Holotype: SMNS 58022 (a skull)

Type locality: Brazil, Santana do Cariri, Romualdo Formation.

Etymology: from Professor Challenger, the ficticious hero and dinosaur discoverer of Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle's Lost World. [Martill et al., 1996: page 5]
