- Paralectotypes: BMNH 1920.5.26.103 (1); MRAC 14175-177 (1, 1, 1).
Type locality: Lukonzolwa, Lake Moero [Lake Mweru], Democratic Republic of Congo.
Etymology: The specific epithet polystigma is a combination of the Greek words poly (= many), and stigma (= spot), a reference to the many dark spots of the species.
