Synodontis petricola Matthes, 1959: 78.

Holotype: MRAC 130357. Paratypes: BMNH 1936.6.15.1232 (1); MRAC 130358-60 (3), MRAC 130361-67 (7), MRAC 130368-76 (9), MRAC 130377 (1), MRAC 130824 (1)].

Type locality: Democratic Republik of Congo. Kashekezi, northern Lake Tanganyika.

Etymology: Species name petricola is a composite from the Latin petra, for stone or rock, and cola for inhabitant, referring to its rockdwelling life.
