Vernacular redirects

Please do not add vernacular redirects. They are not within the scope of Wikispecies. If and when we get to be a wiki database we will be able to search by vernacular name, so this effort is double work and puts an extra strain on the server. Thanks. Lycaon 09:06, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

Ara genus

Hi,

Yeah, I get around. :) I'm pretty sure that anons can't upload a local version, and any local vandalism tends to get jumped on pretty quickly (one of the benefits of a fairly small project). Ironically, I just noticed some old Commons vandalism on Image:Blue morpho butterfly.jpg, so at least something might need to happen on that side of things... I'm 99% sure that we don't need to upload a local version, but I'll double-check with someone a bit more knowledgeable (though not right now; I'm on my laptop during a break, and all my email addresses and whatnot are at home). Classification is never provided

Hi,
It is a desperate call that I make here. Wikispecies is doing wrong, many french admin think so, and I can't let it happen without reacting. I already posted something here, without success.
Wikispecies has for purpose to provide the classification of taxons, right?
But each taxon has a different content and parents depending on the classification. And there are a lot of classifications for each taxons.:

• Here is a small list of those classifications.
• Here is an perfect sample that shows that a taxon name doesn't mean much if you don't provide the classification name.
• Here is a sample that commons now provides the classification. And of course, there are classical classification and phylogenetic classifications.

1. From what I understand in reading your articles, wikispecies provides only one classification for each taxon (in wikifrance, we provide 1 classical and 1 phylogenetical classif per taxon)
2. But you never provide the classification followed.

I think it is urgent that you provide the classification followed by each article in the article. You will discover that all your articles follow different classification.
Look at Liliopsida. It is a total shame. The classification is not provided. The reason is that nobody ever described it that way. Cheers Liné1 06:55, 29 December 2007 (UTC)

Oy, I'm probably a bad person to bring this up to. Yes, I'm an administrator here, but it's largely because I'm active in working on a lot of "behind the scenes" stuff (such as adding new languages to the vernacular name template) that requires administrative access, and I have a lot of experience as an administrator on three other projects (two of them also being language independent). When it comes to Wikispecies, I do it out of a love for the concept of making information free to the world (plus I'm a big fan of sharks), but when it comes to the specific taxons and classifications, I'm a bit lost. Like you, I like wikipedia for what it is. But many people, even among wikipedia, make fun of wikispecies.

Well, it might be more productive if you find and address the problem you're talking about on a page, that way they can see a working example. I know I'd be more receptive to "see, this is how it should be" rather than "you're wrong". Type locality & distribution

I've noticed you removed the sections Type locality and Distribution from one of my contributions. take note that Type locality is a legitimate field!!! (see the help section). As to the Distribution section, I'm conducting now a vote at the Village pump for the inclusion of distribution info, so you're wellcome to vote!!

Deleting Antarctoperlaria

UhanaUnited told me that you have deleted Antarctoperlaria with Eusthenoidea and Leptoperloidea. Why did you do this? I have add new species from 2008. If you can tell me which new Superfamilia they are than I can change them. I hope you don't only works with ITIS, Because ITIS is not complete.

URGENT PROBLEM

My continued ability to contribute to Wikispecies depends crucially on being able to protect just one page, called 'New Zealand', which is a faunistic page with links to (unprotected) pages on New Zealand taxa. My "friend" Lycaon keeps unprotecting it! I believe that such faunistic pages are well within the spirit and ideology of Wikispecies, and perhaps a new category ought to be created to accommodate them. However, I need to protect my New Zealand page for the following reasons: (1) in line with the Wikispecies philosophy, I am contributing this information for free, and there are potential conflicts of interest with other people/institutions here in N.Z. who are trying to extract as much funding as possible for similar projects; (2) if the page is open edit, it could very easily deteriorate into chaos, as what is needed is a single consistent view on the fauna. The classification isn't totally "objective", so other people may try to impose their own conflicting opinions and the result could be chaotic. Can the beauracrats please have a vote on this? Regrettably, if I cannot protect this one single page, I will have to leave Wikispecies...

PS: Other editors can still create their own versions of my 'New Zealand' page, expressing their own opinions, and they can give the pages disambiguated names, e.g. New Zealand, and link them to the appropriate taxa pages independently of me. Hence I am not trying to prevent alternative opinions, I am just trying to prevent alternative opinions from making my page into an unusable mess of conflicting opinions.

As it stands, the page you're trying to create is waaay outside our standards. We document species, and that's pretty much it. I wouldn't mind discussing an expansion of our scope, but you're shoe-horning the concept and refusing to budge. Not a productive attitude to take.

Hi, I'm leaving this message on the talkpage of several of the Wikispecies admins. I'll also put it on your Wikipedia talkpage. "using coarse language and is intimidating his fellow wikipedians" should be painfully easy to provide sources for, but you don't; honestly, my reflex in this type of situation is to assume that you've got an axe to grind with him and so I'm inclined to ignore the whole situation. An important message about renaming users

Dear EVula,

I am cross-posting this message to many places to make sure everyone who is a Wikimedia Foundation project bureaucrat receives a copy. If you are a bureaucrat on more than one wiki, you will receive this message on each wiki where you are a bureaucrat.

As you may have seen, work to perform the Wikimedia cluster-wide single-user login finalisation (SUL finalisation) is taking place. This may potentially effect your work as a local bureaucrat, so please read this message carefully.

Why is this happening? As currently stated at the global rename policy, a global account is a name linked to a single user across all Wikimedia wikis, with local accounts unified into a global collection. Previously, the only way to rename a unified user was to individually rename every local account. This was an extremely difficult and time-consuming task, both for stewards and for the users who had to initiate discussions with local bureaucrats (who perform local renames to date) on every wiki with available bureaucrats. The process took a very long time, since it's difficult to coordinate crosswiki renames among the projects and bureaucrats involved in individual projects.

The SUL finalisation will be taking place in stages, and one of the first stages will be to turn off Special:RenameUser locally. This needs to be done as soon as possible, on advice and input from Stewards and engineers for the project, so that no more accounts that are unified globally are broken by a local rename to usurp the global account name. Once this is done, the process of global name unification can begin. The date that has been chosen to turn off local renaming and shift over to entirely global renaming is 15 September 2014, or three weeks time from now. In place of local renames is a new tool, hosted on Meta, that allows for global renames on all wikis where the name is not registered will be deployed.

Your help is greatly needed during this process and going forward in the future if, as a bureaucrat, renaming users is something that you do or have an interest in participating in. The Wikimedia Stewards have set up, and are in charge of, a new community usergroup on Meta in order to share knowledge and work together on renaming accounts globally, called Global renamers. Stewards are in the process of creating documentation to help global renamers to get used to and learn more about global accounts and tools and Meta in general as well as the application format. As transparency is a valuable thing in our movement, the Stewards would like to have at least a brief public application period. If you are an experienced renamer as a local bureaucrat, the process of becoming a part of this group could take as little as 24 hours to complete. You, as a bureaucrat, should be able to apply for the global renamer right on Meta by the requests for global permissions page on 1 September, a week from now.

In the meantime please update your local page where users request renames to reflect this move to global renaming, and if there is a rename request and the user has edited more than one wiki with the name, please send them to the request page for a global rename.

Stewards greatly appreciate the trust local communities have in you and want to make this transition as easy as possible so that the two groups can start working together to ensure everyone has a unique login identity across Wikimedia projects. Completing this project will allow for long-desired universal tools like a global watchlist, global notifications and many, many more features to make work easier.

Your administrator and bureaucrat status on Wikispecies

Hello. A policy regarding the removal of "advanced rights" (administrator, bureaucrat, etc.) was adopted by community consensus in 2013. According to this policy, the stewards are reviewing activity on wikis with no inactivity policy.   You meet the inactivity criteria (no edits and no log actions for 2 years) on the wiki listed above. Since that wiki does not have its own rights review process, the global one applies.   If you want to keep your rights, you should inform the community of the wiki about the fact that the stewards have sent you this information about your inactivity. If the community has a discussion about it and then wants you to keep your rights, please contact the stewards at m:Stewards' noticeboard, and link to the discussion of the local community, where they express their wish to continue to maintain the rights.   If you wish to resign your rights, you can reply here or request removal of your rights on Meta.   If there is no response at all after approximately one month, stewards will proceed to remove your administrator and/or bureaucrat rights.
