Type locality: Guyana, Burro Burro River (Essequibo Drainage), Deer Falls between Deer Creek and Water Dog Falls, 4°39'53"N, 58°50'28"W.

Etymology: The specific epithet ephippia (meaning saddle) refers to the saddle-like middorsal blotches.
