Holotype: USNM 48622.
Type locality: Canada, British Columbia, Off Queen Charlotte Islands, Albatross station 3342, 52°39'30"N, 132°38'00"W, depth 1588 fathoms.
Etymology: The specific epithet of Careproctus ovigerus likely refers to the eggs found in the mouth of the holotype (Jordan & Evermann, 1898).
