Type locality: Amapá, Laranjal do Jari, rio Jari, upstream Cachoeira de Santo Antônio, at the top of the waterfall upstream the rapids, approximately at the central point of the waterfall, 0°38'46"S, 52°30'32"W [1].
Etymology: The species is named after the indigenous people of the Tupi-guarani cultural-linguistic group, Wajãpi, also known as Waiapi or Oyampi. At the time of description of the species, the Wajãpi group has a population of less than 2000 people distributed in several tribes in the state of Amapá, Brazil, and in French Guiana (Gallois and Grupioni 2003).
