Holotype: MNHN 1886-0433. Paratypes: MNHN 1886-0434 (1).

Type locality: Ogôoué River at Adouma, Gabon.

Etymology: Species name polyodon is a combination of the Greek words poly (= many), and odon (= tooth), in reference to the many teeth, which the author noticed.
