Type locality: Red Sea, Gulf of Aqaba, west coast, Taba, 3 km S of Interuniversity Institute of Marine Sciences, 29°30’N, 34°53’E [1].

Etymology: The specific epithet trispilus is from the Latin tri- (= three), and Greek spilos (= dots), for the three black spots anteriorly on the dorsal fin, one on each of the first three membranes.
