- Holotype: YPM ICH 024404, YFTC 12234.
- Paratypes: numerous.
- Type locality: Cane Creek off of Tennessee Highway 285 in riffle just downstream of the mouth of Millstone Branch, approximately 7 km northeast of Spencer.
- Etymology: named after the ichthyologist Wayne C. Starnes, Curator of Fishes and Director of the Research Lab at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, co-author of The Fishes of Tennessee (Etnier and Starnes 1993), and valued colleague of the authors, who has made substantial contributions to our understanding of the natural history and biology of North American freshwater fishes.
