We like having new people contributing to Wikispecies. Here are a few things that may be interesting:
Please ask further questions in the Village Pump. If you have useful images to contribute to Wikispecies, please upload them at the Wikimedia Commons. We hope you'll enjoy the time you spend on Wikispecies! You can sign your messages with ~~~~. |
Welcome
editThe help pages are definitely a start. I don't think you need to read the first page because you're an admin at en.wp. That page is for scientists who never touched Wikipedia and want to learn how to contribute while using wiki-markup. We have a slightly stricter format guidelines. For you, it should be relatively easy to pick up since you already knew how to place images, sections, use templates, and add interwiki links.
There is nothing in particular that you can't do here (other than using administrative buttons). We are always creating new articles for species. Do note that sometimes we have pages that Wikipedia don't, such as subfamily and subtribus. Certain biology/taxonomy knowledge will benefit here, but not hard to learn otherwise. Since this is multilingual project, we use latin in mainspace pages, but we welcome users to communicate in any languages (though preferably in English). We also look out for any vandalisms, creation of fake species (though it only happened once, when a steward candidate gone pointy to illustrate how bad our wiki was without large amount of traffic... he lost quite a bit of votes there by his pointy-ness). I should point out that in Wikispecies, we welcome IPs to contribute. They have the abilities to create pages here without registration. Our focus here is to assist them learn the wiki-markup or help fix the page to ensure proper formatting.
If you have more questions, just leave me a note. OhanaUnitedTalk page 19:35, 3 May 2009 (UTC)
No offence, but the image you added of Rhantus frontalis is just AWFUL! I wonder if no image would in fact be better than that? Stho002 06:03, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah, I agree, but it was really the only image I could find. Other than that, is the page acceptable? –Juliancolton | Talk 14:29, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
- I made some changes.[1] For starters, don't use basepagename. For image size, if it's portrait, we use 220px and if it's landscape, we use 250px. Instead of using "male" or "female", we use their appropriate symbols. They are located in the toolbox under the edit section. OhanaUnitedTalk page 18:08, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
- I'll keep those pointers in mind. Thanks, as always! –Juliancolton | Talk 03:46, 22 December 2009 (UTC)

JCbot
editHey, Juliancolton. Would you mind maybe getting a bot flag for JCbot if you're planning on doing more bot runs like that? Normally, I wouldn't suggest it for such an account but on a project like this, we're used to a quieter Special:RecentChanges. :) If you're not planning on running it that often, then don't worry about it. Thanks. Rocket000 02:55, 23 December 2009 (UTC)
- Heh, OhanaUnited approved it for a trial 100 edits; once it gets the bot flag I'm going to let it run its full course. :) –Juliancolton | Talk 14:36, 23 December 2009 (UTC)
Request for vote reg use of BASEPAGENAME
editThe previous discussions regarding if we should subst:ing BASEPAGENAME and change all [[BASEPAGENAME
]] into [[susbt:BASEPAGENAME
]] did not really reach a consensus.
Please vote here on the Village pump!
If you are not sure on your opinion, you can read and join the discussion about the claimed advantages and disadvantages of using BASEPAGENAME

Wikispecies Oversighter
editWikispecies has no local Oversighter. Since I had the communitys confidence regarding the previous application for Checkusers rights, as per local Oversight policy on META, I hereby apply to get Oversighters user rights, as a request to the Wikispecies community.
Application is located at Requests for Comment.
Please also note that Oversighter actions are logged, but for privacy reasons the logs are only visible to other Oversighters. Because of this, Wikispecies must always have no fewer than two oversighters, for mutual accountability. I don't want to suggest anyone, but hope that someone feel inspired and will step forward and also apply for oversighters rights.

Oversight nomination
editPlease refer to Wikispecies:Oversighters/Requests/Koavf for a second Oversight nomination. Note that we must have at least two Oversigthers in order for anyone to have these user rights. All feedback is welcome. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 19:50, 3 March 2017 (UTC)
