- Lectotype designated in Poll (1971).
- Paralectotype: BMNH 1862.6.17.65 (1).
Type locality: Upper Nile River at Khartoum [1], Sudan.
Etymology: The species epithet sorex is the Latin word for shrew-mouse; probably the general shape of catfish reminded the author of this animal.
