- Holotype (unique): BMNH 1897.9.30.13.
Type locality: Stanley [Boyoma] Falls, upper Congo River, Democratic Republic of Congo.
Etymology: The specific epithet pleurops is a combination of the Greek words pleuro (= side), and ops (= eye), a reference to the extremely sidewards placed eyes of the species.
