Type locality: Mediterranean Sea, Israel, Ashdod.
Etymology: The specific name lessepsianus is in reference to the distribution of this species in both the Red Sea and eastern Mediterranean Sea, it having migrated from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean via the Suez Canal, a phenomenon known as “Lessepsian migration” (after the French diplomat Ferdinand de Lesseps, who supervised the construction of the Suez Canal).
