Holotype: UFRJ 6002. Paratypes: MCP 35030 (2); UFRJ 4070 (5), 5655-57 (10, 5 c&s, 10).
Type locality: Brazil, Minas Gerais State, Município de Alto Caparaó, Rio Caparaó, Rio Itabapoana basin, Alto Caparaó, 20°25'53.9"S, 41°51'56.8"W.
Etymology: From the Latin cauda (= tail) and fasciatus (= with bars), referring to the caudal-fin color pattern of the species.
