Welcome to Wikispecies!

Hello, and welcome to Wikispecies! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages you might like to see:

If you have named a taxon, then it is likely that there is (or will be) a Wikispecies page about you, and other pages about your published papers. Please see our advice and guidance for taxon authors.

If you have useful images to contribute to Wikispecies, please upload them at Wikimedia Commons. This is also true for video or audio files containing bird songs, whale vocalization, etc.

Please sign your comments on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your username (if you're logged in) and the date. Please also read the Wikispecies policy What Wikispecies is not. If you need help, ask me on my talk page, or in the Village Pump. Again, welcome! -- Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:13, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

If you add unwanted etymology on taxon pages they may be rolled back or deleted. This sort of detail in appropriate for WP. Regards Andyboorman (talk) 14:48, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Could you please provide me with the page that details what is and is not appropriate for Wikispecies? VPaleontologist (talk) 14:59, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
The Help Section is full of useful advice including our basic mission. Regards Andyboorman (talk) 15:16, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Please note that Wikispecies is very different from the other Wikimedia sister projects, especially in comparison to Wikipedia. While Wikipedia is a generally kept "all you can eat" encyclopaedia, Wikispecies is only a database for taxa, taxonomy, biological systematics, type repositories, and information about the authors and references needed to verify that data. Nothing much else. That includes etymology, excluding the very rare exceptions when etymologies can actually add some important information in regards to taxonomy. In other words: Wikispecies always take on a much more scientific approach, while Wikipedia is more mainstream. Having said that, I'm aware of the fact that we do have some 5,500 pages that includes an unwelcome section about etymology – but akin to every other Wikimedia project, Wikispecies is a work in progress... For more information about all of the above, please read What Wikispecies is not and our Help pages (and their subsections). Best regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 07:44, 10 December 2023 (UTC).Reply
