Holotype (unique): ZIN 54972.
Type locality: Atlantic Ocean, off Morocco, 29°29′N, 10°51′W [1], depth 849 m.
Etymology: The species is named in honor of a well-known ichthyologist from Portugal, Günther E. Maul. He conducted a comprehensive analysis of deepwater ichthyofauna of the Atlantic Ocean including the investigation of manefishes (Caristiidae) from Madeira.
