Welcome to Wikispecies!

Hello, and welcome to Wikispecies! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages you might like to see:

If you have named a taxon, then it is likely that there is (or will be) a Wikispecies page about you, and other pages about your published papers. Please see our advice and guidance for taxon authors.

If you have useful images to contribute to Wikispecies, please upload them at Wikimedia Commons. This is also true for video or audio files containing bird songs, whale vocalization, etc.

Please sign your comments on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your username (if you're logged in) and the date. Please also read the Wikispecies policy What Wikispecies is not. If you need help, ask me on my talk page, or in the Village Pump. Again, welcome!

For User:Oscar Roth Andersen, I rolled back the IP's edits[1] but keep the rest. It's just a user trying to make a joke using taxonavigation table. Next, we got Rhantus elisabethae. I formatted it but having problem with the image to be placed inside the picture box. Not sure if it's just my computer or if it's happening on all computers. Do let me know how it looks on your side. And finally, I salvaged the Kakadudessus tomweiri because it's quite easy to fix it back to good shape. Try avoid tagging and/or deleting pages not using standard formatting if it can be fixed in few minutes. JS edit

It works most of the time. The regex could use a tweaking, but its enough for what I use it for. You should try the other little script I have for doing replacements. It's the first section of code on User:Rocket000/monobook.js. What it does is create a tab that when you click it you get a popup asking what to search for and then what to replace it with. It can be quite powerful. You don't even need to know regex that well to start using it (ask me if you want a quick overview of the syntax, there's really only a couple things you need to do most of what you'd want). You'll find most characters are treated as literals anyway. Rocket000 20:23, 7 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Alcoasia amazonica edit

Well, I'm not sure what you want me to do. Alocasia ×amazonica André might to be an invalid name, maybe better refered to as Alocasia 'Amazonica'. However, the fact that it is not listed in IPNI or Tropicos is not a guarantee that is hasn't been described to science. There are MANY names not listed there which still is indeed correctly published. In my opinion the name could deserve a place in Wikispecies even if it's not valid as it is in general use.... with a clear notation that this is an illegitme name. I have included Clematis ×fargesioides, a name in use, but probably without a formal publication.

I've contacted IPNI and GRIN for a comment on Alocasia amazonica. Epibase 01:00, 14 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
After a discussion with IPNI I've moved the name to nothospecific status and confirmed it is invalid. But, it will probably be validated rather soon...Epibase 22:08, 16 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Cowania edit

Cowania is a genus in the tribus Cheritrini after Tolweb etc. I have no further documentation about that some tribes are now subtribes. So for the time being i let stay it. I shall surch in documentation for more details. Next week i shall rename Cowania (Cheritrini). Thanks for your attention.

There are more Cowania genera. Therefore i have made Cowania (Cheritrini). So Cowania can delete. I have transferred the species to Cowania (Cheritrini). I had make a mistake to change under Cowania the genus in Cowania (Cheritrini). If you delete Cowania than everything is ok.

Replacement names always take the type species of the names that they replace, so you only need to state the type species of Adamas (by monotypy). Calafia edit

Hi, Ark,
Could you explain your actions around Calafia. Have you seen Maresiella, where I have explicitely noticed the publication, where Calafia was synonymised? If that was a mistake, please restore the right state. Kuzia (talk) 11:38, 6 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I know, that Calafia as a distinct taxon of Stenetriidae persists througout web databases. The primary source is isolist. I like this database, just because such great isopodologists worked (and work) on it, as Marilyn Schotte, Brian Kensley and (rarely) George Wilson. But I see there many mistakes. During my work in WS I base myself upon published articles. And that reference to Wilson's opinion is the only recent notice about the status of Calafia in the "paper" literature. Another indication is the ignorance of Calafia by Wilson in his review of the Stenetriidae (Serov, Wilson, 1995). So, we have a published opinion of Dr Wilson (the leader specialist on asellotes) of 2001 and an unpublished page in the web database, made (probably "by default") by Dr Schotte in 2007. Thus, let's follow Wilson's proposal. Could you restore the situation? Kuzia (talk) 15:32, 6 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the job! I try to make species pages more expanded: Maresiella brevicornis (no type material mentioned yet, because I don't have that Carvacho paper right now). Kuzia (talk) 16:02, 6 January 2011 (UTC). P.S. Your English is fine! Could we use Russian if you wish?Reply

Cześć. Posprzątałem plemię Marmotini. Oczywiście na podstawie Helgen, Kristofer M.; Cole, F. Russel; Helgen, Lauren E.; and Wilson, Don E 2009. Generic Revision in the Holarctic Ground Squirrel Genus Spermophilus. Journal of Mammalogy, 90(2): 270–305. doi:10.1644/07-MAMM-A-309.1. http://www.mammalsociety.org/uploads/Helgen%20et%20al%202009.pdf. .

Pozdrawiam. --Leszek Bledzki (talk) 22:05, 14 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Microcerberidae edit

Hi Ark,

could you, please, re-create this page: Incertae_sedis_(Microcerberidae), which was deleted by User:Stho002. There was no discussion as always, so I have no idea, what was the need to leave these pages orphaned: Microcerberus monodi, Microcerberus remyi. These species are listed as incertae sedis in the latest revision of the family I cited. Please, also make a look at other edits, because I see no point. (And these edits changing the classification). I guess, I have no chance to be involved in the process, so I have to ask for your mediation.

A more general question (I haven't ever found an answer): is Template:zfg accepted? Who said, that all family-group names should be in small caps (besides User:Stho002)? (It is not wide-spread in the scientific literature). Was there a discussion here? If yes, why don't we make a bot run to insert it everywhere?

Another point: WS has become a project of one very strange admin. It was completely different when I joined it.

Vote request edit

Hello, I’m Marius, an admin here at WS. I would like to ask you to contribute to an important ongoing vote which will practically decide the future of WS. As you probably know, the user Stho002, an admin, is forcefully endorsing his concept of the content and format of WS. His “system” includes a complex mesh of templates and links which is nowhere specified or written down, is not considered as a consensus, and is not easy or trivial to use, especially by newcomers. As my experience goes, when I save an edited page, Stho002 will delete or change it sooner or later, sometimes in a matter of seconds. This is no way of maintaining a healthy community. It is a lamentable fact that the aggressiveness by which Stho enforces his way deters many users and causes many newcomers leave this site.

The original WS help pages ([3], [4], [5]) contain a much simpler system, where the resulting taxa information is no less clear nor less detailed then Stho’s format, and which is being used successfully for years by experienced users as well as by novices.

If we decide that our current page format is outdated in need of improvement, we surely must make the change through collaboration and discussion. It is unacceptable that a single user will dictate his concept, however better-suited for our purposes he thinks it is.

We therefore have three options: (a) to make Stho002 system the official WS format; (b) to endorse the system specified in the help pages; (c) to devise a new system by mutual cooperation. After we reach an agreement, we’ll modify the help pages accordingly, resulting in a consistent way of doing things, without having to fight among ourselves, without having to resort to deleting and modifying each other’s work.

Therefore please read the discussion here and take a moment of your time and make your choice here. I think it is your obligation as an admin to participate in the vote. Thanks, Mariusm (talk) 08:54, 13 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
