- Thanks, I have a few suggestions for the Help documentation. I'm guessing I should post those to the Village Pump (as it says above) instead of on the discussion pages in the Help section? What is the convention regarding the use of discussion pages in the Help section? Some look like they contain archived versions of discussions elsewhere. --Georgeryp 17:35, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

editHi, not gone yet ;-) ? I added a logo design for the 100000. Care to have a look? Lycaon 22:26, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah, still here. I saw your logo design. It's the best one yet in my opinion. Hopefully, I'll be able to pop back in whenever people decide to start voting and I'll vote for yours... along those lines, I guess someone should set a "logo submission deadline" to signal when to start voting? For now, I'm just standardizing the taxon pages for the species you used in case someone goes digging.... then I'll be back more often sometime next week. Bye. --Georgeryp 22:36, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
Banksia
editI am wondering why you made some of the changes to Banksia. In Help:Name section#Synonyms it says to use a level-3 subheading for "Synonyms" and to call the section "Synonyms", not "Synonymy". --Georgeryp 13:22, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
- Best put it down to total confusion, my friend. I would be quite happy to toe the line if I just knew where the line was. But the format has been changing so rapidly, and pages are so inconsistent, that I just don't know what I should be doing. In this case I sought advice from Wikispecies:Templates#How a taxon page content should be structured, which uses the word "synonymy", and doesn't say anything about what its section level heading should be. I've now changed back to "Synonyms" and demoted the section again. Hesperian 00:17, 18 May 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for the explanation. Hopefully, this is helping to get the documentation one step closer to being consistent. I changed "Synonymy" to "Synonyms" (assuming that is the consensus?) and I left a comment on Wikispecies:Templates's talk page supporting a previous comment to delete/merge some of that page. --Georgeryp 03:01, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

Bummer
editHi. It's not so straightforward to change the wikispecies logo, as we chose to disable local uploading. See here. I don't have the time to be involved too much, as I'm leaving soon (beginning of June) for Namibia for a month... Somebody would have to take over though. I moreover have a local problem connecting to IRC channels, so I have no clue how to talk to the developers :-( . Lycaon 14:05, 23 May 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for letting me know. I'll see what I can do. --Georgeryp 14:12, 23 May 2007 (UTC)
- I'm asking for help right now on IRC: #wikipedia-en-help (and now #wikimedia-tech). I also saw the mention about MediaWiki:Sitenotice - that's a nice feature. I saw it announce registration for Wikimania 2007 on some of the other sister projects (en:MediaWiki:Sitenotice). What should we put there?: "Congratulations, Wikispecies 100 000+ Articles!" ? or a more language neutral/inclusive version? --Georgeryp 19:19, 23 May 2007 (UTC)
- Even though candidate #5 was the clear winner on Sunday (when I think Wikispecies crossed 100,000) it seems in the days following, there became no clear consensus (candidate #2 got about equal support) so to avoid any kind of dispute, I'm inclined to leave the original logo alone and just be satisfied with the Sitenotice and various PR announcements (Wikispecies:PR). --Georgeryp 15:40, 25 May 2007 (UTC)
- Agreed. Lycaon 23:20, 25 May 2007 (UTC)
OmegaWiki
editWhen you consider taxononomical information and you have a species like Cactus opuntia which is a valid name, you will not have a good way on including this in a flat environment. You want to include information like the publishing date, the author but also what revision replaced this name with something new.
This type of functionality requires a database.
When you have a species like a horse, there are not only the taxonominal names to consider, there are also the breeds and the vernacular names.
This too requires a database because you want to deal with homonyms and ambiguity.
Thanks, GerardM 22:58, 2 June 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for your comments. I am familiar with relational database concepts, having worked with Oracle and a bit of MySQL. I agree that this Wikispecies project does have a lot of non-prose information that begs to be better structured within a database. This would then make it easier to automatically access and manipulate the data. For example, taxon hierarchies are duplicated on en.wikipedia.org, fr.wikipedia.org, etc as well as Wikimedia Commons and other projects. It would be nice to consolidate this redundancy into a single source in the future (see these thoughts). --Georgeryp 23:27, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
Thanks
editHi Georgeryp,
Thanks for the feedback. I'm still stumbling around in here... ;-) I will try to conform with the changes you made in the future... I must admit I'm rather at a loss as to why Template:Aut is used only in the Reference section (it would seem more pertinent in the Name section, really), but I presume there is a good reason. Cheers, -- Visviva 17:12, 9 June 2007 (UTC)
- I'm no kind of "authority" here (I've only been contributing since April) and so I don't have a good sense of the reasoning behind format choices. I'm just trying to keep things consistent, so eventually it all can be easily read into a database. I didn't see a good reason against using Shaw in the Name section at Help:Name section or Help talk:Name section, so I'll revise my statement to: the authority's name, at minimum, should be linked using square brackets, but if someone cared enough about the visual value of using the "aut" template too (e.g. Shaw ) then it may be worth raising the idea to the community at the Wikispecies:Village Pump. --Georgeryp 19:02, 9 June 2007 (UTC)
Thank for showing me, how to formate the species-list (Hydrocephalus. I didn't make it so, because I had seen bad formating overall and I had thought, it's so correct. Question: there is a template for genera-list. How to formate it, if a genus name is a homonym of other genus and its article-name is genusName_familyName? --User:Kingaspis 09:52, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
- You welcome. To answer your question, I think you mean something like Clausia (Brassicaceae). If you look at it on its "parent" page, Brassicaceae, the template format:
Clausia (Brassicaceae)
appears as Clausia but links to Clausia (Brassicaceae). --Georgeryp 14:11, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
References and copyright
editI know that a should add references in the text but sometimes i'm to lazy to do just that.
You raised a copyright question. I just think that animal names aren't copyright protected since scientific names are just facts. For instance when a new species of bird or other high interest species is described various news sources report it and off course also it's name. Most of the names in the checklist are old names described long ago, and easily accessed from other sources such as itis.gov or zoobank.org etc. So in essence, I could just have found the same names from the open source of US. government site itis.gov Isfisk 16:09, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
- That sounds reasonable. I'm not a copyright expert, nor am I trying to be a pain. I'm just paranoid that some publisher will try to get large amounts of content removed from here one day if: 1) They believe it makes their publication(s) obsolete and/or 2) They believe large amounts of content has been copied (even if slightly modified) wholesale from their publication. Of course that is not true in the case of the Hoffstetterichthys page which I made the initial comment on - since it is only one species and not a copy of a section of the checklist publication in question. Cheers. --Georgeryp 01:54, 12 June 2007 (UTC)
programs for VNbot
editHi there,
Saw your message on the village pump to start automatically adding VNs to wikispecies. I've started working on something similar in perl, albeit semi-automatic. It walks interwiki links from the wikispecies page and gets VNs from page titles, (with the exception of .es and .it) and from a pattern match otherwise, and spits out something which can be cut'n'pasted into wiki pages. Look at Anas_bernieri for example of page where I've used this.
You'll find the code here if you're interested.

'Species' microformat: bot needed
editPlease see: Wikispecies:Microformat. If people agree to apply this microformat, a bot will be needed. Thank you. Andy Mabbett 10:34, 26 June 2007 (UTC)
- I took a quick look at that page. Maybe instead of a bot, the Wikispecies version of the MediaWiki software should be changed? Either that or using a template to wrap the entire taxonav. section so users don't have to enter raw HTML code (The less direct HTML entry, the better - we already have every variation of a line break: <br>, <br/>, <br />). Also, if Wikispecies is eventually going to provide directly some of the content in the taxoboxes on the Wikipedias, the MediaWiki software will have to be modified anyway... just a few thoughts from a novice user. I see they have microformats working on the taxoboxes there. --Georgeryp 14:37, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

Both of these should redirect to Marchantiophyta, since that is the (only) taxon-based name for this group. I tried to set this up myself, but can't move the page Hepaticophyta to Marchantiophyta over the redirect. --EncycloPetey 17:30, 9 August 2007 (UTC)
- Sounds good. I've tried moving pages in the past but if the target page exists (even if it's just a redirect), I don't think MediaWiki will let you. If a delete is added to the target page (so an admin will know to delete it) and/or just ask an admin directly to delete it, then the move should work. --Georgeryp 17:38, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

about VN, a task and more
edit- First of all, sorry for not reading the heading above in the Village pump about VN, and thanks for answering the question. But my idea (actually I didn't show it very clearly) was to use the same template for VN and interwikis, something like the example below:
{{VernN|
1|en:Fox|fr:Rénard|de:Fuchs|es:Zorro|| |
- in which 1 (or present or exists or interwiki or anything else) makes both interwiki and VN-showing-in-the-page, and 2 (or noninterwiki) only shows in the page. Would be this smarter or clearer?
- Or even better: all in only one template that checks if the name is actually in the correspondent wikipedia and then it would create the interwiki! (maybe slower to download but the easiest to write for the editor). But I don't have so such an knowledge on MediaWiki. Anyway, I have to marinate more the idea.
- The problem would be the vernaculars "wrongly" set for several translations. Could a bot correct this? All the cases for carnivora are here (three cases are even for an interwiki to (unexistent?) several names at the same time) Is this useful? I may compile the list for Primates and subtaxa if needed.
- I will check your abilities as Homo botensis ;) I have in en:User:Sobreira/stub#repertorium some redirections in en.wp that link from scientific name to VN in Carnivora. Can you add this to wsp by bot? (only the ones starting with *, not the five ones with :) Felix lybica & Licalopex vetulus have a page but they are described there as subspecies, so I don't know what to do. In addition, many of the en: pages have an interwiki to nl: but I don't know if your bot can read from en.wikipedia (maybe one day I will learn and I have a own bot myself...!). Thanks a lot. --Sobreira 13:27, 18 August 2007 (UTC)
- Addressing each of your four bullet points above in order:
- Something along those lines could work but it would have to handle four cases, not two: 1) Vernacular name (VN) which is also a valid interwiki (IW), 2) VN with no IW, 3) VN but the IW uses the scientific name, and 4) No VN, but a valid IW based on the scientific name. (I've seen the third case with some birds on fr.wikipedia.org I think?). And the syntax of the template would really have to handle more than these four cases, such as when there is more than one common name under a single language.
- I'm not familar with the internals of how MediaWiki works but I'd guess currently, templates can't check other sites to see if articles exists or not - that's something bots do and so there's a lag.
- Yes, this type of bot checking is what I was suggesting at the VIllagePump - if someone is creating a bunch of pages but doesn't feel like checking for IW's - a bot '*could* be run later to fill in as much as it could. The trick is getting someone who has the time to write the bot...
- So all the taxons with bullets under "repertorium" are VN redirects? There's the same issue here as your previous point - It's a great thing that you have these lists but, at least for the short-term, I don't have the time to write a bot right now to work with this data... higher priority things in the real world - like finding a job! ;-) --Georgeryp 20:14, 19 August 2007 (UTC)

test layout
editMÔj, what do you think of this testlayout? : Harpago , it save a lot of space within sight, the tabel as created can be formatted into a template, so user only have to fill in some answers, the template place them where you want it, we even can work with coloures and images, Henk_K 17:51, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
- Hi. I prefer a non-table format with "==Headings==", although I have experimented with a rough draft of a template, Template:Shell, that users can substitute ("subst:..") to get the current format. Eventually, I hope this project can be put into something where the wiki software itself does the "structure", like a database - see OmegaWiki and User_talk:Georgeryp#OmegaWiki. --Georgeryp 18:12, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
- Hi, i've made an example with a species as well: Harpago chiragra arthritica - with some brief animal info, ofcourse the table can be made without borderlines, when creating a template with these info, the information filled in by users can be stored as a database, someone who creates an article only have to copy and paste something like this, and fill them in :
?template-genus|genus |taxonavigation == ?template-genusname? |name = genusname |author = authorname |year = xxx |references = xxxx |VN= en-xx |species = species ?
- there would be differant templates lik one for familia, geus, species, etc, I will get the border out of Harpago, Henk_K 19:06, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
- What do you think about adding some animal information? Henk_K 19:19, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

- You're welcome. I'm not sure I understand, but I just want to make sure you did not overlook the interwikis in left-hand margin on a page such as Osteichthyes and you'll see the language links are still there under "In Wikipedia". --Georgeryp 18:27, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

- Your other recent edits look good to me. It seems the standard here is if only one or two species are listed, the bracket format is ok to use (e.g.,
Species 1 - Species2
) but if more species are listed, the "S
" template is used. Hope that helps. --Georgeryp 18:21, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Lepidoptera and user 84.84.150.164
editMy interpretation is that we can use their database as reference because the author did not use NHM as primary site to announce their discovery. NHM is merely organizing species record from magazines and place them into their own database. Such practice is not copyright-eligible because ideas are free from copyright.
As for user 84.84.150.164, I emailed him and hopefully he can take some time to read the help section. He's learning and I admit it's a steep learning curve for a 62 year old to learn wiki-language. Have you applied your bot for bot flag? I don't want to see you getting suspended in this project for running a bot to improve articles. OhanaUnitedTalk page 20:01, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
- Re: NHM database use - I see it as at least two separate issues: 1. Copyright/"in a court of law" issues (which you may be right, there is no claim to copyright here(?) - and - 2. Common courtesy/"don't rub people the wrong way". In other words, anyone may be in the legal right to scrape large lists of scientific names from another website without asking but if a site states they would like you to ask or "FYI" them then it's the right thing to do - being positive (Wikispecies can cite them and drive traffic to them) and be proactive instead of them finding out later on their own. I was surprised when I first came here that the list of sources page didn't mention anything about correspondence/contacting the sites (not just common courtesy but to explore possible working relationships or any "insider" info besides what's already on the site). If anything like that did start up, maybe someone who knows or works with the Wikimedia Foundation more directly should get involved? - or maybe we just deal with a comprehensive site like EOL, which already claims over 1 million names? (Just thinking out loud). As for my "VNbot" - yes it has a bot flag, I just haven't had time to use it much. thanks for asking. --Georgeryp 23:06, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
- Ok. Have you tried talking to Monobi? He's working on ITIS. Maybe you can work on EOL and he can work on ITIS. OhanaUnitedTalk page 00:28, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
- Recently checked both ITIS and EOL (e.g. for Diastylis on EOL and on ITIS.) . They are both not up to date. ITIS can take years to catch up sometimes. Better to use taxon specific databases. Lycaon 00:37, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

Re: Pages with NOTOC
editI use AWB's "wiki search" and it generates an up-to-date NOTOC list (but capped to 10,000 results). Once I finish 10,000 saves, I have to let it query the server to generate another list. But 1 thing I'm sure is that it's doing the job right. OhanaUnitedTalk page 00:29, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
Bot
editDo you think you can use Polbot's code to generate articles on Wikispecies? That code is for generating articles on en.wp and I think it is actually easier to make a Wikispecies article than a Wikipedia article. OhanaUnitedTalk page 00:16, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry for the delay in replying. I've been busy in the real world. Anyway, hopefully I can get either VNbot going to create pages soon or adapt Polbot's code (I find Python more readable than Polbot's Perl). This project needs about 1 million new pages to get some respect - especially in context of projects like EOL and ZipcodeZoo with their millions of pages. Some would argue for quality over quantity but without some kind of "wiki-subprojects" or special interest groups" - or even just "featured taxon branches", it's hard for new comers to just find the areas of quality or completeness, never mind for this project to get known for them (wherever they are? - e.g., bryophytes?).</end rant> --Georgeryp 03:24, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for the consideration. Honestly I am a pretty bad bot operator because my AWB bot can't do a lot of functions (or not doing it properly). If I remember correctly, Polbot uses ICUN list. IMO, if Polbot can make all those pages in Wikipedia, it should be a breeze for Wikispecies because we're actually using less data (e.g. no description, doesn't require the conservation status, etc.) Hopefully, it will get snowballed and attract more editors. And hope that some editors know how to program a bot to extract info from not just ITIS or IUCN. OhanaUnitedTalk page 07:23, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

Templates GRIN...
editWell, to start I'm quite new at wikispecies and still trying to figure out how it works. There seems to be many variations of citation of references. I hoped to find some simple standard for major references, like GRIN and then I found you template. However, for this purpose if would be much more usueful if it cited GRIN more "properly". GRIN itself recommend "USDA, ARS, National Genetic Resources Program. Germplasm Resources Information Network - (GRIN) [Online Database]. National Germplasm Resources Laboratory, Beltsville, Maryland." Futher, is there an education page how to make templates like this and like The International Plant Names Index?
