Type locality: Brazil: Minas Gerais State: Salinas: rio Bananal, tributary of the rio Salinas in a dam nearby Salinas, rio Jequitinhonha basin; 16°08'36.2" S, 42°16'59.7" W; 478 m above sea level.
Etymology: The specific name zanatae is in honor to the Brazilian ichthyologist Angela Maria Zanata, in recognition of her great contribution to our knowledge of Neotropical freshwater fishes, and for collecting the species.
