Holotype: BMNH 1899.9.6.7.
Type locality: Democratic Republic of Congo, Kinshasa, Stanley Pool, upper Congo River near Brazzaville.
Etymology: The specific name greshoffi is dedicated to Mr. A. Greshoff, who shipped in the course of the years 1886 - 1890 a considerable number of fishes from Boma to the Zoological Musuem of the University of Utrecht, amongst them was also this species.
