Holotype: BMNH 1905.11.10.10.

Type locality: Zambia, Lake Bangwelo [Bangweolo].[1]

Etymology: The species epithet is a compound of the Latin nigro (= black), and maculatus (= spotted), an allution to the dark spots of the species.
