Type locality: Brazil, Amazonas, Manaus, Igarapé Sirinau, tributary of Rio Cuieiras (tributary of Rio Negro), ca. 2°42’S, 60°20’W.[1]
Etymology: The specific name honors Richard P. Vari, ichthyologist from the National Museum of Natural History, Washington D.C., in recognition of his vast, invaluable contribution to the knowledge of systematics of characiform fishes, particularly the anostomoid fishes.
