Andrew,

I suggest that you look at the edit made a short while ago by this URL to Esox niger. I have since deleted his obscenity, but you might want to consider some admin action. Thanks. Alan, Accassidy 19:15, 18 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Add a language to main page

edit

Hello, There's an orphaned page named Першая старонка (I beleive it is Belorussian). Is it possible to add it to the main page's languages? Else can you delete it? I've been handling the orphaned pages and managed to reduce then from 1200 to practically nill. Mariusm 17:04, 23 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi, after one message on the village pump page, I am still nowhere. First, is there an IRC channel for species, and if there is, can you please tell me which one, because I can not find it. Thank you --Lasta 14:44, 26 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Vandalism from Cheesecracker

edit

Hi, I'm leaving this message on the talkpage of several of the Wikispecies admins. User:Cheesecracker has spent an hour and a half running riot through Wikispecies. I couldn't find an admin urgently so requested help from the Stewards. A two hour block has been placed while cleanup occurs. Can an indefinite block please be used? Not Amsterdam, but Russia (use http://www.geobytes.com/IpLocator.htm?GetLocation), where the author comes from. Perhaps you could protect the page from unregistered users? This is the second attempt to remove the pdf (and this time not by removing it as such, but by changing it slightly so it doesn't work!)...

Template problems

edit

Hi, I'm having problems with Thyrsopteris and Thyrsopteris elegans. The names are not showing in bold on their pages. I suspect I've done something wrong in the template Thyrsopteris, but for the life of me I can't see it. I've compared them with the already existing templates and articles for Dicksonia and Dicksonia antarctica but am still no further forward. Can you please have a look, when you've a moment, and tell me what I've done? Thanks, Beeswaxcandle 05:48, 6 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Lycaon strikes again

edit
  • yet again Lycaon reverts edits for two important pages that I improved (Animalia and Platyhelminthes) with the effect of removing the phyla overview on the Animalia page, despite Mariusm's support for such overviews, and his plea for Lycaon not to waste time targeting my edits. I have no wish to start a wheel war, but I have undone Lycaon's meddling yet again. It would be nice to see Lycaon actually add a significant number of new taxon pages...

Interwikis

edit

Thanks for added those interwiki links. I was going to go back and do that but then I thought maybe there was a bot around that could do that. I'm guessing there's not, huh? Another question: Should I be making taxonav templates for genera or just everything above? Arugula999 00:33, 6 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Ok, thanks for your reply. You seem to be one of the few active users right now, so I hope you don't mind another question. Basically, I'm confused over author abbreviations. I looked at Catalog:Taxon Authorities and related stuff on en.wp, but it's still unclear where these abbreviations come from. Who makes them "official"? I wanted to created some of the most wanted pages, but ran into the problem of not having any one authoritative source. I got as far as creating one.. Is what I did ok? Maybe you can help clear this up for me. Arugula999 04:58, 6 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

MelancholieBot

edit

Hello OhanaUnited,
MelancholieBot is running again :-) --- Best regards, Melancholie 01:35, 10 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Do you know of any tool/bot to add links to Wikispecies on Wikipedias, by the way? Currently, the interwiki linking is only one-way (only species->wikipedia), as you know. Is it allowed to add links to Wikispecies at en.Wikipedia by bot? --- Best regards, Melancholie 04:24, 10 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
I have done inter-project linking by bot already for Wiktionary (in de.wp) some years ago, but this resulted in quite some trouble. Some people just do not like to see that kind of links, and once a problem occurs those people will just go to the barricades. Remember problems like User_talk:Melancholie#Agna that cannot be resolved automatically/autonomously. Placing links into wrong Wikipedia articles or just placing links to Wikispecies articles that are - by some - considered to not be continuative ("of more use") could be a big problem, unfortunately. --- Best regards, Melancholie 15:31, 17 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Diagnostics

edit

Apologies for including the diagnostic characters on the Phoebolampta caeruleotergum page; I thought the information might be useful to researchers using the page, but can understand your reasons for not wanting to include original research.

Incidentally, yes I am the real Sam W. Heads :) and you can contact me directly at sam.heads@port.ac.uk.

Thanks and best wishes ~ Sam W. Heads 20:04, 11 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

So I could include notes on the diagnostic characters of a taxon in a taxon talk page? Having thought about this, it might be better just to avoid diagnostic data altogether as it may lead to endless debates with some taxa... not really what Wikispecies is all about I suppose? Hi. I was just trying to update family Fringillidae to subfamily Fringillinae, and family Estrildidae to subfamily Estrildinae inside Passeridae. But I'm quite new here and I sort of messed it up a bit. So sorry about that.
I'm already fixing it. Please contact me if you undo my edits, or I will go dizzy!

Synonyms

edit

Is there any reason why you removed the hyperlink on the synonym on that Larus saundersi page? I know it just redirects to the same page, but it is a handy way of seeing quickly that the redirects have in fact been done (i.e., it is blue rather than red), or if blue it is quick to click on it and make sure it is a redirect... About templates

edit

Hello and thanks for your help. I read the page on templates but there are still some questions left: Are the templates created automatically by typing {{...}} in the normal wikispecies text, or do they have to be created separately? And how do I "go" to a template for changing it? Perhaps this information could be added on the templates help page.

I have to insert a botanical section between genus and species level . I think this will need a lot of copying, so is it possible to edit 2 pages at the same time?

When all format editing of a genus work is ready, can the older versions be deleted? --Thiotrix 06:18, 3 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

While not a revert back to the initial format I would like it noted that Stho002 has again changed the format of Ephemeroptera after you specifically asked both of us stop making changes until after the vote. I will not revert it as Stho002 has already threatened to ban me once regarding this situation. I would also like to not I several times specifically asked in my edit summaries and in the VP discussion that he not make any more changes to the format which he has ignored. Is there a WS policy for RFCs? --Kevmin 22:54, 23 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
Kevmin clearly has not read my latest comments on the VillagePump, where I state that the "compromise solution" is, on my understanding, already in line with agreed guidelines, and I will edit accordingly unless there is a consensus decision to say otherwise. I have changed Ephemeroptera in line with this "compromise solution" only. Stho002 23:00, 23 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
Also, it is entirely inaccurate to say that I threatened to ban Kevmin! I did no such thing! What I said was that if he continued to revert my edits, I would have to invoke my sysop powers, but this might well mean protecting pages rather than blocking anybody! Thank you for your note regarding the correct order for the reference section and vernacular names section. To date, all but one or two of the pages I have modified had the vernacular names section already entered, but empty, or with the names entered in such a way that they were not appearing on the page. I entered some names, copying the format from other pages that had vernacular names published, but did not change the placement of any of the sections on the page. I am very, very new at this, so any other hints and tips will be appreciated. For example, should I move the vernacular names section when I find it before the reference section? And why is it there so often, anyway? Many of the vernacular names that are not appearing on the page have the square brackets, which I think is supposed to be a link, yet the result is invisible on the page. Am I doing more harm than good by changing them to the |en= type format?

Oh, and as an aside, I belong to the "Hey, what's this do?" school of learning, so I was alarmed when I clicked on the "User:OhanaUnited/Usurp notice" link, I hope I didn't cause any problems. It was a link with a vague and mysterious name, so I investigated, I don't want to usurp your name. Infoglutton 21:37, 22 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

So far, I have yet to find a species page that has the reference page before the vernacular names. I had begun changing them, as you informed me the references should come before the vernacular names, but as references have uniformly been last on every page I've looked at, I am wondering if it's worth it. Well, Ohana, for a start you could take a walk outside, preferably where there are trees and things, and see what you can find! Other than that, I survive (just!) doing insect identification work for various clients, so there are probably a couple of hundred thousand (maybe even million) specimens of various (mostly small) species sitting in samples in this room with me right now. Hi Ohana, not sure if you have seen my post in Village Pump Wikispecies:Village_Pump#Admin_rights_user:stho002, about the same subject as you posted on Stho's talk page. However, considering Stho's history and persistence, giving another chance may not be the best solution. --Kempm 08:18, 20 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
