Admin Rights edit

Hello!

I was wondering if you could grant me admin rights. I attempted to run for adminship last month but no one voted at all. I think I should be admin because I have a long time experience on Wikipedia and I would love to help at Wikispecies.

TheJack15 (talk) 22:35, 8 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Dear @TheJack15:, sorry, no I Can't give you admin rights. Such rights are discussed and voted for within the WS community, and admins and crats simply fulfill the wish and will of the community. As for the outcome of that admin voting, Im sure the community thought you were joking, since you Didn't do one single edit in the project so far? I suggest you start to participate in Wikispecies project though, if you are interested in taxonomy, and love to help at Wikispecies. Dan Koehl (talk) 23:57, 8 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Patrol stats edit

Thanks to Cgt on danish Wp, we can now see statistics on patrolling: https://cgt.name/patrolstats/wikispecies.html MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 20:07, 10 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Please note that the patrolling stats URL has now changed from the da:WP user Cgt's personal web page (listed above) to a URL within the Wikimedia project itself, more specifically https://tools.wmflabs.org/patrolstats/specieswiki.html at Wikimedia Tool Labs. The old "cgt.name" URL no longer works without a proper SSL certificate. Best regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 22:46, 17 April 2016 (UTC).Reply

-idae and -idea in Dictionary edit

-idae is used for subclasses in Plantae outside the APG system and was used for subclasses of angiosperms before the APG system (eg, Commelinidae). It is also used for subclasses in Bacteria. And the related suffix -mycetidae is used for subclasses of Fungi.

-idea is used for various ranks of animals, but I have not yet found a subclass that uses it, though I have found a class, an order, a suborder etc., only totaling five (what we have at Wiktionary). I'm sure there are more, probably including a subclass, but it does not seem common. DCDuring (talk) 02:02, 9 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

I'd forgotten I had this list of all subclasses in Plantae from Ruggiero et al.
-phycidae
-idae

- DCDuring (talk) 02:11, 9 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Great, thanks a lot for putting my attention to this @DCDuring:, I reverted my changes, and removed that item in Wikispecies:AutoWikiBrowser/Typos. Once again, thanks. Dan Koehl (talk) 02:22, 9 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
I am working on taxonomic names at Wiktionary, trying to include things like gender, etymology, vernacular names. We also strive to retain and add obsolete terms. Our coverage is modest, but I am happy to respond to any questions you might have about the linguistic aspects of such names. DCDuring (talk) 02:34, 9 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
In entomology you will find SuperFamilies, such as Papilionoidea or Noctuoidea that include Families such as Papilionidae or Notodontidae. Does this help or add confusion? Accassidy (talk) 19:46, 13 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Consensus edit

Hello ! I suggested to install the translation extension on the Village pump but I'm not sure this page is the page to take decision. What do you think ? Archi38 (talk) 17:32, 12 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hello Archi. The VP surely is a great place for this discussion, however questions like this – as well as voting – can sometimes take a little bit longer at Wikispecies in comparison to many other Wikimedia sites. The reason for this is that the Wikispecies' user base is smaller than, say, the English Wikipedia's. But give it time and consensus will be reached. Best regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 11:16, 13 March 2016 (UTC).Reply
Ok, will wait. And thank you ! Archi38 (talk) 11:32, 13 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Adding Spaces edit

Dan,

Can you explain the purpose of adding the space to the line break "<br/>" to make "<br_/>"? Alan. Accassidy (talk) 19:41, 13 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Accassidy: Its an upgrade to en:XHTML, and compatible with en:XML. It seems those breaks are not used on all pages, or by everyone, but the old en:HTML like "<br>", and other variations gets corrected now. Im not really specifically looking for code errors, but submitted the most common in the resent configuration of AutoWikiBrowser, and the amount of corrections is in relation to the amount of not using XHTML code. But myself, I don't see that old code as a large problem. More info: http://www.w3schools.com/html/html_xhtml.asp. Dan Koehl (talk) 20:13, 13 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Adding a blank line edit

Hi Dan, Can you explain why you are recently inserting a blank line on author pages between DEFAULTSORT:xxx, xxxx and

Category:Taxon Authorities using the AWB. Is there any good reason for this? Kempf EK (talk) 14:02, 31 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

I've actually been pondering this myself for some time. Even though {{DEFAULTSORT}} is a "magic word" rather than a category, in reality the only thing it really does is set a default Category Sort Key for the author page. In my opinion, because of this it belongs together with the other categories, rather than in a section of its own. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 23:54, 31 March 2016 (UTC).Reply

Emergency edit

Hello Dan,

I think that your help is needed here. User:Stho002 has come back to assault us, and can't be blocked. He's making new accounts daily. I started a poll on a Usercheck request, but I think you know the procedures better than I. We desperately need an IP-range block. Thank you. Mariusm (talk) 04:38, 5 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Mariusm: Some of us tried before to develop our own local Usercheck policies about a year ago, I guess that when Stho002 was banned, most of the WS community didn't really see any acute need anymore, and maybe we don't need it, even if it would have been handy now. Anyhow Mariusm, Ill take the needed contacts regarding this issue, and ask for an IP-range block, unless someone else already did. Dan Koehl (talk) 08:44, 5 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
I guess its good to wait for the outcome of the poll, which ends on 8th May Dan Koehl (talk) 09:44, 6 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Mariusm:, CU is now requested at Meta. Dan Koehl (talk) 19:42, 9 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Not sure, but... edit

Hi Dan. User:Ambrosia10 - not sure if this another sock. The user has been around since April, but the opening rubric has been seen before and he/she is editing only Stho002 pages mainly with harmless image additions. My interest came originally through a couple of unpatrolled pages. Regards Andyboorman (talk) 11:42, 19 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

The user's global account information can be found here. The user name is attached to 44 Wikimedia accounts. No current blocks, and carrying autopatrol rights on Commons, plus autoreviewer and extendedconfirmed on enWP. Seems okay to me, at least at first glance. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 08:20, 22 August 2016 (UTC).Reply
You are correct me thinks, it seems that there is a common origin in new Zealand and not much else! Andyboorman (talk) 18:37, 22 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

AWB & XTools edit

Hej Dan!

–Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 18:41, 22 October 2016 (UTC).Reply

DanKoehlBot edit

The "bot" DanKoehlBot seems inactive, and does not have a bot flag. Furthermore, since its creation in late March 2015 the bot hasn't made a single edit – with the exception of creating its own user page – nor does the user page state the purpose of the bot. I propose we delete it. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 09:38, 18 October 2016 (UTC).Reply

Of course and as you know, if you intend to use the bot in the future you are always welcome to request that it gets approved by he community. Best regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 09:41, 18 October 2016 (UTC).Reply
@Tommy Kronkvist:, I believe this bot account could serve for spell-checking issues, I'm almost ready with the configuration of the spell-checking, and will request that it gets approved. I think the members of WS will be happier that the spellchecking is performed with a bot, rather than on my personal account, as long as the configuration is approved by the community. So please don't delete it, as for now. Dan Koehl (talk) 17:12, 21 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
Agreed. All the best, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 17:31, 21 October 2016 (UTC)~.Reply

Avslutad omröstning edit

Hej Dan. VN edit

Question: What is the origin of the vernacular names that you added to bird species? I wonder about the ultimate origin as wikidata is importing them from wikispecies. Some are from the IUCN but others not. JMK (talk) 22:43, 7 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

@JMK: As for Swedish vernacular names a list of can be found here. Near the bottom of the page you will find links to HTML-, Excel- and PDF files listing the scientific as well as English and Swedish vernacular names of 10,815 species of birds. The list is continually updated and divided into three parts: "Del 1", "Del 2" and "Del 3" listing non-passerine, passerine, and extinct species, respectively. Vieillot templates edit

Merry Christmas Dan. I would like your opinion about creating templates for the giant 36 volumes of Nouveau Dictionnaire....I have 3 options, first is one template with multiple 36 BHL links to each volume; second is obviously 36 templates, which would make it simplest and direct for each taxon reference; and third, since the volumes were publicated from 1816 to 1819, would be 5 templates each with multiple BHL links. I hope I was clear...Thanks.--Hector Bottai (talk) 13:56, 25 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Personally I would vote for the 36 templates option. While the most work, it is certainly the most convenient solution in the long run. (By the way Dan, a template for Tome 14 is already created – thanks for that, Hector!) Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 20:26, 27 December 2016 (UTC).Reply
