- Etymology: The species epithet was selected in honour of the indigenous Pytako tribe inhabiting the banks of the Xingu River basin, who know the fish as kranponhah. This word is an adjective from the Xikrin language that can be broken down into kran (= head, mountain or deeply rounded head) and ponhah (= hair or hairy), also translated as ‘long haired’. This is in reference to the long filaments formed by the extensions of the dorsal-fin rays in mature males.
