Type locality: Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul State, municipality of São Francisco de Paula, rio Santa Cruz, rio Caí basin, 29º21’46”S, 50º31’18”W.

Etymology: The specific name is from the Greek balios (= spotted), in reference to the color pattern of the species formed by circular black blotches.
