Type species: Ctenocheirodon pristis Malabarba & Jerep, 2012

Etymology: The genus name cteno is from the Greek ktenos meaning comb, used here in reference to the ventral procurrent caudal-fin arrangement of males, and cheirodon, in reference to the characid genus Cheirodon.
