Vernacular name of Echinodermata
editHello Rgt2002. In your edit to Echinodermata you claim that the Tagalog vernacular name of Echinodermata is "tinikan". However, when consulting the Tagalog Wikipedia page for Echinodermata no vernacular name is mentioned at all. Instead, searching the Tagalog Wikipedia shows that "tinikan" is a synonym of "dawag". This strikes me as somewhat odd, since Echinodermata are marine animals, and dawag/tinikan are plants (more precisely thistles). So I wonder: is "tinikan" the Tagalog vernacular name for both the animals in Echinodermata and the plants with "tinik" (i.e. thorns)? Best regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 03:15, 30 November 2016 (UTC).
- Hi!
- Thank you for putting up this issue. I got the term from an old book from the 1960's which translated many scientific words into Tagalog, and it shows "tinikan" as the word for an echinoderm. It also sounds a bit weird to me that the word for echinoderm means "spiny" and would also be the name for all the other organisms with spines, or at least that's what I thought after my edit. I didn't really think this through when I edited the page until you raised this issue. I've removed my edit to end further contradictions.
- Once again, salamat! Rgt2002 (talk) 15:43, 30 November 2016 (UTC)
