Discussion

edit

I already used the process while bringing Phaeophyceae to species level, which is now completed. For some species rich genera I created more than 1100 stubs and categorized them at Category:Phaeophyceae stubs from AlgaeBase. (A number of them I already have emended to full species pages, those are no longer in this category). I'm familiar with the AWB process, and work at lower rates, because I usually do some individual changes to each page before saving. Although in my opinion this assisted editing feels not to be bot-like, I would like to switch to a bot, just to not break the current bot policy, where AWB seems to be a somewhat undefined matter. --Thiotrix (talk) 09:24, 18 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Thiotrix: When you create such stubs, do you match them to exiting Wikidata items and/ or create new Wikidata items, as needed? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:14, 18 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
With the help of AWB, new pages are created. First you have to manually prepare a table with all the data you want to include (like name of page, genus, species, author, year, reference), and AWB assists in filling that to the needed wikispecies format. If a page name of this table already exists, this is skipped by the program and left like it is. In case of Phaeophyceae (more than 2000 species), only a handful of species articles was just existing before, and most genus articles had neither subtaxon lists nor good references. These higher taxon pages I completed manually before running AWB. So all new pages are linked to their genus page. The match to wikidata is done automatically the next day by a bot running on wikidata. --Thiotrix (talk) 10:34, 18 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
These stubs are as good as many of the older species taxon pages please add a vote. Andyboorman (talk) 10:49, 18 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Thiotrix: Thank you. Which bot is that? Do you have an example of an item it created, and an existing item it matched, as part of this process, please? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:17, 18 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Example for new item (like most of the species in Category:Phaeophyceae stubs from AlgaeBase): Alaria angusta, created at wikispecies 10. April, made at wikidata by User:Reinheitsgebot (a bot from Magnus Manske) and emended by Succubot 11. April. Example of matching to an existing wikidata item: Coilodesme californica, created at wikispecies 25. April, matched by Succubot 2. Mai. --Thiotrix (talk) 20:50, 18 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for these - very helpful. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:56, 19 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Also, our bot policy says "Bots' editing speed should be regulated in some way; subject to approval, bots doing non-urgent tasks may edit approximately once every ten seconds, while bots doing more urgent tasks may edit approximately once every four seconds." Please ensure that you keep to this; or provide a justification for exceeding it. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:56, 19 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
