Type locality: Brazil, Mato Grosso, Sapezal, Rio Buriti, tributary of Rio Papagaio at Ilha do Papagaio, Rio Juruena drainage, Rio Tapajóos basin, 12°48'02.8"S, 58°23'54.5"W.

Etymology: The specific name honors the friend of the authors and renowned ichthyologist Mônica Toledo-Piza Ragazzo, in recognition for her contributions to the systematics of characiform fishes.
