Original combination: Ophiacantha valenciennesi Lyman, 1879

Type locality: Challenger Station 192. Off the Key-Islands, Indonesia. Depth 129 fms.

Holotype: BMNH 1882.12.23.456.

Etymology: named after Achille Valenciennes.
