Name
edit- Type species: Peltoschema filicornis Reitter, 1880, by monotypy.
- Gender: feminine [?] or neuter [?]
- (Note: The suffix can be a noun in nominative singular, as -schēma in latinized greek from neuter σχῆμα. Classical latin use indicates it can be treated as either first declension (in feminine) or third declension (in neuter). However, for the nomenclatural viewpoint, ICZN 30.1.2. states that "a genus-group name that is or ends in a Greek word transliterated into Latin without other changes takes the gender given for that word in standard Greek dictionaries". A potential complication arises from the original use of the adjectival suffix of the type species as filiformis (i.e. in nominative singular as third-declension two-termination suffix, i.e. Masc./Fem.). From this it could be prudent to adopt the feminine interpretation, e.g. per recombinations of Reid & Ślipiński (2001), however in contrast the interpretation as neuter may be a better fit to ICZN guidelines. Another similarly named leptidopteran insect Gnorimoschema in contrast appears to be largely treated as neuter in historical publications [although noting that more recently, lepidopterists tend to use original spelling rather than follow gender agreement]).
