Holotype: MZB 20019. Paratypes: MZB 20020 (1); WAM P.33357-001 (1), P33368-002 (1).
Type locality: Indonesia, West Papua Province, Cenderawasih Bay, north of Tridacna Atoll, Oceanic patch reef, 2°25.830'S, 134°54.409'E, depth 70 meters.
Etymology: The species is named tudorjonesi after Paul Tudor Jones, in honour of his dedication and selfless service to the United States National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF). Under his strong leadership as chairman from 2006 to 2009, the NFWF has grown into a highly respected conservation institution and expanded its programs from a national focus to a global one, including protection of the Bird’s Head Seascape reefs which, this beautiful dragonet species calls home. Through these efforts, Mr. Tudor Jones has forever left his mark on the noble pursuit of nature preservation.
