Type locality: Okavango River [1], Namibia.
Etymology: The specific epithet vanderwaali is a patronym that honors Ben Van der Waal, in recognition of his donations of fish collections from Northern Namibian rivers to the J. L. B. Smith Institute of Ichthyology and the Albany Museum.
