario‎, User:Kempm‎, User:Lightdarkness‎, User:Keith Edkins‎, User:Lycaon‎, User:Ucucha‎, User:Open2universe‎
Thank you — The preceding unsigned comment was added by Liné1 (talkcontribs).
Well, it might be more productive if you find and address the problem you're talking about on a page, that way they can see a working example. I know I'd be more receptive to "see, this is how it should be" rather than "you're wrong". Once they see an example, they might more readily agree with you, and start fixing up everything else as well. EVula // talk // // 16:56, 2 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

But what about Type locality??? Please look at Help:Name section and see that it is perfecly legitimate!!! Mariusm 15:57, 12 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
That is discussing holotypes, which is very first such creature found, not the range of the entire species. As it is, that information isn't generally provided in our articles. EVula // talk // // 16:18, 12 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

URGENT PROBLEM

edit

My continued ability to contribute to Wikispecies depends crucially on being able to protect just one page, called 'New Zealand', which is a faunistic page with links to (unprotected) pages on New Zealand taxa. My "friend" Lycaon keeps unprotecting it! I believe that such faunistic pages are well within the spirit and ideology of Wikispecies, and perhaps a new category ought to be created to accommodate them. However, I need to protect my New Zealand page for the following reasons: (1) in line with the Wikispecies philosophy, I am contributing this information for free, and there are potential conflicts of interest with other people/institutions here in N.Z. who are trying to extract as much funding as possible for similar projects; (2) if the page is open edit, it could very easily deteriorate into chaos, as what is needed is a single consistent view on the fauna. The classification isn't totally "objective", so other people may try to impose their own conflicting opinions and the result could be chaotic. Can the beauracrats please have a vote on this? Regrettably, if I cannot protect this one single page, I will have to leave Wikispecies...
Sincerely,
Stephen Thorpe
Stho002 21:19, 27 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
PS: Other editors can still create their own versions of my 'New Zealand' page, expressing their own opinions, and they can give the pages disambiguated names, e.g. New Zealand, and link them to the appropriate taxa pages independently of me. Hence I am not trying to prevent alternative opinions, I am just trying to prevent alternative opinions from making my page into an unusable mess of conflicting opinions.
Stho002 22:43, 27 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

As it stands, the page you're trying to create is waaay outside our standards. We document species, and that's pretty much it. I wouldn't mind discussing an expansion of our scope, but you're shoe-horning the concept and refusing to budge. Not a productive attitude to take.
I've moved the article to User:Stho002/New Zealand. Do your work on it, then when you're reasonably comfortable with it, post a thread to the Village Pump and we (as a community) can discuss it. EVula // talk // // 02:39, 28 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

An important message about renaming users

edit

Dear EVula,

I am cross-posting this message to many places to make sure everyone who is a Wikimedia Foundation project bureaucrat receives a copy. If you are a bureaucrat on more than one wiki, you will receive this message on each wiki where you are a bureaucrat.

As you may have seen, work to perform the Wikimedia cluster-wide single-user login finalisation (SUL finalisation) is taking place. This may potentially effect your work as a local bureaucrat, so please read this message carefully.

Why is this happening? As currently stated at the global rename policy, a global account is a name linked to a single user across all Wikimedia wikis, with local accounts unified into a global collection. Previously, the only way to rename a unified user was to individually rename every local account. This was an extremely difficult and time-consuming task, both for stewards and for the users who had to initiate discussions with local bureaucrats (who perform local renames to date) on every wiki with available bureaucrats. The process took a very long time, since it's difficult to coordinate crosswiki renames among the projects and bureaucrats involved in individual projects.

The SUL finalisation will be taking place in stages, and one of the first stages will be to turn off Special:RenameUser locally. This needs to be done as soon as possible, on advice and input from Stewards and engineers for the project, so that no more accounts that are unified globally are broken by a local rename to usurp the global account name. Once this is done, the process of global name unification can begin. The date that has been chosen to turn off local renaming and shift over to entirely global renaming is 15 September 2014, or three weeks time from now. In place of local renames is a new tool, hosted on Meta, that allows for global renames on all wikis where the name is not registered will be deployed.

Your help is greatly needed during this process and going forward in the future if, as a bureaucrat, renaming users is something that you do or have an interest in participating in. The Wikimedia Stewards have set up, and are in charge of, a new community usergroup on Meta in order to share knowledge and work together on renaming accounts globally, called Global renamers. Stewards are in the process of creating documentation to help global renamers to get used to and learn more about global accounts and tools and Meta in general as well as the application format. As transparency is a valuable thing in our movement, the Stewards would like to have at least a brief public application period. If you are an experienced renamer as a local bureaucrat, the process of becoming a part of this group could take as little as 24 hours to complete. You, as a bureaucrat, should be able to apply for the global renamer right on Meta by the requests for global permissions page on 1 September, a week from now.

In the meantime please update your local page where users request renames to reflect this move to global renaming, and if there is a rename request and the user has edited more than one wiki with the name, please send them to the request page for a global rename.

Stewards greatly appreciate the trust local communities have in you and want to make this transition as easy as possible so that the two groups can start working together to ensure everyone has a unique login identity across Wikimedia projects. Completing this project will allow for long-desired universal tools like a global watchlist, global notifications and many, many more features to make work easier.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns about the SUL finalisation, read over the Help:Unified login page on Meta and leave a note on the talk page there, or on the talk page for global renamers. You can also contact me on my talk page on meta if you would like. I'm working as a bridge between Wikimedia Foundation Engineering and Product Development, Wikimedia Stewards, and you to assure that SUL finalisation goes as smoothly as possible; this is a community-driven process and I encourage you to work with the Stewards for our communities.

Thank you for your time. -- Keegan (WMF) talk 18:24, 25 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Your administrator and bureaucrat status on Wikispecies

edit

Hello. A policy regarding the removal of "advanced rights" (administrator, bureaucrat, etc.) was adopted by community consensus in 2013. According to this policy, the stewards are reviewing activity on wikis with no inactivity policy.   You meet the inactivity criteria (no edits and no log actions for 2 years) on the wiki listed above. Since that wiki does not have its own rights review process, the global one applies.   If you want to keep your rights, you should inform the community of the wiki about the fact that the stewards have sent you this information about your inactivity. If the community has a discussion about it and then wants you to keep your rights, please contact the stewards at m:Stewards' noticeboard, and link to the discussion of the local community, where they express their wish to continue to maintain the rights.   If you wish to resign your rights, you can reply here or request removal of your rights on Meta.   If there is no response at all after approximately one month, stewards will proceed to remove your administrator and/or bureaucrat rights. In ambiguous cases, stewards will evaluate the responses and will refer a decision back to the local community for their comment and review. If you have any questions, please contact the stewards.
