Type locality: rio Tejo, a tributary of rio Algodonal, upper rio Catatumbo basin, township of Ocaña, 8°14'15"N, 73°2'26"W [1], 1,202 asl, Department Norte de Santander, Colombia.
Etymology: The specific name ocanaensis refers to the type locality of the species, which was found around the town of Ocaña.
