Type locality: Venezuela, Amazonas, Río Ventuari, pool behind beach on south side of river, about 12 kilometers above mouth of Río Ornico, Laguna Pavon (4°04'N, 66°56'W).[1]
Etymology: The specific name honors Richard Winterbottom, American ichthyologist from the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto, Canada.
