Type locality: Brazil, Goiás, Nova Roma, Rio Tocantins basin, affluent of Rio Paranã, 13°48'48.5"S, 46°52'13"W.

Etymology: The species name pristis is from the Greek prister, meaning saw, in reference to the projected ventral procurrent caudal-fin rays along the ventral margin of the caudal peduncle.
